An Update From Life Challenge
Dear Bethesda:
As Life Challenge looks back on its 50-year history, we are consistently amazed by the grace of God.
He has extended His grace to Life Challenge and used the ministry to change the lives of men and
women suffering from addiction. We are awed by the graciousness of our Lord!
I would be remiss to not personally thank the body of believers at Bethesda Christian Church for their
faithfulness to us. You’ve been part of our history-during our highs and our lows--always faithful to
diligently pray and intercede on our behalf. So as we prepare to mark our
50th anniversary, we hope you will complete our celebration by joining
us! Featuring keynote speaker, Pastor Tim Dilena of “The Springs Church”
in Colorado Springs, the evening promises to be uplifting and a showcase
of God’s awesome might and grace. Please honor us with your presence

BCC Holy Week Schedule (No Thursday Service)
Bethesda’s observance of Holy Week begins with our 10 AM worship service on Palm Sunday (April 13), featuring musical ministry
by the BCC Worship Choir. Wednesday, April 16 is Prayer Night,an opportunity for the whole church to solemnly acknowledge Jesus’
sacrifice and to follow His example at Gethsemane, seeking His presence and blessings upon our Good Friday and Easter services.
Please remember that Good Friday is a family day at Bethesda. The school’s doors open at 12:30 PM for Good Friday For Kids to
allow time for parents to register their children prior to the adult Good Friday Service at 1 PM. Please note that in view of Holy Week
activities, no Thursday worship service is scheduled on April 17.

The Bible is the standard for life. Christians consider it to be His inerrant word,
inspired by the Holy Spirit. In fact, it’s
more than a book; it is actually a collection of 66 books, written over a span of
nearly 2000 years to sundry people and
cultures. As such, it often presents interpretive challenges to today’s readers.
What can be said of some of the more difficult passages of the Bible? Can they be
interpreted and applied in the 21st century? Join us for a look at the Hard Sayings
of the Bible and gain an understanding of
the most challenging passages in God’s
perfect Word.
Life is a gift of time from God. It includes
a start, an end, and a predetermined
set of days in between. The discussions
in this class will center around what
we are doing with our days. Could
we be making more of a difference
in the world with our lives? All of us
want lives that are marked by success,
but are we also using significance as a
standard for the best use of the days
God has granted us? And considering
the multiple aspects of our lives, how
do we prioritize significance? Find
out as we delve into the importance
of evaluating our life achievements by
significance as well as success.
Did you know there are over 2,350 verses in
the Bible that pertain to money? Have you noticed that nearly half of Jesus’ parables relate
to possessions? The Bible is packed with wise
counsel on finances. In fact, Jesus had more to
say about money than about heaven and hell
combined. Money Matters conveys the sage
financial wisdom of the Bible through video
presentation and small-group discussions, encouraging immediate application and results!
Additionally, the course workbook affords students the opportunity to revisit topics, thereby promoting long-term adherence to the biblical principles on money management. Please

“Cruising With The Pastor” -- Holy Land, Eastern Mediterranean
Although Bethesda’s cruise ship to the Holy Land doesn’t weigh anchor for another 18
months, time is of the essence for interested travelers. That’s because the $450 deposit
is due by the end of the month (Wednesday, April 30, 2014). Visit any information rack

BCC’s Thursday Worship to observe May 1 National Day of Prayer
On May 1, God’s people across America will stop what they’re doing to congregate
as “One Voice United In Prayer.” At Bethesda, we’ll contribute to that voice during a
special edition of our 10 AM Thursday worship service. Please join us as Bethesda’s
team of ministers lead a humble expression of prayer and praise so that we may “with
one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:6 (ESV)

Heroes of Faith Bible Study - Tuesdays at 9:30 AM, Crystal A

The Men of Iron Sharpens Iron Gathers Thursday, April 17 at 7 PM
BCC’s ministry for men convenes on the Family Center Mezzanine on the third Thursday of each month. The
evenings provide a relaxed setting where Christian men can develop to their full potential as leaders in their
families, church and communities. The official starting time is 7 PM, but there’s a tendency to arrive early to
enjoy conversation and to savor the hardy food and a variety of beverages. Any way you slice it, Iron Sharpens
Iron is an enriching experience that’s not to be missed!

