Composition: A blend of HFC refrigerants R-32, R-125, R-134a and
hydrocarbons R-600 and R-601a (8.5 / 45 / 44.2 / 1.7 / 0.6 wt%)
Application: R-438A is intended to replace R-22 in existing direct
expansion systems where the expansion device capacity is very closely
matched to the system capacity (predominantly water chillers).
Performance: In most cases R-438A provides similar cooling capacity
and energy efficiency to R-22 while operating at significantly lower
compressor discharge temperature but actual performance depends on
system design and operating conditions.
Lubricant: The hydrocarbon component in R-438A helps promote oil
return in systems containing mineral oil or alkylbenzene. Although HFC
refrigerants won’t mix with these oils, the hydrocarbon addition thins the
oil and keeps it moving around the loop. More complicated piping
arrangements or large hold-up volumes may still require some oil be
changed to POE.
