PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Building works update
Construction is now winding down for refurbishment of our R block portables. We anticipate the portables
component should be all done by the end of next week which will be ahead of schedule.
The major refurbishment of the Library is nearly completed.
Last week demolition of the old music practice room walls and the drama room wall were completed. The
old flooring has also been removed and construction phase will now begin.
To accommodate the refurbishment to the Administration area, various staff have been relocated.
The junior school office including the Years 7 to 9 coordinators has now been moved to R7.
Library staff will be in R7 until the start of term 4.
Debutante Ball
Organisation for the 2014 Year 11 Debutante Ball is well underway. Our couples have excelled in their
dance classes on Monday evenings and it is evident that they will put on a great show on 13 September.
Course Selections
Course selections for students undertaking Year 12 VCE 2015 were conducted on Friday 5 September. I
wish every student all the very best in their deliberations and goal setting for next year.
Ian Watkins
Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Maintenance works on our portables R1-10 is nearing an end. This process has taken 7 weeks and
involved replacing sections of roofing, spouting, eaves, carpets, painting and window repairs.
Works are continuing in the library and drama/music areas; and have just started in the administration area.
We have so far hired three shipping containers to hold furniture, books, shelving, etc., as areas have been
cleared for the workers to have access.
Students and staff are coping extremely well with being temporarily displaced.
By next Wednesday all portables should be back in full swing.
Parent teacher interviews will be held on September 18 (student free day however parents are encouraged
to bring their child to these interviews) in R Block and the Senior Study Centre. Check staff locations when
you book your interview times next week.
I will be travelling to China and Vietnam on a school marketing/promotion trip as well as catching up with a
number of parents of our current international students during the last week of this term. Our International
Student Director, Kate Grennan will also be in attendance. Highvale has traditionally been undertaking this
trip every two years over the past 10 years.
During the first week back next term our year 12 students will be involved in a full week of practice exams
(timetable included with this newsletter). Timetables are being finalised for the year 7-10 exams and year
11 exams.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Recently, our Year 12 Outdoor & Environmental Studies students had the opportunity of undertaking three
days of resort skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Hotham. Students enjoyed cold but sunny conditions with
wide spread snow at Victoria’s most popular Alpine Resort. They were treated to 95% of the mountain
being open and very good snow quality, which lead to some great experiences being had by the 18
students.
As has become expected of these students, they once again conducted themselves in an exceptional
manner and were able to directly compare their experiences to those they had whilst cross country skiing
on the neighbouring Mt. Stirling in Year 11.
Students were also treated to the experience of staying in lodge accommodation and helping with the
preparation of food. I would like to thank them very much for their assistance.
Many thanks go out to Mrs. Deidre Craig for her assistance on this camp and taking students on “First
Tracks” skiing and snowboarding.
Mr. Hayden Rowley
Outdoor & Physical Education Teacher
