GENERAL SCHOOL NEWS
VALEDICTION
On Thursday 16 October the school hosted the annual Valediction ceremony for the Matric
Class of 2014. This year our guest speaker was Ms Minnette Dempsey who is a teacher and
guide of human potential development. Her words inspired not only the matriculants, but also
the parents and educators.
In the Headmistress’s valediction, Mrs Cereseto emphasized the importance of building
character, instead of developing a persona. Furthermore she spoke to the girls about the
company they kept. She reminded them that there were no “princes” coming to rescue them,
and that they were responsible for creating their own success, choosing the right companions,
developing character, not a persona and focusing one’s full attention on the task at hand and
working goals.

The 2014 Soccer season has come to an end with great successes to be
celebrated by both teams. We entered two leagues this year: the Johannesburg
Central Schools’ League and the Janine Van Wyk Developmental League. The
Junior team won the cup for Johannesburg League and were runners up in the
JVW League and the Seniors won the Johannesburg League and made it to the
quarter finals of the JVW League. Congratulations to Alia Ismail and Nomonde Mtetwa who
both received Full Colours this year. Well done to all the girls for their passion and dedication!

The results are as follows:
Dainfern 5 – 3 Parktown
Durban Girls 15 – 0 Parktown
St Anne’s 13 – 0 Parktown
Roedean 15 – 0 Parktown
Eastern Gauteng Invitational 13 – 0 Parktown

In addition, Natasha Gertzen (Grade 9) won Most Valued Player versus St Anne’s and

Congratulations to all of these girls and thank you to the parents who were there to support
and lift them. We look forward to a great season next year.
The Question of Trust
One of our House Heads sent a few girls to me to discuss the question of honesty. I had to think
about that one carefully before I discussed this with them. It has so many different meanings.
Just go and google it and see! One particular explanation struck me and that refers to the belief
that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, and a few other commendable
things.
I believe that trust is a value (emotion?) that seems to be a given when you are born. You trust
that you will be kept safe and that there is someone to keep you safe – just as an example. It is
there from the start. It is automatic. In line with that, as another example, is the fact that parents
automatically trust their babies, because the little ones do not have the capacity yet to disappoint
that.
Trust, like good health, good fortune, good relationships with family and friends, security and
many other things, is one of the privileges that life presents to us. If we are trusted, we know
that we belong, that we are being understood and respected. We are seen, in the eyes of our
community, as persons with integrity and strength of character.
However, we are not born perfect and the time comes for every one of us to break that trust –
never openly. Oh, no. We always hope that we will never, ever be found out, because look at
what we will lose:
 Face – we become a stranger to those who believed that we were good
 Undamaged, trusting relationships
 The sense that we belong in or to a circle (family or friends) who are trustworthy and who
trust us back
 Close, loved people who know what to expect of us
 Important people who respect us
 People who understand us and support us without hesitation, because they believe in us
It is quite devastating to consider that and still we allow ourselves to give in to the temptation of
possible self-advantage; even allowing ourselves to award that possibility a higher priority than
the prospect of losing some or all of the above.
But, oh, oh, the consequences when exposed! Why is it so painful, embarrassing, intimidating
and hurting us in so many ways? Because it signals clearly to the world around us that our selfesteem, self-confidence, self-respect and self-trust is just sooo low. We have dropped in our
social status. We are now ranking amongst the lower echelons of the small community to which
we belong and everybody knows about our downfall.
So, how does one go about restoring that damage? What restorative actions and strategies to
apply?
 One might start with owning up, facing the judges, showing courage, conquering the fear
of seeing the disapproval of you in their eyes and dealing with the consequences in an
honourable way.
 Show that you still have character and that you are willing to make amends and pay your
dues.
 Then look inside you and understand why you need to change quickly in order to adapt
and adjust for the sake of your own, but also for the greater good of the society that
needs to support and love you too.
