DOMUS
Ficción y mundo doméstico en el Barroco español
NOELIA S. CIRNIGLIARO
Domus studies the representation of the urban noble house in
17th-century Spanish short novels and plays.
Domus delves into the 17th-century Spanish plays and short novels that emerged in
conjunction with early modern forms of domesticity in Spanish cities. The book interprets
the act of dwelling in the houses of the urban nobility through the lens of architecture and
home décor, gender relations, the domestic economy, and the use of objects, light and space.
It focuses on historical vectors that transformed both the early modern home and the creative
imagination of Baroque authors. The book suggests that urban comedias, short plays and courtly
novels exemplify how dwellings became a central theme in 17th century dramas and narratives
as the baroque house was culturally conceived as a stage for domesticity.
NOELIA S. CIRNIGLIARO is an assistant professor in the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese at Dartmouth College.
