Kurrajong-Bilpin Little Athletics Centre 2014-15 Summer Season “Family, Fun and Fitness” www.kblac.org.au Newsletter No. 1 – 19th September, 2014. Hello everyone and welcome to the first newsletter for the season. I would like to welcome all our returning athletes and their families; it’s great to see so many familiar faces coming back. I would like to also extend a special welcome to our new athletes and parents who have joined our club. A huge Thank you to everyone who was at our working bee on 24th August – your help was very much appreciated! While some of you were involved in winter sports, some of our athletes were kept busy with their athletics. Special mention to our athletes who made the trip to Dapto in July for the Little Athletics State Cross Country and Road Walk Championships. And also to Ian Dewhurst (Kurrajong training squad member and former KBLAC athlete) who competed in the 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth games! You can read all the winter event results further in this newsletter. Two weeks ago we held our Introduction night and again it proved to be a great success. Unfortunately our Tiny Tots program had to be cancelled due to rain, but our older athletes managed to get some events done between down pours. Very special thanks to Sara Klein (Hurdles, World Junior Games) and Kirsty Klein (Australian Race Walking medalist) for their instruction on the night, and also to Jye Hardy, Lauren Russell, Helen and Luke Zaurrini and Suzy and Tully Murphy. Last Friday was our first competition night and already we have had a record broken! The start of each season always brings challenges as we try to work out a weekly program that will suit the number of children in each age group. This can be a difficult task as athlete numbers in each group keep changing as we have more registrations. To help things move along we ask that any of last year’s patches please be removed from uniforms as this can be very confusing at the recording desk. I’d like to remind you that making Friday nights run smoothly for your child’s age group means your help is needed. Whether that is by place judging (for your child’s race), writing down the distances your child’s group achieves or picking up a rake or measuring tape - every bit of help is appreciated. Without your help, the nights run longer and it is harder for those that do help. A reminder, that all athletes are to have a Parent/Guardian present at all times. Any Athlete without a Parent present will sit at the Canteen until a parent arrives, therefor missing out on their events. For safety, please no “drop and run”. 2014/15 Committee Remember you will find all the information you need on our website, including a link to the results log in. We also have a Facebook page which is a closed group (to protect the children), as well as our newsletters, or you could just ask a committee member. Wet weather info will be posted on the website and Facebook page ASAP. Our Zone also now has a Facebook page, just search for Western Ranges Zone. I’d like to let everyone know that we run additional training days on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 4:30pm (it will be a later start when daylight savings starts). Training is not compulsory, but it is open to anyone in our club. Training is run voluntarily by our coach Marilyn Pearson with the help of Laurie Fairweather. Athletes are to be warmed up and stretched ready for a 4.30pm start. A reminder that training for jumps is by invite only. Finally, we are blessed with a beautiful park, please keep it that way by putting any rubbish in the bins provided. Little A’s will run as normal during the school holidays, we only break over Christmas. Canteen Roster Each week we require helpers in the Canteen and on the BBQ. Each age group will need to have parents available for a short period of time on the nights they are rostered on. Thank you to those who helped out last week and on our Introduction night. The Canteen roster is below. Week 1 – U6, U9, U12 Week 2 – U7, U10, U13 & 14 Week 3 – U8, U11, U15, 16 & 17 Uniform Fundraiser Do you hate sewing patches onto uniforms? If so, we have a fantastic fundraiser this year. Simply hand in your uniform and patches at the uniform desk, and for $10 we will have your patches sewn on and returned to you the following week. Joanne Cook is a professional dress and costume maker and has kindly agreed to do our sewing at a very reasonable rate. The more uniforms Joanne gets to sew, the more money she will give back to our club. Out of Bounds Please note there are several out of bounds areas to help keep the children safe. These include in the canteen and in the BBQ area. Also all children should be behind the discus cage at all times during discus events. There should also be no children on the high jump mat trolley. Please also encourage all children to check the track before crossing over. Note to Age Managers Thank you to all our Age Managers this season. Meegan Keller is our Age Managers coordinator so if you have any questions or concerns please let Meegan know. A reminder that all new records need to be verified and signed off by an official immediately or they will not stand as records. Also, if your age group is the last to use an area (high jump, long jump or shot put) please pack up the equipment. Rakes and shovels to be returned to the shed.
