First Steps for Early Childhood and Teacher Education Majors
Understand the definition of service-learning in Early Childhood and Teacher Education
Service-learning combines academic instruction with meaningful service in the larger community.
Service-learning enhances what is taught by extending students learning beyond the classroom and
providing opportunities for students to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real life situations
in their communities, locally, nationally, and globally.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College values service-learning and requires it as part of every education
course. As a student of an EDU and/or EED course you will have the opportunity to serve your
community while learning about teaching through serving in a course specific classroom in a school in
the East Valley. The Early Childhood and Teacher Education Service-Learning Coordinator will place
you in a classroom for service-learning each semester. Please email Carrie Braaten

Obtain a fingerprint card
All Early Childhood and Teacher Education students must have an IVP fingerprint card. This card
says Level One at the top and has IVP ##### at the bottom of the card. Please see the list of agencies
on the back that will handle IVP fingerprinting. A list of agencies can also be found at
http://healthcare.maricopa.edu/pdfDocs/Fingerprint_Card_Vendors.pdf. It takes 6-8 weeks to receive your card so
get fingerprinted right away!
You will need:
 A cashier’s check or money order for $65 made out to AZ DPS
 The agency’s fee listed under the agency (on back)
 Acceptable ID: a driver’s license, state or government issued ID card (with photo and physical
description), or U.S. Passport (not a school ID )
Attend an orientation
The orientation will provide students with an overview of service-learning, an opportunity to ask
questions, and sign up for a service-learning placement. Attendance at an orientation is required.
Please mark your calendar for one of the following orientation options. No sign up required. All
orientations are held in the SC140’s.

Fingerprinting Resources
The following agencies offer the IVP fingerprinting that is required for all Early Childhood and Teacher
Education students. You will need a cashier's check/money order for $65, the agency’s fee that is listed
below and an ID (driver’s license, state/government issued identification or a U.S. Passport). All distances
are calculated from CGCC. The fingerprint card will be mailed to you in 6-8 weeks after fingerprinting.
