Tim Helland Money Matters Tom Delano (with Rev. Pat Visger) The Bible is the standard for life. Christians consider it to be His inerrant word, inspired by the Holy Spirit. In fact, it’s more than a book; it is actually a collection of 66 books, written over a span of nearly 2000 years to sundry people and cultures. As such, it often presents interpretive challenges to today’s readers. What can be said of some of the more difficult passages of the Bible? Can they be interpreted and applied in the 21st century? Join us for a look at the Hard Sayings of the Bible and gain an understanding of the most challenging passages in God’s perfect Word. Life is a gift of time from God. It includes a start, an end, and a predetermined set of days in between. The discussions in this class will center around what we are doing with our days. Could we be making more of a difference in the world with our lives? All of us want lives that are marked by success, but are we also using significance as a standard for the best use of the days God has granted us? And considering the multiple aspects of our lives, how do we prioritize significance? Find out as we delve into the importance of evaluating our life achievements by significance as well as success. Did you know there are over 2,350 verses in the Bible that pertain to money? Have you noticed that nearly half of Jesus’ parables relate to possessions? The Bible is packed with wise counsel on finances. In fact, Jesus had more to say about money than about heaven and hell combined. Money Matters conveys the sage financial wisdom of the Bible through video presentation and small-group discussions, encouraging immediate application and results! Additionally, the course workbook affords students the opportunity to revisit topics, thereby promoting long-term adherence to the biblical principles on money management. Our visit with Dolores Braxton on the first Sunday of March was shorter than usual, as she was feeling only fair and her brother, Mr. Dean, had an errand to run. Mrs. Braxton always looks forward to our fellowship and our time of Communion, and praises the Lord every day for His gift of life! And even on days when she does not feel physically fit, she is always spiritually fit… a devoted prayer warrior, ever mindful of God’s amazing grace. She never fails to lift up her family in prayer and responds with wisdom and knowledge to their questions about God. In fact, her grandniece, Amy, was also on hand to receive the Bread and Cup, as her baby boy, Zaire, slept soundly on the couch. Jerry and Debbie Pantano Through our monthly visits with Sophia Carol, we have come to appreciate her terrific sense of humor. She continues to make strides in her recovery from a bonemarrow transplant and told us how much she recently enjoyed the opportunity to grocery-shop for the first time in a year. She meandered through the store for three hours until finally realizing that she needed to get out before she spent all of her money! What an inspiration she is to us! It’s been a long year, but Sophia is grateful for every new day in spite of having been shutin during a very long and cold winter. We prayed that her strength would continue to build and enable her to return to church in the near future. At this, Sophia requested prayer on behalf of people she knows who also need to be in church. Obviously, Sophia is a dedicated Christian who witnesses wherever she can…using whatever is in her hands! Michael & Deborah Quire Dolores Chesbrough looked lovely and was in excellent spirits as we gathered for Communion and fellowship. Although most of her twelve children live out of state, her youngest son, Todd, lives with her and is an attentive caregiver. Since this was our first Communion visit with Dolores, she related a good deal of her personal history at Bethesda; and there’s no mistaking her desire to resume regular attendance, especially on Thursday mornings! She spoke fondly of the service itself and also of her friends who comprise the Thursday faithful. She trusts that the Lord will soon heal her and looks forward to a happy reunion in worship and fellowship. Meanwhile, she appreciates the excellent care Bethesda provides to its homebound members. As we got to know more about each other, Dolores told us that she likes to write…even showing us a sample of her work (a poem) from 1983. In fact, one of her goals is to further that interest, perhaps with the help of her daughter, a New York City resident. Later, as we moved toward prayer time, Dolores asked for the healing of her severe arthritic condition and that the Lord would guide her as she contemplates the sale of her home and future living accommodations. Scott and Heather Wanamaker