One Way: The Right Choice for BCC’s 30+ Singles
Bethesda’s 30+ singles group, One Way, meets Sundays at 9 AM in Room 111 for an edifying time of Bible study
and open discussion. It’s an engaging atmosphere where singles can share ideas and opinions with men and
women who love the Lord. One Way also enjoys frequent off-site outings where a good meal, recreation and
fellowship offer ample opportunities to building lasting friendships. So, drop by Room 111 next Sunday and see
why One Way is a truly singular experience!

Sisters Cancer Support Group - 7 PM, Wednesday, April 16
If you’ve had cancer in the past or are currently battling cancer or another long-term illness, we encourage
you to meet with other women to learn and discuss the Shelter of God’s Promises. At Sisters you will be
comforted, supported and loved by other women who have endured a similar journey. The group meets
on the third Wednesday of each month in Room 103.
Women At The Well - 7 PM, One Tuesday Per Month
The word is out concerning Women at the Well, Bethesda’s monthly evening series that’s for, by and about
women. Featuring inspirational testimonies from ladies of Bethesda’s congregation, lively small-group
discussions, and messages that focus on outstanding women of the Bible, the 90-minute gathering is an
uplifting testament to God’s power and faithfulness in our lives. The Women at the Well series convenes
at 7 PM in the Crystal Dining Room on designated Tuesday evenings, including April 22’s gathering, when
we’ll be joined by featured speaker, Lila Place, Parkway Christian School’s Head of School.

Updates on our Homebound Friends
Communion is available to Bethesda members who are in the hospital, homebound or in nursing care. Contact Rev. Barry Allen
at the church office at least two weeks before the first Sunday of the month to be placed on the schedule. To be served, the
recipient must be available on the first Sunday afternoon of the month, unless other arrangements are made with the church or the
assigned elder or deacon. You can reach Rev. Barry Allen at 586-264-2300, Ext. 114 or email him at [email protected].
Our visit with Dolores Braxton on the first
Sunday of March was shorter than usual,
as she was feeling only fair and her brother,
Mr. Dean, had an errand to run. Mrs. Braxton always looks forward to our fellowship
and our time of Communion, and praises
the Lord every day for His gift of life! And
even on days when she does not feel
physically fit, she is always spiritually fit…
a devoted prayer warrior, ever mindful of
God’s amazing grace. She never fails to lift
up her family in prayer and responds with
wisdom and knowledge to their questions
about God. In fact, her grandniece, Amy,
was also on hand to receive the Bread and
Cup, as her baby boy, Zaire, slept soundly
on the couch. Jerry and Debbie Pantano
Through our monthly visits with Sophia
Carol, we have come to appreciate her
terrific sense of humor. She continues to
make strides in her recovery from a bonemarrow transplant and told us how much
she recently enjoyed the opportunity to
grocery-shop for the first time in a year.
She meandered through the store for three
hours until finally realizing that she needed
to get out before she spent all of her money! What an inspiration she is to us! It’s
been a long year, but Sophia is grateful for
every new day in spite of having been shutin during a very long and cold winter. We
prayed that her strength would continue
to build and enable her to return to church
in the near future. At this, Sophia requested prayer on behalf of people she knows
who also need to be in church. Obviously,
Sophia is a dedicated Christian who witnesses wherever she can…using whatever
is in her hands! Michael & Deborah Quire
Dolores Chesbrough looked lovely and was
in excellent spirits as we gathered for Communion and fellowship. Although most of
her twelve children live out of state, her
youngest son, Todd, lives with her and is
an attentive caregiver. Since this was our
first Communion visit with Dolores, she related a good deal of her personal history
at Bethesda; and there’s no mistaking her
desire to resume regular attendance, especially on Thursday mornings! She spoke
fondly of the service itself and also of her
friends who comprise the Thursday faithful. She trusts that the Lord will soon heal
her and looks forward to a happy reunion
in worship and fellowship. Meanwhile, she
appreciates the excellent care Bethesda
provides to its homebound members. As
we got to know more about each other,
Dolores told us that she likes to write…even
showing us a sample of her work (a poem)
from 1983. In fact, one of her goals is to
further that interest, perhaps with the help
of her daughter, a New York City resident.
Later, as we moved toward prayer time,
Dolores asked for the healing of her severe
arthritic condition and that the Lord would
guide her as she contemplates the sale of
her home and future living accommodations. Scott and Heather Wanamaker
On Communion Sunday in March, we made
our way to the Village of East Harbor. As
we walked toward the rehabilitation unit,
the receptionist recognized us and said,
“Gunvor (Dalen) is back in independent
living!” We were thrilled at the news because it had been Gunvor’s desire to regain
sufficient strength to move back into her
own room. We found her in a different
location than the one she’d previously occupied, but it was still very nice, boasting
a fresh coat of paint and crown moldings.
The walls, however, were still bare, devoid
of Gunvor’s beloved possessions that add a
warm and beautiful touch to her surroundings. She was eagerly anticipating the return of her daughter-in-law, Kim Dalen (visiting in Norway), whose decorating skills
Gunvor admires and appreciates: “Kim has
an eye for these things!” As always, we enjoyed our time of Communion and prayer.
Although Gunvor is not one to complain-always mindful of God’s gifts of life and
salvation--we nonetheless petitioned the
Lord to take away her pain and to further
strengthen her body. Before concluding
our visit, we briefly noted the March issue
of the Heartbeat of Bethesda and its cover
photo of the Stitch Chix. Gunvor quickly recalled that this fine group of talented ladies
was responsible for the handmade Christmas gifts she had received. We then said
our good-byes, allowing Gunvor to enjoy
some quality rest (doctor’s orders!).

