Editors A Message from Commodore Ellen Gravina
O
ur high season is off to a great start! Flag Raising 2014 is in the history books—and what an event it was! With bright skies, warm sunshine, canons blasBng, Past Commodores raising the flags, 120 members in aFendance, and a wonderful recepBon hosted by VC Ken Lindahl and his wife, Maureen, this honored tradiBon opened the door for a fun-‐filled summer. Our Sailing InstrucBon program is thriving. Head instructor, Andrew DeRuvo, with his team of four instructors and seven apprenBces, are enthusiasBcally introducing new students to the sport of sailing, while extending the knowledge and skill set of our returning sailors. Wednesday evening races offer an opportunity to test what they’ve learned and to pracBce for the Friday GSYBYRA Junior RegaFas. Come down and watch the kids on Wednesdays and then join us for dinner. JYC chair, Rebecka Russo, and her volunteers do not disappoint on ‘no-‐cook Wednesdays!’ RegaFa chairs, Clarence O’Connor and Bill Wheeler, have the racing schedule underway. The heavy rains on July 4th postponed the Commodores’ Cup and Commodores’ Memorial Cup unBl Sunday of the holiday weekend. The 17+ knot winds added to the excitement. I took photos from Jerry Gravina’s Catamaran, Compass Rosie. (Perhaps with some persuasion, Rosie will compete next year!) Our InvitaBonal RegaFa is scheduled for August 8-‐9 – Clarence and Bill need your help. Please answer the call! Junior Race Week is around the corner. Our junior sailors will race down the Bay over four consecuBve days, ending each day with a race to the next host club. BSYC will welcome the racers at our Wednesday evening Family Night on July 23 as they sail their last race from Bayberry. We host the junior regaFa on Thursday, July 24th. Don’t miss it! Support our young sailors—the future of the BSYC! Mini-‐rendezvous are on the calendar each Tuesday evening. Bring your beverage of choice, an appeBzer, and relax with delighhul company. I’m very excited that BSYC’s membership is higher than it has been in years! But as such, the ‘seasoned’ members don’t know many of the newer faces, and vice versa. Let’s do something about that. I invite each of you reading this newsleFer (seasoned or new!) to approach someone you don’t recognize and introduce yourself. Our non-‐member offering for the Sailing InstrucBon program has resulted in many new members… and we want to retain them. Let’s put out the welcome mat and help the newer members navigate our club and feel comfortable. And new members: experience is the best teacher. Don’t hesitate to ask a seasoned member for guidance. We are here to help. And speaking of membership… Many of us have older children who have grown up in the Club and conBnue to be acBve. Once 21 years of age, a young adult should seek to establish themselves in BSYC with an Intermediate Membership. Intermediate Membership is open to your children between the ages of 21 and 26 and enBtles them to the faciliBes of the Club. Aler the age of 26, if they are using the Club, they must seek regular membership. For more informaBon, contact Membership chairs, Barbara & Charlie Becker. The summer of 2014 conBnues. It is a short season–there is no need to wait for a scheduled event–just come down and enjoy your Club! See you soon! -‐Ellen Gravina

Applications are available on the BSYC website.
A member may be a sponsor or seconder 2 times per calendar year.
A brief letter must accompany the application. It should state how long you’ve known the candidate as
well as how you perceive they will involve themselves in our Club’s activities.
A new member may not be a sponsor until after their first two years of membership.
If you need more information, please contact us or any member of the Membership Committee.

GUESTS AT THE BSYC………. from the Membership Committee
Guests are always welcome at our Club, and we all enjoy meeting new people. We now have self adhesive
name tags so our guests can be recognized and greeted properly. Please have them complete one and
wear it. These tags will be located at the top of the name tag tower.
As a friendly reminder, guests are permitted to attend Club functions two (2) times per year unless they are
actively pursuing a membership. In this case, several visits would be permitted. According to our General
Guidelines and Policies “the same person shall not be a guest, either of the same member or different
members, at more than two functions during one year.” Also from the Guidelines, “unmarried members are
permitted to bring a companion on an unlimited basis.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE CLUB .......
Update for the Bay Shore Pump Out--June 2014
The Bay Shore pump out location has moved. The new location is
further north on the east side of the Maple Avenue parking lot—just
to the left of the old “Beefsteak Charlie's” restaurant which has been
closed and deteriorating for years. It is pretty much up in a corner
but you don’t have to go right up to it since it does have a long hose.
We were there mid tide (right next to it) and had over 5 feet of
water. It is a broadside tie up to poles-no cleats. Fenders would have
to be larger than the pole diameters or lean against the poles.
Be aware that if you go there early in the morning, it is just north of
where the Fire Island Ferries freight boats load from the Maple
Avenue dock.
Approaching from the entrance into the Bay Shore Marina, keep
heading north and slightly west towards the large corner—left of the
boarded restaurant.
Happy pumping!
Charlie Becker
