Wewritetobringyouanupdateoncurriculumrenewaloverthepasttwomonths.Wehave
continuedtofocuseffortsonidentifyingandworkingonwhatismostcriticalandessentialfora
successfulstarttothenewcurriculum.Sinceourlastupdate,thishasincludedworkingtoobtain
thenecessaryapprovalsfromtheUniversityofWashingtonforthenewcurriculumstructure,
buildingtheFoundationPhasecontent,andestablishingworkgroupstobeginplanning
foundationalclinicalexperiencesandothercurricularcomponents.Asummaryofcontinuingand
newworkisprovidedbelow.
Ongoingactivitiesrelatedtocurriculumrenewal:
 Curriculum Committee selection:WiththehelpofWylieBurkeandtheCurriculum
RenewalGovernanceCommittee,anapproachtoselectingthefoundingCurriculum
Committeehasbeendevelopedandisbeingimplemented.Wewillconveneanew5‐6
personnominatingcommitteethatwilldevelopaslateofcandidatesconsistingof
clinicians,scientists,andregionalfaculty.Thisnewnominatingcommitteewillbe
selectedfromourcurrentSchoolofMedicineOversightCommittee.Wewillinvite
allUWSOMfacultywithregularorclinicalfacultystatus(assistantprofessororabove)
throughouttheregionwhoareinterestedinservingontheCurriculumCommitteeto
submittheirnamestotheirdepartmentchairorregionaldean.Thenominating
committeewillreviewallnamesandprepareaslateofcandidatestobevotedonbythe
entirefacultyregion‐wideinaccordancewiththecategoriesdevelopedbythe
GovernanceCommittee.ThegoalistohavetheCurriculumCommitteeinplacebylate
October.
 Anatomy in Seattle: Becauseofresourceconstraints(i.e.,facultyavailabletoinstruct,
competitionforspaceandcadaversinSeattle),asmallgroup(JohnClark,MichaelRyan,
MarkWhipple,SherilynSmith,GauthamReddy,HughFoy)metanumberoftimesto
discusshowbesttoofferanatomydissectioninSeattle.Theplanthatwasdeveloped
willprovideanatomydissectionofthechestandabdomenintheCirculatoryblockin
January,andheadandneckandbraindissectionintheMind,BrainandBehaviorblock
inautumnofthethirdterm.ThegoalistoalignascloselyaspossiblewiththeWWAMI
regionalsites,asoriginallysetforthintheplanfortheFoundationsCurriculum.Inline
withrequestsfromanumberoffaculty,musculoskeletaldissection,whichwas
scheduledforearlyinthecurriculum,willbemovedtolaterinthecurriculum.John
ClarkwilloverseetheSeattlesectionandCassieCusickatMontanaStateUniversityand
DaveConleyatWashingtonStateUniversitywilloverseetheregionalsections.
Assessmentsandgradingwillbethesameacrossallsites.


LCME approval:TheLCMEasksmedicalschoolsplanningmajorcurriculumrevisions
andchangesinclasssizetosubmittheirplanslonginadvanceofthechanges.Ellen
CosgroveistakingtheleadonworkingwiththeLCMEtoensuretheneededapprovalto
moveforward.
Anumberof work groups and committeesaremeetingtoplanimplementationofthe
curriculum:
o ACourse Approval Work Group, ledbyCarolMacLaren,metwithrepresentatives
fromtheUWProvostOfficeregardingcampusapprovalfortimingofthecurriculum
andcredits.ApprovalwasrecentlygrantedtobegininstructiononSeptember8,
2015(theTuesdayafterLaborDay).DuetochallengesbetweentheUWschedule
andtheUWSOMschedulethatpotentiallyaffectedtheUW’sstudentfinancialaid
program,thelengthsofsomeblocksandintersessionsweremodified.Theattached
schematicshowstherevisedschedule.
o TheAssessment Committeeisworkingtoplancommonassessment
methodologiesandlogistics.MembersoftheAssessmentCommitteeare:SaraKim,

presentedthesetotheentiregroup,anddiscussedspecifictopicareaswithinblocks
andthreads.Thesessionwascollegialandinteractive,demonstratingthevalueof
integrationforfullunderstandingbyfacultyoftheirowncoursesinrelationshipto
othercourses.AthirdretreatwilloccurSeptember24.Seetheattachedlistofthe
FoundationPhaseblockandscientificthreadleaders.

Aspartofthiswork,representativesfromAMBiTaremeetingwithcurriculum
renewalstakeholdergroupsinSeptember.
Newactivitiesoroutcomes:

Initialcoursedescriptions(thatwillchangeasthecoursesaremorefullydeveloped)have
beensenttotheregionalsitestoestablishnewcourseprefixes,numbersandcreditsatthe
partneruniversities.






Theclinicalimmersionatthestartofthecurriculumwillbetwoweeksinlengthforthefirst
yearofthenewcurriculumandwilloccurpriortotheFoundationsPhaseateachregional
site.Theimmersionwillbecombinedwithorientationactivities.Thegoalistoprepare
studentsforthestartoftheirintroductoryprimaryandcontinuitycareclerkshipthatwill
runthroughoutthefirst18months.Someregionalsitesareplanningasomewhatlonger
clinicalimmersionthantwoweeks.
WyomingwillparticipateintheFoundationPhaseinthefirst12monthsoftheinitial18‐
monthperiodandwillshifttofull18‐monthparticipationinWyomingoncespaceis
available.The20WyomingstudentswhoentertheUWSchoolofMedicinein2015will
returntoSeattleinAugust,2016tocompletethelastsixmonthsoftheFoundationsPhase
curriculum.
AnOrientation Work GroupwillbechargedinOctobertostreamlineorientation.Anne
Eackerwillleadthisgroup.
ATransitions to Clerkships Work GroupwillbechargedinSeptembertoplanthethree‐
monthblockdevotedtopreparingforclerkshipsandcompletingscholarshipactivities.
ErikaGoldsteinwillleadthisgroup.
Theleadersofthethemeswillbechargedinthenextmonthtoincorporatethesemajor
themes(e.g.,lifelonglearning,diversity,healthequity)intothefour‐yearcurriculum
DiscussionshavebeenoccurringwiththeSchool of Dentistrytoassesswhetherandto
whatextentdentalstudentswillutilizethenewmedicalschoolcurriculum.Ataskforceof
individualsfromthemedicalanddentalschoolswillbeformedinthenearfuturetofurther
assessthepossibleinvolvementoftheSchoolofDentistryinthecurriculum.Bruce
Silversteinisservingasacontactbetweenthetwoschoolsoncurriculumrenewalandthe
dentalschool’sinvolvement.

wehavemetonaregularbasisaskeyadvisors.Theseindividualshavebeenindispensablein

implementationofthecurriculuminfall2015.Whilemanyadditionalelementsweredecidedupon
inthelastphaseofcurriculumrenewal,somewillbephasedinovertimeonceweknowthatthe
mostessentialpartsofthecurriculumareinplaceandmovingforward.