On Communion Sunday in March, we made our way to the Village of East Harbor. As we walked toward the rehabilitation unit, the receptionist recognized us and said, “Gunvor (Dalen) is back in independent living!” We were thrilled at the news because it had been Gunvor’s desire to regain sufficient strength to move back into her own room. We found her in a different location than the one she’d previously occupied, but it was still very nice, boasting a fresh coat of paint and crown moldings. The walls, however, were still bare, devoid of Gunvor’s beloved possessions that add a warm and beautiful touch to her surroundings. She was eagerly anticipating the return of her daughter-in-law, Kim Dalen (visiting in Norway), whose decorating skills Gunvor admires and appreciates: “Kim has an eye for these things!” As always, we enjoyed our time of Communion and prayer. Although Gunvor is not one to complain-always mindful of God’s gifts of life and salvation--we nonetheless petitioned the Lord to take away her pain and to further strengthen her body. Before concluding our visit, we briefly noted the March issue of the Heartbeat of Bethesda and its cover photo of the Stitch Chix. Gunvor quickly recalled that this fine group of talented ladies was responsible for the handmade Christmas gifts she had received. We then said our good-byes, allowing Gunvor to enjoy some quality rest (doctor’s orders!). Angela and Dale Flowers Elvera Esler (Gail’s aunt) has a marvelous relationship with the staff at her independent-living facility. And as we chatted following Communion and prayer, she mentioned that, earlier that morning, one of the “workers” (someone Don and I do not recall meeting) had asked about her “niece and her husband” and whether they were planning to drop by to serve Communion. On one hand, it’s amazing to think of how many people may be watching when we don’t even realize it, but it’s hardly surprising how Aunt Elvera’s warm and friendly ways naturally cause people to take an interest in her life! She had finished lunch just prior to our arrival and had made plans to attend a small “concert in the park,” held in the complex’s beautiful atrium building. So, before concluding our time together, we presented Elvera with a 15-year-old photo of herself and her sisters. She was very grateful for this family keepsake, but also for her loving family members and, most of all, for God’s love and grace! Don and Gail Toth Isabel Ferianc and her daughter, Rose, gave us a warm welcome upon our arrival for March’s Communion visit. We talked for a while, covering just about everything that had occurred since our previous meeting. One unfortunate incident resulted in hip surgery for Isabel. She fractured it in a fall, but surgeons determined that the damage could be repaired with the aid of three pins, which were installed on January 30. Shortly after the operation, Isabel entered a rehabilitation facility, but Rose soon decided that Isabel’s overall health and recovery would be better served at home. As a result, Isabel continues to work diligently during her physical therapy sessions, but can do so without leaving her comfortable surroundings. After sharing the Lord’s Supper, we prayed together, asking God to oversee Isabel’s complete healing and the restoration of her mobility. Fred and Judith Esquivel Emmy Fitzpatrick is such a lovely lady and truly blessed us as we all became acquainted and shared the Lord’s Supper. She lives in the assisted-living side of Waltonwood (just off the “ring road” that surrounds Lakeside Mall) and shares her apartment with another lady. Emmy rested in bed throughout our visit, but informed us that she gets up each morning and eats all of her meals in the main dining room. After Communion, we asked God to send His healing touch to her knees and legs, which have been a troublesome source of pain. A Changing of the Guard in The Balanced Christian Like so many men of faith before him, Doug Kaherl was initially uncertain as to how to respond to an apparent calling to teach one of Bethesda’s adult Sunday School classes. As a small-group leader in Bethesda’s Catechism department, Doug had been urged by longtime Bethesdan Rev. Dan Adams to take the reins of The Balanced Christian, stressing a “back to basics” approach. Doug even noticed certain signs that seemed to corroborate Rev. Adam’s advice; but it wasn’t until his car came dangerously close to collidAfter 15 years Doug Kaherl has stepped down as in- ing with another vehicle (a truck owned structor of “The Balanced Christian.” His successors by Back To Basics Home Improvement) are Arnold Jones (left) and Winferd Bailey. that he became convinced of God’s di- rection in his life. Roughly 15 years