P.A.R.T.Y. Program
On April 10th , 35 senior
St. Ignatius students
volunteered to attend the
P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent
Alcohol and Risk Related
Trauma in Youth)
Program at Thunder Bay
Regional Health
Sciences Centre. This
program introduced
students to health care
providers, EMS, and
Police providers. The
one day field trip
identified potentially
dangerous situations and
behaviors through
personal testimony,
multimedia
presentations and
active participation.
The P.A.R.T.Y.
Program also exposed
students to potential
psychological and
physical impacts that
result from traumatic
injury, using reality
education. Students
who attended the
P.A.R.T.Y. Program
were asked to fill out
two short surveys about
risk taking: one before
the session and one in
May after the session.

MY EXCITING EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE:
by Krysta Veneruz (Gr. 11 St. Ignatius Student)
The 2013-2014 school year
was, without a doubt, the best
year of my life! This year, I
participated in the Canadian
Education Exchange
Foundation’s (C.E.E.F.)
program and went to France.
My family hosted a French
girl, named Junie, from
August to November, 2013.
While it was quite intimidating
for her to move into a new
environment with people she
had just met, she adapted
very quickly. She learned to
speak English better each
day, went to school with me
and tried different activities.
She experienced so many
new things, like: fishing,
watersports, football, hockey,
school dances, Thanksgiving
and Hallowe’en. She also fell
in love with Reese’s Peanut
Butter Cups and Rice Krispie
squares! By the end of her
three months, she had made
many friends and
unforgettable memories. She
ended up being my best
friend and it was so sad to
see her leave.
Three short months later, it
was my turn to get on a
plane, to live with Junie’s
family in France from
February until May, 2014. My
experience was life-changing!
Just as Junie did here, in
France I travelled, learned so
many life lessons and had
many new experiences. I
tried rugby, rock-climbing,
farming, handball and French
cooking. I met a lot of other
exchange students from
different parts of the world, and
was able to see some beautiful
sights in France. Oh – and my
French greatly improved too!
My three months in France
went by in the blink of an eye,
and one of the hardest
moments of my life was saying
goodbye at the train station.
I’m so happy that I was able to
participate in C.E.E.F.’s
exchange program. It
definitely changed my life in
such a positive way, and I now
have a best friend across the
world. I encourage anyone
with an interest in travel to
consider this amazing
opportunity, because I promise
that – hands down – it will be
the best year you ever have!

OFSAA Trysport Day
During April, St.
Ignatius held a
tournament to
introduce students to
the new sport
floorball! OFSAA
donated $700 to our
school in order to
purchase new sticks
for the students to
use. Over 180
students partook in
learning and playing
this awesome game!
Katelyn Burton, a
grade 10 student at
the school was
introduced to floorball
through her physical
education class and
has now made it onto
the Canadian
Women's National
Team.
Thank you to National
team coach Stefani
Koo for helping our
student athletes
experience the game!
And thank you to the

Class for organizing
this fun, fitness
activity!

Science Day at St. Ignatius
In May, the Senior
Kindergarten class
from St. Francis
travelled to St.
Ignatius where they
got their hands dirty
doing some fun
science activities.
Senior science
students helped the
Senior Kindergarten
students as they
navigated through
several stations and
explored the magic
that is science.
The experience was
beneficial for both the
SK students and the
senior science
students here at St.
Ignatius. There is a
lot to be said about a
student who can
explain science
concepts to a young
budding scientist
without using words
like molecules or
particles.
A great time was
enjoyed by all!

JUNO 2014 PILGRIMAGE:
by Victoria Richard (Gr. 11 St. Ignatius Student)
This June 6th marks the 70th
Anniversary of the D-Day
Landings. To commemorate
this important event students
and teachers from St. Ignatius
and St. Patrick embarked on
the 2014 Juno Remembrance
Tour. This journey was our
way of saying thank you to
those who fought in both wars.
Participants departed with the
intent to further their
appreciation of history and the
sacrifices made by the soldiers
of both world wars. In
preparation for this journey
we researched soldiers buried
at the Commonwealth War
Cemeteries, as well as those
remembered at Canadian
National Vimy Memorial. At
each monument, museum,
cemetery, and battlefield we
established connections and
deepened our gratitude for all
the sacrifices made by our
troops. As part of this
experience, we were invited
the town of Crepon a small
French community liberated
by the Allies in 1944. The
mayor gave us a personal
walking tour of his town and
then we shared in the
specialty of the Calvados
region, apple juice. This once
in a lifetime opportunity has
unified past and present
generations and has inspired
many of us to pursue further
education in history. Perhaps
the most moving moment
though was walking the
beaches of Bernieres sur Mer,
Juno Beach, where the
Canadians landed on June 6,
1944. How could we not be
moved by knowing that 70
years ago, men, some no older
than we are now, put their
lives on the line to make a
better future for the world?
Throughout the Juno
remembrance tour we shared
part of our lives with the fallen
soldiers, and current residents
of the areas. I am confident
that I speak for all participants
when I say that this journey
was a chance of a lifetime
experience that has made me a
prouder Canadian citizen.

STUDENTS RECEIVE EARLY ACCEPTANCES TO COLLEGE!
This year,
Confederation
College piloted a new

their choice (some
restrictions applied)
as well as a $1000
bursary toward their
future college
education. The
students, along with
guidance counsellor
Mrs. Advent, attended
a reception on
May 23 to formally
receive their awards.
We would like to
congratulate
Stephanie Borton,
Jacob Davenport,
Shawna Heyder,
Cosimo Pasqualino