Elvera Esler (Gail’s aunt) has a marvelous
relationship with the staff at her independent-living facility. And as we chatted following Communion and prayer,
she mentioned that, earlier that morning,
one of the “workers” (someone Don and
I do not recall meeting) had asked about
her “niece and her husband” and whether
they were planning to drop by to serve
Communion. On one hand, it’s amazing to
think of how many people may be watching when we don’t even realize it, but it’s
hardly surprising how Aunt Elvera’s warm
and friendly ways naturally cause people
to take an interest in her life! She had finished lunch just prior to our arrival and had
made plans to attend a small “concert in
the park,” held in the complex’s beautiful
atrium building. So, before concluding our
time together, we presented Elvera with a
15-year-old photo of herself and her sisters. She was very grateful for this family
keepsake, but also for her loving family
members and, most of all, for God’s love
and grace! Don and Gail Toth
Isabel Ferianc and her daughter, Rose,
gave us a warm welcome upon our arrival
for March’s Communion visit. We talked
for a while, covering just about everything
that had occurred since our previous meeting. One unfortunate incident resulted in
hip surgery for Isabel. She fractured it in
a fall, but surgeons determined that the
damage could be repaired with the aid of
three pins, which were installed on January 30. Shortly after the operation, Isabel
entered a rehabilitation facility, but Rose
soon decided that Isabel’s overall health
and recovery would be better served at
home. As a result, Isabel continues to work
diligently during her physical therapy sessions, but can do so without leaving her
comfortable surroundings. After sharing
the Lord’s Supper, we prayed together,
asking God to oversee Isabel’s complete
healing and the restoration of her mobility.

Emmy Fitzpatrick is such a lovely lady and
truly blessed us as we all became acquainted and shared the Lord’s Supper. She lives
in the assisted-living side of Waltonwood
(just off the “ring road” that surrounds
Lakeside Mall) and shares her apartment
with another lady. Emmy rested in bed
throughout our visit, but informed us that
she gets up each morning and eats all of
her meals in the main dining room. After
Communion, we asked God to send His
healing touch to her knees and legs, which
have been a troublesome source of pain.