later, on Sunday, March 30, his class members, several other Bethesdans and his successors gave Doug a warm send-off as he moves onward to the next chapter in his life. Though we’ll always be grateful for Doug’s exemplary qualities as an instructor and leader, he leaves The Balanced Christian in good hands. Co-instructors Arnold Jones and Winferd Bailey have already begun a new series titled The Fruit of the Spirit. Jesus said that we can tell the quality of a man by his fruit. But what is the fruit? Inside, we found Steve in good spirits, but he admitted to some discomfort from a new liver-related drainage tube. His attitude is truly amazing and the Lord has certainly granted His peace and comfort to the Serras throughout Steve’s lengthy ordeal. Both Steve and Carol shared stories of the Lord’s faithfulness in meeting their family’s needs. Their amazing account of God’s provision and rich blessings ministered to us all! After sharing the Communion Table, we asked God to keep His hand on Steve, Carol and their daughters, that they would all remain strong throughout this trial. Although we continuously pray for Steve’s healing, we are also mindful and appreciative of his excellent example to the church...not only of God’s faithfulness, but also of the Serras’ unwavering faith in God! Todd and Robin Carley Fred Unruh looks forward to our monthly time of Communion and fellowship (the feeling is mutual!) and he was ready for us when we arrived. He looks good and says he feels good too, with the exception of diminished hearing and vision. But he doesn’t consider them serious setbacks because neither prevents him from pursuing his interests and favorite activities. He enjoys life at Sanctuary at Bellbrook, including the interaction with fellow residents, particularly at mealtime, when his group of friends convenes at their favorite table. The three of us spent time in the Word and appreciated the opportunity to commune with the Lord. Afterward, we talked about the days when Fred first made his way to Michigan…from Kansas by way of Missouri. Bill & Phyllis Staugaard During our Communion visit in early March, Peter Vandekerkhof declared that he is not afraid and knows in his heart that he is healed. Naturally, he is worn out from the ordeal of chemotherapy, but Peter was in high spirits, and both he and Teeny (wife, Martina) looked wonderful! After partaking of the Bread and Cup, all of us prayed together…acknowledging and thanking God for His healing power, but also asking Him to bring about the rapid return of Peter’s strength and energy. Dave and Laura Dahlstrom Jeri Wienemko’s grandson, Eric, was visiting with her in the living room when we arrived. His primary concern had been to clear snow from her driveway, but she said that every Sunday is “SIT-too” Day (my attempt to phonetically represent Jeri’s pronunciation of the Syrian word for grandma). Evidently, Jeri has tried to discourage Eric from dedicating so much of his time to her -- “A young man should be doing more exciting things!” -- but she is also grateful to have a grandson who is so faithful, strong and kind! Compared to our previous visits, Jeri seemed a bit down; and she soon revealed that the day marked exactly one year since her husband, Harry, had collapsed on the sidewalk, never again to regain consciousness until he eventually passed on March 7. She expressed that she still dearly misses Harry and how much she had loved and depended on him. It has been a very difficult year for Jeri, but she brightened while recalling how the two of them had met. She and two girlfriends had agreed to go skating with three “fellas.” Initially, Harry hadn’t been Jeri’s first pick, but his “really nice car” gave her reason to reconsider. They eventually got together, and when she brought him home for her parents’ inspection, they spoke what Jeri had already been thinking: “He’s the one!” Our conversation also touched on Jeri’s early days at Bethesda, which came about through the encouragement of longtime Bethesdan, Ace George, who had been a friend of Jeri’s mother and grandmother. After the four of us shared the Lord’s Supper, we asked the Lord to overshadow Jeri in mind, heart, body and soul. We also assured her that Bethesda would continue to lift her up during this transitional period, and we could see the spark of the Holy Spirit in her bright eyes and in her sweet demeanor! James and Mary Visger Mattie Woods had given up hope that I would make my Communion call, as promised. We have known each other for a long time and I told her it would take more than a little snow to keep me away! Her street was indeed snow-covered, passable via two icy ruts down its middle. Portions of her driveway were snow-free, thanks