Extreme weather
er calamities like this are on the rise and are more likely as the earth’s oceans and
atmosphere warm due to human-induced
induced climate change
change. A host of Indian scientists put out a
warning recently, urging India to prepare for the growing impacts of climate change while
simultaneously reducing our carbon emissions.
The issue of global warming has drawn more attention in recent years due to rising sea levels,
glacier retreat, Arctic shrinking, and altered patterns of agriculture (National Geographic 2007).
Human
n activities add to global warming through carbon dioxide released by using coal, petroleum,
natural gas, and other sources to produce energy for human consumption (IPCC 2007). Global
warming has become an issue of concern because of its negative effects o
on the environment,
human health, and economic well-being
being of all the people of the world (U.S. EPA 2008). The
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has set the goal of reducing carbon dioxide to
350 ppm (parts per million) by 2025 (EEA 2008). Nat
Nations and the international community as a
whole are trying to bring the rate of increase in emissions of greenhouse gases under control, or to
mitigate the effects of such emissions through carbon capture and storage (sequestration)
technologies.
There is an urgent need not just for Govt. action but also for greater public discussion &
participation on this critical subject. The growing realisation of this fundamental truth is
generating a demand for all-out efforts towards environmental education, awar
awareness and
rejuvenation. Our Government has given top priority for environmental education involving all
groups of people, particularly students. As a result, the environment education has become a
compulsory subject in our Academic Institutions
titutions in all the states of India including West Bengal
from school level to the college level.
We need all of you to intervene and help people mak
make them understand the connection between
extreme weather events and Climate Change.
