IMB NEWS September 2013—May, 2014 Department of Immunobiology Newsletter Departmental News You can’t be everywhere at once. Here is a quick recap of what’s been happening lately in the IMB Department. Prelim Milestone Success! We are so happy all three of the graduate students who took their prelim exams passed!! Congratulations to Christy Harrison—Kiela Lab, Matthew Bronnimann—Campos Lab and Shraddha Tuladhar—Koshy Lab! Donut Tuesday—Totally Awesome! Donut Tuesday has been a success ever since Dr. Koshy introduced all of us to the carb-loading, sugar rush of a good time! Check the IMB Social Calendar for the details on where Donut Tuesday will be held in the future. “Department of Immunobiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine is growing into a nationally and internationally recognized research and educational center.” Janko Nikolich-Žugich, M.D., Ph.D. Tea Time Department Head, Bowman Professor and Chair Department of Immunobiology The IMB department had its first “Tea Time” on Thursday, May 15th. Thank you to everyone who participated! We look forward to seeing you every Third Thursday of the month for some delicious tea and IMB camaraderie. Potluck A special thank you to Dr. Goodrum for hosting the April IMB Potluck. We appreciate her opening up her home to us! The next potluck will be in August. If there are any faculty members willing to host please contact Nicole. In This Issue Departmental News Changes in Faculty/Staff 2014 Symposium Department Outreach Grants Publications And More... The Symposium featured scientific talks by researchers in the fields of Immunology, Viral Pathogenesis, and Bacteriology Pathogenesis, as well as a poster session highlighting work in these, and related fields. Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows were invited to present posters. Each year, this event brings together researchers from across campus to present and discuss their latest findings and provide networking opportunities with other labs. The program was kicked-off with a brief welcome from IMB Department Head, Janko Nikolich-Žugich M.D., Ph.D., BIO5 Institute Director, Fernando Martinez, M.D., and CoM Deputy Dean for Research, Anne Cress, Ph.D. This year’s Symposium featured plenary addresses by: Michael Starnbach, Ph.D., Harvard Medical School Stanley Lemon, M.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Matthew Krummel, Ph.D., University of California San Francisco The Symposium was a huge success with more than 100 attendees. A big thank you to everyone on the Symposium Committee! We had great participation during Science City at the Festival of Books! Thanks everyone!! Frelinger Lab Updates In November 2014 Daniel Powell joined our lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He comes to us from the University of Maryland where he got his Ph.D. with Bob Ernst studying the effect of LPS on Francisella pathogenesis. Since joining the lab Daniel has been working on some Salmonella typhimurium projects and we are very happy to have him with us. At the end of May, two of our troops will be heading off to their next steps in life. Lydia Roberts has received a great position at National Institutes of Health Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Lydia received her Ph.D. with Jeff last June and has been working for him since 2009. During her time with him she has published four papers with two more still in the works studying the immune response to Francisella tularensis. In Montana, she will be working with Katy Bosio studying the immune response to virulent Francisella. Lydia has been a wonderful asset to the Frelinger lab and her presence will be greatly missed. We wish her nothing but the best in her future studies and hope she will be back to visit! Hannah Ledvina will be leaving us to attend graduate school at the University of Washington, pursuing her Ph.D. in microbiology. She has been the lab manager for the Frelinger lab for about a year and has been a great asset. Hannah received her BS in microbiology at the University of Arizona and did her undergraduate research with Dr. Viswanathan. We wish her the best of luck and want to remind her to always have an umbrella handy in Seattle! Deepa Jamwal celebrated her baby boys first birthday on April 22nd and he is happy and healthy! Adam Buntzman has done a wonderful job promoting science throughout our community. He recently headed a huge volunteer weekend for the department at the Tucson Festival of Books to which we brought the Science Bus! It was a huge success and a major hit of the festival. 3 Grants Dr. Samuel Campos, Assistant Professor: Awarded R01 Grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases: “Mechanisms of L2-Mediated Membrane Translocation of the Papillomaviral Genome” Period: 2014-2019 Dr. Felicia Goodrum, Associate Professor: Received a new grant from the Flinn Foundation.
