Language Courses
I have studied Japanese at High School. Do I have to start from 1032LAL
Introductory Japanese 1 at Griffith?
Students who studied Japanese throughout high school usually go in to 2040LAL Functional
Japanese 1 (10 credit points) or 2043LAL Functional Japanese 1 (Enhanced) (20 credit points).
Functional Japanese 1 (Enhanced) is recommended for students doing a full major or diploma in
Japanese.
In some cases, depending on your prior learning, you can commence at higher courses than the
Functional Japanese 1 level. Until the end of week 2, you are allowed to change your enrolment if
courses are not at the right level for you.
We suggest you enrol in either Functional Japanese 1 course. The textbook, Genki II, is in our library.
Have a look at it. You will get some idea about the level of the course.
I only know hiragana/katakana and some kanji. Which course should I enrol
in? (See below)
I picked up Japanese by watching Japanese drama and/or anime and have not
studied Japanese at school. Which course should I enrol in? (See below)
It has been a few years since I last studied Japanese at high school. I forgot
most of the things I studied. Can I enrol in Introductory Japanese 1?
If you have not studied Japanese formally, we recommend you start from Introductory Japanese 1.
Functional Japanese 1 courses requires basic Kanji. (I would say ... at least 100. Students study 160
kanji in Introductory Japanese 1 and 2. Then of course they forget some of them by the new
semester!. See Kanji list for Introductory Japanese 1 and 2 on page 3 of this document.
You are allowed to change the course by the end of Week 2. So you can sit in classes of both
Introductory Japanese 1 and Functional Japanese 1, and see which is more suitable for you. Then you
can switch your enrolment if necessary. However, if you do change courses, your timetable will
change and you might have to reschedule other courses as well.
The textbook for the Functional Japanese 1 courses, Genki II is in our library. Introductory Japanese
1 uses Genki I. Have a look at them. You will have some idea about the level of these courses.

It is advisable for Japanese major students to take a 20cp option as the 20cp course provides more
opportunity to improve reading and writing skills, which will help you to cope with higher level
courses.
Who should I contact when I want to discuss issues about exchange
programs?
If you are from the Gold Coast campus, contact the Gold Coast Japanese coordinator. If you are
