Robert Curtis – Officer in Charge Officer Klaus Stewen – Director of Operations 6/9/14 MPD – 13th Annual Junior Police Academy Mission Statement Mission Statement To enable dedicated youth to become self-assured, caring and disciplined adults in a challenging environment and to instill confidence and courage in the legal process and the officers sworn to serve and protect the community. Through classroom instruction, lecture, field trips and physical training, we will foster in each recruit the ability to approach police officers and nourish a friendship between the youth of the township and its Police Officers. Background The Junior Police Academy (JPA) is a two week long summer program dedicated to exposing the children of Mahwah to the rigors of becoming a real police officer. The academy is open to all Mahwah students that successfully complete the 5th grade DARE program this school year. The Junior Police Academy is designed to show students the training and preparation that goes into the making of a new Police Officer. The JPA provides participants with a challenging and meaningful adventure camp experience while building an understanding of policing techniques, police policy and procedure, leadership ethics, teamwork, and effective communication. Staff to student ratio Recruit health and safety is our primary concern. The staff are all qualified and trained Police Officers from the Mahwah Police Department providing each camper with a safe and rewarding experience. The Officer-to-Recruit ratio is 1:15 or better to ensure maximum supervision. Dates and Times This year the Junior Police Academy will be held from Monday, July 7th to Friday, July 18th. The Junior Police Academy will be held at the Ramapo Ridge Middle School (150 Ridge Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430) from approximately 8:30am – 3:00pm. Drop off will be in the parking lot of Ramapo Ridge closest to the South Entrance by the Tennis Courts (based upon weather conditions). Robert Curtis – Officer in Charge Officer Klaus Stewen – Director of Operations 6/9/14 MPD – 13th Annual Junior Police Academy Objectives Motto of the JPA “Respect, Discipline and Honesty” Objectives The objective of the Junior Academy is to promote an environment where the students learn the basic principles of respect, discipline, team work, motivation, and dedication to a “greater cause.” Each student will gain a comprehensive understanding of the laws that govern our country, and the legal processes that protects our citizens. “Working together toward one common goal,” is the theme of every academy day. The students will start the two weeks as 200+ individuals… and end the two weeks as one team. Sgt. Curtis MetLife Stadium East Rutherford, NJ Tour of MetLife Stadium to include: field access and instruction about large venue security measures. All Instructors Mountain Creek Water Park Vernon, NJ A day of fun and happiness at NJ’s premier water park. All Instructors Darlington County Park Water Safety Instruction Recruits will be given instruction on how to assist parties in danger of drowning without putting themselves at risk. Free Swim – All recruits will be monitored by county lifeguards, academy staff and parent chaperones at all times. Any student wishing to swim in deep water MUST meet the county’s rigorous swim test. Those who do not wish to go in deep water will remain in the shallow (fenced in) area of the lake. *** Any student who does not wish to participate in the swimming will be provided with alternative activities on dry land. Furthermore, to address the training involved and how an individual becomes a police officer. Methodology: Class discussion, student participation and instructor feedback. The class will establish how the discussion progresses. All students will effect the direction of the lesson plan by class participation. Conclusion: Each student will be able to identify the core curriculum of a real police academy, and the developmental process necessary for achieving success in policing. th Instructor Sgt.
