The Gagauz people live mainly in south Moldova. There are also Gagauz populations in southern Ukraine,
Bulgaria, Romania and Russia. The Gagauz are one of the few Turkic peoples that are primarily Orthodox
Christian. There is no scholarly consensus about whether they were historically Orthodox Bulgars who adopted
the Turkish language or Turks who converted from Islam to Orthodoxy. The Gagauz language, which has been
greatly influenced by surrounding majority languages (Bulgarian, Romanian, Turkish, and Russian), is still
actively used in small towns and villages, where many Gagauz live in deep poverty.
The first New Testament in Gagauz was printed by IBT in 2006 and was eagerly received by many Gagauz
believers, but it was not approved by the Orthodox Church. In contrast, the IBT Children’s Bible (in both Cyrillic
and Roman scripts), which was published and presented to the local community in 2011, was highly appraised
by the Orthodox Church. At the request of the local Orthodox diocese, a new translator prepared the translation
of the Six Psalms, the unchangeable part of the Orthodox vesper service that is read aloud in church every
week. This booklet was published in 2012.

Although the majority of Gagauz are Orthodox Christians,
there is a general lack of Christian literature in Gagauz.
The first translations of Bible portions into Gagauz were

made by Orthodox priest Mikhail Chakir in the early 20
century. The Gospel Lectuary that he translated was
printed in 1911, the Gospel of Matthew in 1934 and the
Gospel of Mark in 1935. He also translated the Book of
Psalms for the Orthodox Church services. These texts
were all but forgotten in the Soviet era; in 1975, however,
IBT made a reprint of Matthew, and recently a new phase
of research and translation work has begun. Fr. Mikhail
Chakir’s authority among Gagauz Orthodox believers is
very high and his translations are eagerly awaited.
Gagauzi Gospel Lectuary
The IBT translation team has substantially revised the Gospel of Matthew in terms of

language and exegesis. The Gospel of Mark is being similarly revised now. The other two Gospels will be
produced on the basis of Fr. M. Chakir’s Lectuary. The next step on the way to producing appropriate
translations for Gagauz Orthodox believers is to revise and adapt Chakir's translation of Psalms. A new
exegetical advisor has recently joined the Gagauz project. He is an Orthodox monk from the USA who has
already learned the Gagauz language. He is coming to Moscow to start the IBT training program at the end of
February, and will then visit Moldova to get a month of personal exposure to the Gagauz culture and spoken
language. The adaptation of the Book of Psalms will be his further task.