to the efforts of a good neighbor, but Mattie’s PT Cruiser sat at the very end of the drive, buried beneath a veritable mountain of snow and ice! She’d prefer to sell her four-bedroom brick bungalow and move down south to the Atlanta area (near family members); until then, however, she is managing with help from her neighbor and grandson. Please pray for a change in Mattie’s circumstances, which include transportation needs as well as knee and back pain, and that springtime in Michigan will bring more opportunities for Mattie to attend worship services and Sunday school at Bethesda. Tom Delano GFFK Runs on Candy, Volunteers! For kids pre-K through 6th grade, the draw of an Easter-Egg scramble, tons of candy, activities galore and dramatic performances is hard to resist. And Good Friday For Kids has indeed become one of Bethesda’s signature events. But it’s real purpose is to impart the message of The Cross on a level that kids can understand. And over the years it has expanded into an on-site outreach to children in our surrounding neighborhoods and communities. All Bethesdans are encouraged to lend their support to GFFK, whether by dropping Easter candy into the large barrels in the lobby or by volunteering before, during or after the event. Please stop by the Children’s Ministry table for more information. 5 inviting personality always comes shining through. The three of us sat down to a delightful Communion visit, and Rhea and I listened to several of Betty’s wonderful stories…seemingly every one of them a testament to God’s intervention in her life. In fact, as she ministered to us through her personal experiences, it occurred to me how much Betty’s life exemplifies Psalm 100:5 (KJV) – “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations!” Terry and Rhea Allen While waiting outside the cafeteria at the Richmond Medilodge, Dorothy Howton spotted us and declared to all within earshot, “I knew my friends from church were coming today!” A few minutes later, she introduced us to her roommates, one of whom is also named Dorothy, while the other is considered the facility’s best bingo player…just ahead of Dorothy in their ongoing competition! We admired the recent crafts Dorothy created in celebration of Valentine’s Day; and since our previous visit, she has also added to her collection of Elvis memorabilia. Dorothy’s good humor reflects her improved health and her contentment at Medilodge. She seems pleased with all aspects of the facility and loves to extol the excellent quality of its food—giving high marks, in particular, to the cheeseburger and baked potato meal. Before leaving, we prayed with Dorothy, asking God to continue to renew her strength, but also thanking Him for the favor He has shown in her circumstances. Will and Bev Worman Margaret Lau buzzed us into her and Paul’s building and then stepped into the hallway to welcome us inside their apartment. She and Paul had been anticipating March’s Communion visit, and Margaret appeared keenly interested as Dan described Pastor Dunn’s message from earlier that morning: “Be…Hungry and Thirsty.” Truly, Margaret was the very embodiment of someone who is hungry and thirsty for knowledge! As we chatted with one another, Paul spoke of some of the herbal supplements he takes for the relief of arthritis pain. His back pain is also troublesome (some days are worse than others), but Paul didn’t reveal any sign of discomfort during our stay. In fact, with his characteristic wit, he teased Margaret about “taking a trip,” his way of referencing that she had recently fallen, injuring her knee. Margaret assured us that the injury wasn’t serious that that the knee is back to normal. Dan and Dawn Gauthier Over the years, we’ve frequently encountered Catherine and Rosalie Lopiccolo APRIL 2014 before and after church services, but until this month’s Communion visit, we’d never had an opportunity to really get to know one another. The two sisters have attended Bethesda since being led by God 11 years ago, circumstances for which they will always be grateful. Besides sharing a Clinton Township condominium, the two also have a mutual love for baseball and the Detroit Tigers. Apparently it runs in the family, as their brother was an excellent player from his youth well into adulthood. Of course, the sisters are also quick to declare their love for the Lord and a sincere appreciation for Bethesda’s ministerial staff. Eventually, we moved into the Communion service and read from Psalm 46, all of us agreeing how comforting it is to know that God is always near, ready to be our refuge from the storm. Later, we prayed for the ladies’ lingering ailments, including Rosalie’s back pain and Catherine’s stomach