There is growing concern about the negative environmental impacts of foam fire extinguishers as well as increasingly stringent regulations over the disposal of foam but the TITAN range of foam fire extinguishers comply with the environmental Milieukeur Standard. Some carbon dioxide models also offer the Milieukeur. With high fire ratings for Class A, B and F fires, TITAN wet chemical fire extinguishers are a must for any fire risk involving cooking oil or deep fat fryer fires. Available in 2ltr, 3ltr and 6ltr models, the extinguishers are also safe for inadvertent use on live electrical equipment up to 1000v at a distance of 1 metre. nt The TITAN foam fire extinguishers are also BS EN 3 Kitemarked, CE Approved and have passed the electrical conductivity test meaning that they are safe for inadvertent use on live electrical equipment up to 1,000 volts at a distance of 1 metre. What is Milieukeur? At the present time, there is no environmental standard against which foam fire extinguishers can be measured in the UK. However, in Holland, the Dutch have developed the Stichting Milieukeur Standard. The Milieukeur certification schemes are designed and administrated by the Dutch SMK (Stichting Milieukeur) and certification is carried out by independent certification bodies. Milieukeur certification schemes are accepted by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA). At the present time only carbon dioxide, foam and water with additive fire extinguishers can be considered for inclusion in the scheme. Environmentally friendly fire fighting foams? No company has yet developed a foam fire fighting solution that is truly environmentally friendly as all foams contain ingredients that may have potentially negative environmental impacts. However, the active foam agents used in the TITAN foam fire extinguishers are readily biodegradable meaning that they will biodegrade when they come into contact with the ground and they will not cause long term negative environmental impacts. They are therefore less harmful to the environment than standard fire fighting foams. How do fire extinguishers comply with Milieukeur ? The fire extinguishers are tested against a strict list of environmental criteria, namely: > > > > > > The halogenated hydrocarbons in the fluorosurfactants must not be volatile Portable fire extinguishers up to 20kg shall comply with EN 3.
