gastroenterology and hepatology,
Professor Quak developed the full
set of paediatric gastrointestinal and
hepatology services at the NUH from its
inception in 1985. Having trained several
overseas fellows in his subspecialty and
built a strong team of specialists, he is
also involved in curriculum reformation,
playing an integral role in the career
development of paediatric trainees.
T
he NUH won three individual
awards and one team award at
the National Medical Excellence
Awards (NMEA) 2014. The NMEA is the
only award presented by the Ministry of
Health (MOH) to recognise contributions
from health professionals for innovations
in healthcare, patient safety, clinical
quality, biomedical research, as well as
training and education of clinicians. The
recipients from the NUH are:
National Outstanding Clinician Award
Professor Wong Peng Cheang
A highly regarded pioneer in the fields
of infertility and assisted reproduction
in Singapore, Professor Wong heads the
Division of Reproductive Endocrinology
& Infertility, and is the founder and
current Director of the NUH’s Centre
for Reproductive Education and
Specialist Training (CREST), the first
specialised training centre for assisted
reproduction in Asia Pacific set up in
2011. His illustrious career spans over
three decades, with a milestone in
1983 when he was part of the team
that brought about Singapore’s first
in-vitro fertilisation baby. The team was
conferred the National Science and
Technology Award for the achievement
in 1988. Last year, Professor Wong

Fertility Societies for his contribution to
reproductive medicine.
National Outstanding Clinician
Scientist Award Associate Professor
Allen Yeoh Eng Juh
A prolific clinician-scientist, innovator
and author of over 50 papers in leading
international medical and scientific
journals, A/Prof Yeoh is widely cited for
his work in paediatric leukaemia, and
National Clinical Excellence Team Award
The NUH team, headed by Associate
Professor Malcolm Mahadevan, includes
Dr Kuan Win Sen, Professor Lim Tow
Keang and Dr Lim Hui Fang. They are
recognised for their work in Severe
Community-Acquired Pneumonia
(SCAP), a common and potentially fatal
condition. In 2008, the team embarked
on a quality improvement project to
develop a multidisciplinary programme
that improved pre-ICU resuscitation and
reduced hospital mortality for SCAP
patients from 23.8 per cent to 5.7 per
cent. The team also developed and
implemented a multifaceted workflow
that standardised and optimised the
management of SCAP patients in the
emergency department. Their efforts
reduced ICU admission rates and length
of stay in the hospital, which translated
into significant savings in hospital bills
for patients. Margaret Lee
