Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage site.
In the afternoon yet another CLOUDSANDSEA Exclusive: A Kyo Yuzen Dyeing
experience with luncheon
Kyo-Yuzen, a technique of painting dye directly onto cloth, was invented in the middle of
the Edo era, towards the end of the 17th century. It has since become the ultimate art of
kimono dyeing, famous for its use of distinctive and vivid colors seen nowhere else in the
world.
* This is followed by a CLOUDSANDSEA Special programme an Afternoon tea and
show-and-tell with local quilting expert Keiko Takahashi KEIKO TAKAHASHI ~
They will be looking forward to seeing some of our quilting, so be sure to bring a small
sample of your work to show and pictures of any of your quilts that would be too large to
bring along. Meeting with local people is always a highlight of any tour and the
opportunity to meet Keiko and see her magnificent work is always an added bonus on
our quilting tours! A small gift exchange will take place with Keiko's students.
Keiko is one of the few contemporary quiltmakers in Japan. She established her Kyoto
quilt school in 1979, followed by other schools in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe. Her quilts
have been awarded at the International Quilt Exhibition (‘92) and the Quilt Expo IV
(‘94). In addition to being chosen as one of the 100 leading quilters in the world by the
Japan Handicraft Instructors’ Association, Keiko has juried and judged at major Japanese
quilting shows

•Walking tour of Arashiyama : (Arashiyama (嵐山) is a pleasant, touristy district in the
western outskirts of Kyoto. The area has been a popular destination since the Heian
Period (794-1185), when nobles would enjoy its natural setting. Arashiyama is
particularly popular during the cherry blossom and fall color seasons)
* Nijo Castle : (It is one of the seventeen assets of Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto
which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.)

enjoy hands-on experience workshop of Shibori and visit
exhibition of history of Shibori. (what exactly is shibori? Usually
referred to as simply “Japanese tie-dye”, it is a form of resistdyeing where fabric is folded, tied, twisted or wrapped to create
patterns. Traditional indigo blue and white is probably the most
well-known version of shibori,)