A Changing of the Guard in The Balanced Christian
Like so many men of faith before him,
Doug Kaherl was initially uncertain as to
how to respond to an apparent calling
to teach one of Bethesda’s adult Sunday
School classes. As a small-group leader in
Bethesda’s Catechism department, Doug
had been urged by longtime Bethesdan
Rev. Dan Adams to take the reins of The
Balanced Christian, stressing a “back to
basics” approach. Doug even noticed
certain signs that seemed to corroborate
Rev. Adam’s advice; but it wasn’t until

that he became convinced of God’s di-
rection in his life. Roughly 15 years later,
on Sunday, March 30, his class members,
several other Bethesdans and his successors gave Doug a warm send-off as he
moves onward to the next chapter in his
life. Though we’ll always be grateful for
Doug’s exemplary qualities as an instructor and leader, he leaves The Balanced
Christian in good hands. Co-instructors
Arnold Jones and Winferd Bailey have already begun a new series titled The Fruit
of the Spirit. Jesus said that we can tell the
quality of a man by his fruit. But what is

Homebound Friends Continued From Page 5
When we arrived at the home of Steve
Serra, we were greeted by Carol, who had
been shoveling her way out of the Detroit
area’s most recent Sunday-morning snowfall. Inside, we found Steve in good spirits,
but he admitted to some discomfort from
a new liver-related drainage tube. His attitude is truly amazing and the Lord has
certainly granted His peace and comfort to
the Serras throughout Steve’s lengthy ordeal. Both Steve and Carol shared stories
of the Lord’s faithfulness in meeting their
family’s needs. Their amazing account of
God’s provision and rich blessings ministered to us all! After sharing the Communion Table, we asked God to keep His hand
on Steve, Carol and their daughters, that
they would all remain strong throughout
this trial. Although we continuously pray
for Steve’s healing, we are also mindful
and appreciative of his excellent example
to the church...not only of God’s faithfulness, but also of the Serras’ unwavering

Fred Unruh looks forward to our monthly
time of Communion and fellowship (the
feeling is mutual!) and he was ready for
us when we arrived. He looks good and
says he feels good too, with the exception
of diminished hearing and vision. But he
doesn’t consider them serious setbacks
because neither prevents him from pursuing his interests and favorite activities.
He enjoys life at Sanctuary at Bellbrook,
including the interaction with fellow residents, particularly at mealtime, when his
group of friends convenes at their favorite table. The three of us spent time in the
Word and appreciated the opportunity
to commune with the Lord. Afterward,
we talked about the days when Fred first
made his way to Michigan…from Kansas by

During our Communion visit in early
March, Peter Vandekerkhof declared that
he is not afraid and knows in his heart
that he is healed. Naturally, he is worn
out from the ordeal of chemotherapy, but
Peter was in high spirits, and both he and
Teeny (wife, Martina) looked wonderful!
After partaking of the Bread and Cup, all
of us prayed together…acknowledging and
thanking God for His healing power, but
also asking Him to bring about the rapid
return of Peter’s strength and energy.