discomfort. David and Sharon Richards Luisa Resto was surprised when I arrived with sandwiches, salads and fruit for lunch. We often visit a nearby eatery, but persistent pain makes “eating out” a difficult prospect for her. Instead, we enjoyed good food and sweet fellowship as cheerful sunlight poured into the room. It so happens that Luisa’s apartment is adjacent to her senior-living facility’s secondfloor open balcony, where a grand piano sits. So, after our time of Communion and prayer (and with management’s permission!), the two of us moved to the balcony where I could provide piano accompaniment as we both sang hymns and choruses. Before we were done, some of Luisa’s fellow residents stopped by…either just to listen or to join our impromptu ensemble. Luisa spends much of her time alone, so this was an opportunity not only to sing praises to the Lord, but also to break away from her daily routine. Even so, this lovely lady who has become such a good friend, knows that God’s presence constantly abides with her. Elaine Stoddard Luella Sanders has been in and out of the hospital for the past several weeks, and during that time, Josie and I have observed her in widely varying degrees of health. Consequently, as we entered her room at the independent-living facility where she resides, we were immediately relieved and thankful to encounter a much healthier Luella, who appeared more like her old self! Her conversation was sharp, clear and entertaining as always! She is so much fun to be around…and she and Josie carried on like the old friends they are. It’s always good to be around “real people” like Luella, who has never had a pretentious bone in her body! She raised heartbeat of bethesda a family, held a job, saw to it that her children attended church, prayed, learned about God, sang in the choir, was a wonderful wife to her late husband, and now receives loving care from her daughters. Like so mainly folks of a certain age, Luella is fighting some health problems, but she maintains a positive outlook and keeps God in His rightful place in her life. Eventually, Josie and I departed into the bitterly cold weather with a feeling of satisfaction, having spent a wonderful afternoon with a truly special gal. Thank you, Bethesda, for providing the opportunity. Arnold and Josie Jones Murray Scott is up and around on his new hip. He and Belva, along with Murray’s sister, Carole, welcomed us as family. The sun was shining outside as we took in the picturesque view of the their backyard, where 11 deer had gathered just before our arrival. And the Son was shining inside as we served Communion and Belva led us in a beautiful worship service. We talked of the early years of Bethesda and Murray and Belva Scott with Rev. Julie Visger how connections were made from Detroit all the way to Chatham, Ontario, where the Scotts owned a farm. Murray’s experiences in farming and Belva’s upbringing in a family of nine shaped them as hearty servants of the Lord and Bethesda. Although Belva and Carole were ready, willing and able to serve us, Murray insisted on being the host, serving up pie while exercising his new hip. Communion visits are a time to bless those who are unable to gather with the congregation, but we were once again reminded that in blessing we are blessed. The Scotts’ gift of hospitality is evident, as is their love for Jesus; and Murray gives all the credit to Him for his successful operation and ongong recovery. He looks forward to increased physical therapy, as he and Belva plan to return to church on Easter Sunday. Rev. Pat and Rev. Julie Visger “Homebound” continues on Page 12 6 APRIL 2014 heartbeat of bethesda Two Callings...Two Blessings One Bethesdan’s testimony to a “Call To Samaritanship,” (Submitted anonymously to the Glory of God) On a busy Saturday afternoon of errandrunning, I came across man soliciting for meal money in front of the Post Office. I thought to myself, “Oh no, here is another panhandler…a con artist-type trying to take advantage of good-hearted people… just like the one I’d seen on television, making $60,000 a year tax-free!” The easiest thing to do would have been to give the guy a dollar just to minimize the annoyance. But years ago, I learned from a very wise pastor that one should never give cash to someone asking for help; instead, offer to provide assistance for a specific need. For instance, if someone asks for money for food, give food, not money. If they want cash for a bill, offer to pay the bill. (You get the idea.) With this in mind, I was not about to give the guy any money! I just told him that I had nothing to give and continued on my way. A while later, while driving to pick up my afternoon carry-out meal, I felt