Clinical and Research Activities
As operating surgeon I personally performed approximately 3500 breast operations with about
1300-1400 visits per year.
My efforts regarding clinical research have been focused in sentinel lymph node biopsy, intraoperative radiotherapy, and in the possibility of extending breast conservation in special clinical
scenario such as multifocal-multicentric breast cancer, in patients with local reappearance or after
primary medical treatment. One of my favourite interests is the study of breast cancer diagnosed
in young women or during pregnancy and in field of fertility preservation.
As Principal Investigator of the SOUND trial (Gentilini O, Veronesi U. Abandoning sentinel lymph
node biopsy in early breast cancer? A new trial in progress at the European Institute of Oncology
of Milan (SOUND: Sentinel node vs Observation after axillary UltraSouND). Breast. 2012
Oct;21(5):678-81. doi: 10.1016/j.breast.2012.06.013. Epub 2012 Jul 25) I am currently involved in
establishing partnership with the about 20 italian centers and 15 international institutes which
showed concrete interest in joining our prospective randomized trial.