Jeri Wienemko’s grandson, Eric, was visiting with her in the living room when we
arrived. His primary concern had been to
clear snow from her driveway, but she said
that every Sunday is “SIT-too” Day (my attempt to phonetically represent Jeri’s pronunciation of the Syrian word for grandma). Evidently, Jeri has tried to discourage
Eric from dedicating so much of his time to
her -- “A young man should be doing more
exciting things!” -- but she is also grateful to have a grandson who is so faithful,
strong and kind! Compared to our previous visits, Jeri seemed a bit down; and she
soon revealed that the day marked exactly one year since her husband, Harry, had
collapsed on the sidewalk, never again to
regain consciousness until he eventually
passed on March 7. She expressed that
she still dearly misses Harry and how much
she had loved and depended on him. It has
been a very difficult year for Jeri, but she
brightened while recalling how the two of
them had met. She and two girlfriends had
agreed to go skating with three “fellas.”
Initially, Harry hadn’t been Jeri’s first pick,
but his “really nice car” gave her reason to
reconsider. They eventually got together,
and when she brought him home for her
parents’ inspection, they spoke what Jeri
had already been thinking: “He’s the one!”
Our conversation also touched on Jeri’s
early days at Bethesda, which came about
through the encouragement of longtime
Bethesdan, Ace George, who had been a
friend of Jeri’s mother and grandmother.
After the four of us shared the Lord’s Supper, we asked the Lord to overshadow Jeri
in mind, heart, body and soul. We also assured her that Bethesda would continue
to lift her up during this transitional period, and we could see the spark of the Holy
Spirit in her bright eyes and in her sweet
demeanor! James and Mary Visger
Mattie Woods had given up hope that I
would make my Communion call, as promised. We have known each other for a long
time and I told her it would take more
than a little snow to keep me away! Her
street was indeed snow-covered, passable via two icy ruts down its middle.
Portions of her driveway were snow-free,
thanks to the efforts of a good neighbor,
but Mattie’s PT Cruiser sat at the very end
of the drive, buried beneath a veritable
mountain of snow and ice! She’d prefer
to sell her four-bedroom brick bungalow
and move down south to the Atlanta area
(near family members); until then, however, she is managing with help from her
neighbor and grandson. Please pray for a
change in Mattie’s circumstances, which
include transportation needs as well as
knee and back pain, and that springtime
in Michigan will bring more opportunities
for Mattie to attend worship services and
Sunday school at Bethesda. Tom Delano
GFFK Runs on Candy, Volunteers!
For kids pre-K through 6th grade, the draw of an
Easter-Egg scramble, tons of candy, activities galore
and dramatic performances is hard to resist. And
Good Friday For Kids has indeed become one of
Bethesda’s signature events. But it’s real purpose is to
impart the message of The Cross on a level that kids
can understand. And over the years it has expanded
into an on-site outreach to children in our surrounding
neighborhoods and communities. All Bethesdans are
encouraged to lend their support to GFFK, whether
by dropping Easter candy into the large barrels in the
lobby or by volunteering before, during or after the
event. Please stop by the Children’s Ministry table for
more information.

inviting personality always comes shining
through. The three of us sat down to a
delightful Communion visit, and Rhea and
I listened to several of Betty’s wonderful
stories…seemingly every one of them a
testament to God’s intervention in her life.
In fact, as she ministered to us through
her personal experiences, it occurred
to me how much Betty’s life exemplifies
Psalm 100:5 (KJV) – “For the Lord is good;
his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations!”

While waiting outside the cafeteria at the
Richmond Medilodge, Dorothy Howton
spotted us and declared to all within earshot, “I knew my friends from church were
coming today!” A few minutes later, she
introduced us to her roommates, one of
whom is also named Dorothy, while the
other is considered the facility’s best bingo player…just ahead of Dorothy in their
ongoing competition! We admired the recent crafts Dorothy created in celebration
of Valentine’s Day; and since our previous
visit, she has also added to her collection
of Elvis memorabilia. Dorothy’s good humor reflects her improved health and her
contentment at Medilodge. She seems
pleased with all aspects of the facility and
loves to extol the excellent quality of its
food—giving high marks, in particular, to
the cheeseburger and baked potato meal.
Before leaving, we prayed with Dorothy, asking God to continue to renew her
strength, but also thanking Him for the
favor He has shown in her circumstances.

Margaret Lau buzzed us into her and
Paul’s building and then stepped into the
hallway to welcome us inside their apartment. She and Paul had been anticipating
March’s Communion visit, and Margaret
appeared keenly interested as Dan described Pastor Dunn’s message from earlier that morning: “Be…Hungry and Thirsty.”
Truly, Margaret was the very embodiment
of someone who is hungry and thirsty for
knowledge! As we chatted with one another, Paul spoke of some of the herbal
supplements he takes for the relief of arthritis pain. His back pain is also troublesome (some days are worse than others),
but Paul didn’t reveal any sign of discomfort during our stay. In fact, with his characteristic wit, he teased Margaret about
“taking a trip,” his way of referencing that
she had recently fallen, injuring her knee.
Margaret assured us that the injury wasn’t
serious that that the knee is back to normal. Dan and Dawn Gauthier
Over the years, we’ve frequently encountered Catherine and Rosalie Lopiccolo

