Roquette is an international group
whose capital is 100% family-owned.
The stability of the family shareholder-base
and the independence of the group have
contributed to its success.
In 1933, the Roquette brothers, Dominique
and Germain, decided to build a potato
starch plant in Lestrem, France.
In the 1940s, they diversified their activity to
include corn starch.
As of the 1950s, they began investing in the
development of a range of Polyols
(such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol) and,
in the 1980s, they launched the production
of wheat starch.
In 2005, peas were added to the list
of raw materials, and since 2008
the Roquette Group has been strongly
involved in the microalgae sector.

of revenue per year reinvested
in industrial capital and R&D
Simultaneously, the Group has developed its
international presence.
The expansion began in the 1960s in Europe,
continuing in the 1980s and ‘90s in the USA,
and then as of the year 2000 in Asia.
In 2012, Roquette acquired three starch
plants in India, thus becoming the leader
in this fast-growing market.
Each year, more than 10% of revenue
is reinvested in the Group’s industrial capital
and in the research and development
to develop new products and new processes.
In its 80 years of existence, the Roquette
Group has become a strategic supplier
in markets for Food, Nutrition and Health,
as well as Plant-based Chemistry.
It is ranked No. 2 in Europe, No. 1 in France
and India, and No. 5 in the world-wide
starch industry.
And tomorrow? Thanks to the strong
attachment of its family shareholders and the
professional commitment of the men
and women who make up the company,
the Roquette Group will continue to strengthen
its activity and remain open to industrial
and commercial opportunities that will allow it
to continue its development on a global scale.
Since its creation, the Roquette Group has
benefited from the professional commitment
and attachment of its employees for its
success and development. The company
culture is strongly marked by this human

The Roquette Group’s strategy of innovation
is based around two main sectors for the design
of new products and solutions derived from plant-based
resources: Food-Nutrition-Health and Plant-based Chemistry.
> Food,
Nutrition and Health
Food, Nutrition and Health have become
a priority for consumers, public authorities
and the industrial sector.
The Roquette Group has integrated them
into its strategy for many years. Roquette
develops and brings to market nutritional,
functional and innovative ingredients
in order to meet the needs of consumers
and anticipate the expectations of markets.
The Group offers ingredients in the
domains of growth and well-being, oral-dental
hygiene, balanced nutrition, satiety and
the prevention of obesity and diabetes.
From infants to senior citizens, from pregnant
women to athletes, everybody can benefit
from these ingredients.
> 14
Beyond food and nutrition, the Roquette Group
has invested in health. It has become a major
supplier of excipients and active ingredients
used in the composition of pharmaceuticals.
The excipients produced by Roquette cover
a large range of pharmaceutical applications,
notably oral solids (pills, tablets, capsules),
oral liquids (syrups) and innovative delivery
systems (time-release pills). Roquette is also
a leader in injectable products. It fully complies
with all European and international
pharmacological regulations.
Beyond simple ingredients and excipients,
the Roquette Group provides complete
solutions that meet the customer needs,
thanks to its Application Development Centers
and its dedicated multi-disciplinary teams.

ORAL-DENTAL
HEALTH:
Offering the best
of nature
>
Concerned for the health and well-being of consumers,
Roquette studies the nutritional properties of its ingredients
in different domains, including oral-dental health.
Thus the non-cariogenic properties of polyols contained
in chewing-gum help prevent cavities.
Dental cavities are the most common
oral-dental affliction and are considered
a major public health issue. According
to the World Health Organization (WHO),
60 to 90% of school children in the world
have cavities.
Dental plaque, a sticky bacteria film,
can form on teeth after each meal.
These micro-organisms feed on fermentable
sugars, producing acids that can attack tooth
enamel. If the pH of the dental plaque drops
below 5.7, the enamel begins to demineralize.
This is the first stage of tooth decay.
Because they are not metabolized by
the bacteria in the mouth, sorbitol, maltitol,
mannitol and xylitol are non-acidogenic and
therefore non-cariogenic.
Polyols are natural carbohydrates. They are
sugars derived from the transformation
of wheat or corn starch.
Polyols have a low caloric value (2.4 kcal/g
in Europe) or 40% less than sugar, and their
glycemic index is also lower.
>
Polyols and Roquette:
an historic relation
Roquette benefits from long experience
in polyols. Roquette was a pioneer
in the industrial development of sorbitol.
Sorbitol was the first polyol to be marketed by
the Group, some 60 years ago. Maltitol, maltitol
syrup, mannitol and xylitol were later added to the range.
Roquette’s research on the properties of polyols has
helped in the development and success of sugarless
chewing-gum. Today, two out of three sugarless
chewing-gums consumed in the world are made
with SweetPearl®, a maltitol from Roquette.
This starch derivative improves the flavor, texture,
freshness and appearance of chewing-gum.

ANIMAL NUTRITION:
Offering the best
of nature
Roquette invests in the animal nutrition sector.
Certain ingredients developed from plant-based raw materials
are used by manufacturers of feed for livestock and pets.
Offering its customers more than 60 products,
or 2.5 million tons per year, Roquette gets 20%
of its revenue from the animal nutrition sector.
>
The applications of animal nutrition:
Aquaculture feed
Pet food
Animal feed
Special feed: feed for nursing.
Wheat is the only cereal whose protein,
gluten, once rehydrated, can bind and form
a visco-elastic network.
This function is particularly appreciated in food
applications, especially for baking. This protein
additive can also be found in other applications,
such as animal nutrition: pets, aquatic species, etc.
>
An example:
salmon feed
Aquaculture faces major economic
and environmental challenges: reduced
availability of fish oil and fish meal, desire to
promote sustainable production, pollution from
salmon feed. To respond to these challenges,
Roquette provides a solution with wheat gluten,
a plant-based alternative protein to flours of animal origin.
By extracting the protein fraction from wheat, Roquette
provides aquaculture a plant-based protein derived
from renewable raw materials. This highly digestible
protein source helps in the near-total assimilation
of the protein fraction, thereby reducing wastes
from salmon feed.

customers, not only to optimize their finished
products, but also to rationalize the use
of energy and the raw materials necessary
for the production of paper. Its extensive range
of starch-based products, used at key
moments of the manufacturing process,
helps reduce the consumption of starch
and energy.
In the paper industry, starch also provides many
other functions, acting as a binder, thickener,
adhesive, plastifier, moistener or stabilizing
agent for humidity and retention, as well
as a filmogenic agent. Starch is used to coat
papers, to glue layers of paper together
750,000 tons of corn iis usedd
each year in the paper industry.
Some 20 to 30 kg of starch
is used per ton of paper.
to improve consistency, to produce glues
for cardboard, etc.
Roquette improves the dry materials used
in the surfacing of paper, which in turn helps
reduce energy expenditures related to
the manufacturing process.
Thanks to corn and wheat starch, paper manufacturers have replaced up to 60% of petroleum-based
latex with a sustainable biosourced alternative.
This latex was traditionally used in the layering
of paper and cardboard.