challenged by God to give my dinner to the man in front of the Post Office. I prayed (actually argued) with God, suggesting that the guy was just a panhandler, out to take advantage of people. Yet, the conviction to feed him became even stronger. I then said to God, “Okay, Lord, if you really want me to do this, then keep him standing where I left him 45 minutes ago. (I figured that by the time I could get back to the Post Office, the guy would be long gone, confirming that I hadn’t really heard from the Lord!) When I eventually reached the Post Office, I was surprised to see the man standing in the same place. I approached him skeptically and inquired whether he was still hungry. He replied, “Yes.” I then asked whether he would eat my carry-out meal and do so immediately, right in front of me. He agreed. So, I handed him the meal, and while he consumed it beneath the Post Office awning, I asked about his story. He replied that both he and his wife had fallen on hard times. A severe automobile accident had injured them both—him more than her—and during his recuperation away from work, his employer cut him loose. Not long afterward, his wife was laid-off due to the slow economy. They eventually lost their house and moved to a low-cost apartment in Lincoln Park. However, because their insurance settlement was still undecided (they’d been forced to pursue it through the court system), the couple was finding it difficult to make even a reduced monthly payment. Even so, he told me that they have learned to take life one day at a time and not worry about tomorrow. He thanked me for the meal and said that he and his wife also appreciate all the churches that have provided help from time to time. I shared the Gospel with him and asked whether he knew Jesus Christ as Savior. We also prayed, asking that God would pour out His blessings upon the man and his family. After we parted, I watched him walk to a nearby bus stop (using a cane for support) and eventually board the bus headed toward Lincoln Park. Had this been a con job? I do not think so, but you decide for yourself. All I know is that the LORD challenged me to feed this person; and in retrospect, I am glad that I did. I regret my argument with God--but there are so many con artists out there, it’s difficult to discern a con from a person who is legitimately in need. Praise to Almighty God for his wonderful, sovereign Grace! Well, my story doesn’t end here. On the following Saturday, as I exited a Salvation Army store, a young woman with two small children (one in a stroller), attempted to flag me down. I thought to myself, “Oh no, another con artist! Do I have ‘stupid’ written across my face?” I did my best to ignore her, but she relentlessly approached my vehicle and asked for help. She told me that she had lost her job, had just moved out of the house she’d shared with an abusive boyfriend, and was now in need of food for her children. She even volunteered to produce her drivers license (presumably to convince me of her sincerity) and promised to eventually pay me back for any food I could purchase on their behalf. When a person’s story appears to have all the bases covered, I usually suspect a con job. And this seemed a lot like a con job to me! I quickly prayed and asked God for immediate wisdom and discernment; and based on the fact that she was not directly asking for money, I reluctantly accompanied her to a Rite-Aid store in the same parking lot. She asked only for some breakfast cereal, a loaf of bread, and a half-gallon of milk. When her older son asked for a candy bar, she rebuked him, saying that they had no money and that she would not take advantage of my kindness. This exchange between a young mother and her son affected me; so I told her than a 50cent candy bar was not a big deal. Afterward, I advised her to contact a Christian church for additional help. But with obvious anger, she stated that she’d been down that road, and because she’d “lived in sin” and was now an unwed mother, her appeal for help had been refused. I was caught off guard by her reply; but I told her that I could not comment on one church’s response. Instead, I assured her that God loves and cares deeply for her and her children. I also explained that not all Christian churches are the same and that she shouldn’t give up because of one negative experience. I also pointed out that only God is perfect! Well-meaning “Christians” don’t always do the right thing, perhaps because they don’t fully understand God’s Word. Once again, I assured her of God’s love, and her anger soon dissipated. As we prepared to go our separate ways, she thanked me, declaring that God blesses those who help the poor and that He would certainly bless