before and after church services, but until
this month’s Communion visit, we’d never
had an opportunity to really get to know
one another. The two sisters have attended
Bethesda since being led by God 11 years
ago, circumstances for which they will always be grateful. Besides sharing a Clinton
Township condominium, the two also have
a mutual love for baseball and the Detroit
Tigers. Apparently it runs in the family, as
their brother was an excellent player from
his youth well into adulthood. Of course,
the sisters are also quick to declare their
love for the Lord and a sincere appreciation for Bethesda’s ministerial staff. Eventually, we moved into the Communion
service and read from Psalm 46, all of us
agreeing how comforting it is to know that
God is always near, ready to be our refuge
from the storm. Later, we prayed for the
ladies’ lingering ailments, including Rosalie’s back pain and Catherine’s stomach
discomfort. David and Sharon Richards
Luisa Resto was surprised when I arrived with sandwiches, salads and fruit
for lunch. We often visit a nearby eatery,
but persistent pain makes “eating out” a
difficult prospect for her. Instead, we enjoyed good food and sweet fellowship as
cheerful sunlight poured into the room. It
so happens that Luisa’s apartment is adjacent to her senior-living facility’s secondfloor open balcony, where a grand piano
sits. So, after our time of Communion and
prayer (and with management’s permission!), the two of us moved to the balcony
where I could provide piano accompaniment as we both sang hymns and choruses. Before we were done, some of Luisa’s
fellow residents stopped by…either just to
listen or to join our impromptu ensemble.
Luisa spends much of her time alone, so
this was an opportunity not only to sing
praises to the Lord, but also to break away
from her daily routine. Even so, this lovely
lady who has become such a good friend,
knows that God’s presence constantly
abides with her. Elaine Stoddard
Luella Sanders has been in and out of
the hospital for the past several weeks,
and during that time, Josie and I have observed her in widely varying degrees of
health. Consequently, as we entered her
room at the independent-living facility
where she resides, we were immediately
relieved and thankful to encounter a much
healthier Luella, who appeared more like
her old self! Her conversation was sharp,
clear and entertaining as always! She is
so much fun to be around…and she and
Josie carried on like the old friends they
are. It’s always good to be around “real
people” like Luella, who has never had a
pretentious bone in her body! She raised
heartbeat of bethesda
a family, held a job, saw to it that her children attended church, prayed, learned
about God, sang in the choir, was a wonderful wife to her late husband, and now
receives loving care from her daughters.
Like so mainly folks of a certain age, Luella
is fighting some health problems, but she
maintains a positive outlook and keeps
God in His rightful place in her life. Eventually, Josie and I departed into the bitterly
cold weather with a feeling of satisfaction,
having spent a wonderful afternoon with a
truly special gal. Thank you, Bethesda, for
providing the opportunity.

Murray Scott is up and around on his new
hip. He and Belva, along with Murray’s
sister, Carole, welcomed us as family. The
sun was shining outside as we took in the
picturesque view of the their backyard,
where 11 deer had gathered just before
our arrival. And the Son was shining inside as we served Communion and Belva
led us in a beautiful worship service. We
talked of the early years of Bethesda and
Murray and Belva Scott with Rev. Julie Visger
how connections were made from Detroit
all the way to Chatham, Ontario, where
the Scotts owned a farm. Murray’s experiences in farming and Belva’s upbringing
in a family of nine shaped them as hearty
servants of the Lord and Bethesda. Although Belva and Carole were ready, willing and able to serve us, Murray insisted
on being the host, serving up pie while
exercising his new hip. Communion visits
are a time to bless those who are unable
to gather with the congregation, but we
were once again reminded that in blessing
we are blessed. The Scotts’ gift of hospitality is evident, as is their love for Jesus; and
Murray gives all the credit to Him for his
successful operation and ongong recovery. He looks forward to increased physical
therapy, as he and Belva plan to return to

