Certification Course Guidelines & Resources The GME budget approved by our hospital partners includes funding for the following certification courses required by our training programs and/or the ACGME. Reimbursement forms can be found on the GME webpage – http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/GME/ - left-hand menu choose: POLICIES; o Resident & Fellows Policies; Certification Course Reimbursement Forms. PGY1 residents only are entitled to the following reimbursement for initial certification only; recertification is not covered. Residents will be eligible for reimbursement for eligible certification courses taken by residents in the programs listed below within three months prior and six months after the residents start date. The Office of Graduate Medical Education does not track your certification status. This is done at the program level. If you cannot attend a course prior to IRW, let your program administrator know so arrangements can be made after you start your residency. Basic Life Support (BLS) – all new PGY1 residents are eligible for reimbursement up to $50 per resident. All residents are expected to be BLS certified. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – residents in the following programs are eligible for reimbursement up to $150 per resident: Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine (categorical & preliminary), Combined Preventive Medicine/Medicine, Med/Peds, Neurology, Neurosurgery, OB/GYN-CHS, O/M Surgery, Osteopathy, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Surgery (preliminary & categorical), Vascular Surgery Integrated Traditionally, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Internal Medicine/Catholic Health System schedule ACLS certification courses during their first module. Check with your program to determine whether you need to arrive certified. All other residents should make arrangements to arrive at orientation certified. Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – residents in the following programs are eligible for reimbursement up to $700 per resident: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine/SUNY, O/M Surgery, Surgery (categorical & preliminary), Vascular Surgery Integrated There is an ATLS course offered to a limited number of programs on Wednesday, June 18th and Thursday, June 19th. Due to space restrictions, not all eligible programs will be registered for this course. If you are registered for this course, you will receive materials from the course director in May. If you are not part of this course, your program will work with you and the local course coordinator to schedule you throughout the year. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and the Neonatal Resuscitation Life Support Course (NRLS) will be scheduled and paid for as part of Incoming Resident Week (IRW). In May you will receive detailed instructions and materials to help you prepare. The UB sponsored PALS course will be held on Saturday, June 28th and Sunday, June 29th for the Pediatric, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Osteopathic, Med/Peds, O/M Surgery, and Pediatric Dental residents who are not currently certified. The UB sponsored NRLS course will be held on Friday, June 27th for the Med/Peds, OB/GYN SUNY, OB/GYN Sisters, Pediatrics, and Peds/Prelim Child Neurology residents. Certification Resources for BLS/ACLS In addition to the Buffalo-area courses listed here, you are free to acquire your certification using any of the following options: at the location of your choosing (including your current local hospital) as long as the certification is approved by the American Heart Association.