me! I now consider her words prophetic, which I will explain momentarily. Had this been a con job? What do you think? In reflecting on my encounter with the young mother, I realized that I had been so concerned about being conned, that I failed to share the Gospel with the young mother. Hindsight is always 20-20, but I feel as though I really blew that opportunity. If I could have a second chance, I would do things differently. Not only would I share the Gospel message, I would also tell her about the Woman at the Well (John 4:726). My hope is that all who read this testimony will benefit from my mistake and be ready to preach the Word “...in and out of season...” (2 Timothy 4:1-2). Around the same time that these events occurred (and unbeknownst to me), my employer was making decisions about who would be released and who would be retained in two separate layoffs. I am now convinced that because I was obedient to God’s “Call To Samaritanship” (albeit with imperfect execution), He rewarded me by influencing my employer’s decision--not once, but twice! “Coincidence”, you say! I strongly disagree. Think about it: Two separate “callings” to help someone…and two layoffs from which I was spared. This is why I consider the young mother’s words to be prophetic. God has indeed blessed me! Praise His name forever!! 11 APRIL 2014 BCC’s 2014-15 JBQ Team Summaries League B - Advanced League B - Novice “Children of God” “Golden Hearts” Coach: Katreece McIntyre 1st Place - 20 Wins 1 Loss Coach: Connie Marchesi 2nd Place - 14 Wins 4 Losses heartbeat of bethesda Pursuing Biblical Knowledge Each season, Bethesda’s JBQ kids demonstrate their growing knowledge of the Bible by acquiring seals from JBQ’s National organization. B ethesda’s Junior Bible Quiz ministry has completed another awesome year that, above all else, has provided an opportunity for 21 children (K-6) to study God’s Word and secure it in their hearts. JBQ promotes the learning of Bible facts and verses in a fun and competitive environment that not only introduces children to the Bible, but also develops a genuine love for God’s Word and an understanding of how its truths can be a guidebook for our daily lives. The quizzing aspect of JBQ is a natural incentive to children that stimulates a desire to learn and naturally develops teamwork skills. In fact, through “cooperative learning,” JBQ kids eventually memorize and understand 576 Bible-related questions and answers. children also have an opportunity to demonstrate their developing Bible knowledge outside of the competitive environment. Once the JBQ participant feels sufficiently prepared, he or she demonstrates their achievement by correctly answering a pre-determined minimum number of random questions. Through this process, our quizzers earn seals from the JBQ National organization, including the Discover Seal (10-point excellence), the Searcher Seal (10 and 20-point excellence), the Achiever Seal (10, 20 and 30-point excellence) and the Master Seal (demonstrating excellence in all point values with a maximum of one incorrect response). Refer to the Pursing Biblical Knowledge sidebar for a listing of this year’s seal recipients. Once each month, our JBQ kids engage teams from other churches in spirited quizzing matches. A match consists of two teams whose individual members attempt to answer 20 spoken questions of varying point values (10, 20 and 30). The Quiz Master speaks each question, and members from both teams press their buzzers as quickly as possible for the right to respond. JBQ competitions (a.k.a. meets) are hosted by participating churches and take place on the second Saturday of the month. Meets held in October and November are considered the exhibition season and are used primarily to place teams into one of three leagues based on the members’ ages and skill levels. With league assignments established, JBQ’s three-month regular season begins in January. In April, Bethesda sends three teams to the Junior Bible Quiz State Festival in Midland, Michigan. Our most experienced team, the Children of God will complete as our League A representative; The Unstoppable Bible Quizzers will be a force in League B matches; and a combined group of Bethesda Bible Bees will bring their enthusiastic best to League C. Be sure to pick up the May issue of the Heartbeat of Bethesda for all the results! Naturally, the ability to buzz-in quickly during a JBQ match is an important ingredient to success. However, because imparting the Word of God is JBQ’s primary purpose, If you’re a parent with children in Kindergarten through 6th Grade, Bethesda’s Children’s Ministry invites you to stop by the JBQ lobby table (Sundays in May) for details about the 2014-15 season.