Two Callings...Two Blessings
One Bethesdan’s testimony to a “Call To Samaritanship,”
(Submitted anonymously to the Glory of God)
On a busy Saturday afternoon of errandrunning, I came across man soliciting for
meal money in front of the Post Office. I
thought to myself, “Oh no, here is another panhandler…a con artist-type trying to
take advantage of good-hearted people…
just like the one I’d seen on television, making $60,000 a year tax-free!” The easiest
thing to do would have been to give the
guy a dollar just to minimize the annoyance. But years ago, I learned from a very
wise pastor that one should never give
cash to someone asking for help; instead,
offer to provide assistance for a specific
need. For instance, if someone asks for
money for food, give food, not money. If
they want cash for a bill, offer to pay the
bill. (You get the idea.) With this in mind, I
was not about to give the guy any money! I
just told him that I had nothing to give and
continued on my way.
A while later, while driving to pick up my
afternoon carry-out meal, I felt challenged
by God to give my dinner to the man in
front of the Post Office. I prayed (actually
argued) with God, suggesting that the guy
was just a panhandler, out to take advantage of people. Yet, the conviction to feed
him became even stronger. I then said to
God, “Okay, Lord, if you really want me to
do this, then keep him standing where I left
him 45 minutes ago. (I figured that by the
time I could get back to the Post Office, the
guy would be long gone, confirming that I
hadn’t really heard from the Lord!) When
I eventually reached the Post Office, I was
surprised to see the man standing in the
same place. I approached him skeptically
and inquired whether he was still hungry.
He replied, “Yes.” I then asked whether he
would eat my carry-out meal and do so immediately, right in front of me. He agreed.
So, I handed him the meal, and while he
consumed it beneath the Post Office awning, I asked about his story. He replied
that both he and his wife had fallen on
hard times. A severe automobile accident
had injured them both—him more than
her—and during his recuperation away
from work, his employer cut him loose.
Not long afterward, his wife was laid-off
due to the slow economy. They eventually
lost their house and moved to a low-cost
apartment in Lincoln Park. However, because their insurance settlement was still
undecided (they’d been forced to pursue
it through the court system), the couple
was finding it difficult to make even a reduced monthly payment. Even so, he told
me that they have learned to take life one
day at a time and not worry about tomorrow. He thanked me for the meal and said
that he and his wife also appreciate all the
churches that have provided help from
time to time. I shared the Gospel with him
and asked whether he knew Jesus Christ
as Savior. We also prayed, asking that God
would pour out His blessings upon the man
and his family.
After we parted, I watched him walk to a
nearby bus stop (using a cane for support)
and eventually board the bus headed toward Lincoln Park. Had this been a con job?
I do not think so, but you decide for yourself. All I know is that the LORD challenged
me to feed this person; and in retrospect,
I am glad that I did. I regret my argument
with God--but there are so many con artists out there, it’s difficult to discern a con
from a person who is legitimately in need.
Praise to Almighty God for his wonderful,
sovereign Grace!
Well, my story doesn’t end here. On the
following Saturday, as I exited a Salvation
Army store, a young woman with two small
children (one in a stroller), attempted to
flag me down. I thought to myself, “Oh no,
another con artist! Do I have ‘stupid’ written across my face?” I did my best to ignore her, but she relentlessly approached
my vehicle and asked for help. She told me
that she had lost her job, had just moved
out of the house she’d shared with an abusive boyfriend, and was now in need of
food for her children. She even volunteered
to produce her drivers license (presumably
to convince me of her sincerity) and promised to eventually pay me back for any food
I could purchase on their behalf.
When a person’s story appears to have all
the bases covered, I usually suspect a con
job. And this seemed a lot like a con job
to me! I quickly prayed and asked God for
immediate wisdom and discernment; and
based on the fact that she was not directly
asking for money, I reluctantly accompanied her to a Rite-Aid store in the same
parking lot. She asked only for some breakfast cereal, a loaf of bread, and a half-gallon of milk. When her older son asked for
a candy bar, she rebuked him, saying that
they had no money and that she would not
take advantage of my kindness. This exchange between a young mother and her
son affected me; so I told her than a 50cent candy bar was not a big deal.
Afterward, I advised her to contact a Christian church for additional help. But with
obvious anger, she stated that she’d been
down that road, and because she’d “lived
in sin” and was now an unwed mother, her
appeal for help had been refused. I was
caught off guard by her reply; but I told her
that I could not comment on one church’s
response. Instead, I assured her that God
loves and cares deeply for her and her
children. I also explained that not all Christian churches are the same and that she
shouldn’t give up because of one negative
experience. I also pointed out that only God
is perfect! Well-meaning “Christians” don’t
always do the right thing, perhaps because
they don’t fully understand God’s Word.
Once again, I assured her of God’s love, and
her anger soon dissipated. As we prepared
to go our separate ways, she thanked me,
declaring that God blesses those who help
the poor and that He would certainly bless
me! I now consider her words prophetic,
which I will explain momentarily. Had this
been a con job? What do you think?
In reflecting on my encounter with the
young mother, I realized that I had been
so concerned about being conned, that I
failed to share the Gospel with the young
mother. Hindsight is always 20-20, but I feel
as though I really blew that opportunity. If
I could have a second chance, I would do
things differently. Not only would I share
the Gospel message, I would also tell her
about the Woman at the Well (John 4:726). My hope is that all who read this testimony will benefit from my mistake and be
ready to preach the Word “...in and out of
season...” (2 Timothy 4:1-2).
Around the same time that these events
occurred (and unbeknownst to me), my
employer was making decisions about who
would be released and who would be retained in two separate layoffs. I am now
convinced that because I was obedient to
God’s “Call To Samaritanship” (albeit with
imperfect execution), He rewarded me by
influencing my employer’s decision--not
once, but twice! “Coincidence”, you say!
I strongly disagree. Think about it: Two
separate “callings” to help someone…and
two layoffs from which I was spared. This is
why I consider the young mother’s words
to be prophetic. God has indeed blessed
me! Praise His name forever!!

BCC Congratulates Its Dedicated Junior Bible Quizzers!
B
ethesda’s Junior Bible Quiz ministry
has completed another awesome
year that, above all else, has
provided an opportunity for 21 children
(K-6) to study God’s Word and secure it in
their hearts. JBQ promotes the learning
of Bible facts and verses in a fun and
competitive environment that not only
introduces children to the Bible, but also
develops a genuine love for God’s Word
and an understanding of how its truths
can be a guidebook for our daily lives. The
quizzing aspect of JBQ is a natural incentive
to children that stimulates a desire to learn

kids eventually memorize and understand

outside of the competitive environment.
Once the JBQ participant feels sufficiently
prepared, he or she demonstrates their
achievement by correctly answering a
pre-determined minimum number of random questions. Through this process, our
quizzers earn seals from the JBQ National
organization, including the Discover Seal
(10-point excellence), the Searcher Seal
(10 and 20-point excellence), the Achiever
Seal (10, 20 and 30-point excellence) and
the Master Seal (demonstrating excellence
in all point values with a maximum of one
incorrect response). Refer to the Pursing
Biblical Knowledge sidebar for a listing of
this year’s seal recipients.
Once each month, our JBQ kids engage
teams from other churches in spirited
quizzing matches. A match consists of two
teams whose individual members attempt
to answer 20 spoken questions of varying
point values (10, 20 and 30). The Quiz Master speaks each question, and members
from both teams press their buzzers as
quickly as possible for the right to respond.
JBQ competitions (a.k.a. meets) are hosted
by participating churches and take place
on the second Saturday of the month.
Meets held in October and November are
considered the exhibition season and are
used primarily to place teams into one of
three leagues based on the members’ ages
and skill levels. With league assignments
established, JBQ’s three-month regular
season begins in January.
In April, Bethesda sends three teams to the
Junior Bible Quiz State Festival in Midland,
Michigan. Our most experienced team,
the Children of God will complete as our
League A representative; The Unstoppable
Bible Quizzers will be a force in League B
matches; and a combined group of Bethesda Bible Bees will bring their enthusiastic
best to League C. Be sure to pick up the
May issue of the Heartbeat of Bethesda for
all the results!
Naturally, the ability to buzz-in quickly during a JBQ match is an important ingredient
to success. However, because imparting
the Word of God is JBQ’s primary purpose,

details about the 2014-15 season. Get onthe-spot answers to questions about Bible
quizzing, and take home an information
packet containing JBQ guidelines, all of the
questions and answers, and even a sample
study guide. Then, as the summer gets
rolling, look for announcements regarding
JBQ registration in late August along with
the resumption of JBQ practices on September 7. Of course, Bethesda’s outstanding JBQ Coordinators, Matt and Katreece
McIntyre, are always pleased to receive
