PE-RT Pipes in Heating & Plumbing Installations in Europe
 PE-RT pipes, underfloor heating systems
PE-RT in underfloor heating systems is a success story! Since 30 Years PE-RT pipes are
continously growing in Europe. In our recently published KWD Market + Charts “Heating &
Plumbing Pipes Europe” we have – amongst others - a look on the consumption of PE-RT
pipes in the period 2010 to 2016.
KWD-globalpipe, 06.02.2014. The development of the material PE-RT (Polyethylene of raised temperature) for pipes in underfloor heating systems but also for radiator connections as well as for
sanitary systems / hot and cold water installation was mainly driven by DOW. Today there are other
providers for PE-RT but Dow is still the market leader in Europe. Already in 2007 Wolfgang Quack,
the developer of PE-RT, and HPG/Germany, the first producer of PE-RT pipes, could celebrate the
25th anniversary of PE-RT pipes. PE-RT is used for full plastic pipes as well as for aluminium multi
layer pipes. Today we find producers of PE-RT pipes worldwide and it is used worldwide in heating &
plumbing applications. PE-RT is used for full plastic pipes as well as for aluminium multi layer pipes.
Let´s just have a look on the full plastic pipes:
According to our in December 2013 published report, KWD Market + Charts “Heating & Plumbing
Pipes 2013”, the main application for full plastic PERT pipes are underfloor heating systems. If we have
a look on the countries where PE-RT pipes are used
most, it is very clear Germany. The reason is not
only that it has been developed in Germany but this
is the country with the biggest surface of underfloor
heating systems. About 70% of new built single
family houses are built with underfloor heating systems.
A look in the future shows that PE-RT pipes will
grow further, but it slows down.

Related to the main use of PE-RT
full plastic pipes in underfloor
heating systems, PE-RT pipes are
growing mainly in those countries
where this kind of heating system is
successful.
PE-RT in aluminium multi layer
pipes is very successful too. In
our KWD market report “Aluminium
Multi Layer Pipes 2013” we showed,
that there is still an enormous
growth in the production of those
pipes worldwide. We find growing
markets in and also outside Europe.

SILON/CZE presented successful innovative crosslinking for PE-Xb pipes at K 2013
 Crosslinking for PE-Xb pipes
The K 2013 Trade Fair was a great success for SILON and is a major step towards a new
future. This year SILON focused on presenting its innovative technology for manufacturing
pipes and cables from our PE-Xb material (crosslinkable PE).
KWD-globalpipe, 06.02.2014. The new technology concerns the final process of
treatment and cross-linking of manufactured pipes and cables by thermal treatment of the finished product in a special thermal treatment chamber.
As a major producer of polymer compounds, SILON is a traditional exhibitor at this trade fair. The
stand was visited by a large number of potential clients and business partners. Attendance at the
trade fair significantly exceeded attendance in 2010.

February 06, 2014
Most visitors expressed great interest in SILON’s business partner’s (the De Lama Company)
sterilization equipment intended for crosslinking PE-Xb piping, which
was part of the display. (For more information please see KWDglobalpipe no. 484 “Silon presents at K 2013 a new Crosslinking Process: Thermal Treatment chambers” and no. 488 “SILON – “the future
starts now” is the slogan of the K 2013”.)
This new technology results in significant savings in total costs particularly energy, time and the related logistics in comparison to
standard production technologies, which use hot water or steam. The
whole final treatment process takes half the time and is a major innovation. It will bring about major changes in the future of manufacture of
new products from SILON’s PE-Xb polymer.
The display of SILON succeeded in attracting many new customers. Its customers’ and visitors’ countries of origin were made up of the
following approximate percentages: 30% from Germany, 50% from the
EU and 20% from overseas (America, Asia, Africa, Australia).
The displayed De Lama Company sterilization equipment will be
used to equip SILON’s new “Technikum” research and development center and will be available for
production and treatment of samples of its customer’s products as standard.

KWD-globalpipe, 06.02.2014. A line based on these components, with an
output capacity of up to 1,200 kg/hour, was recently commissioned at a major
Asian processor for the production of PE100 pipes with external diameter up
to 1,000 mm.
The extrusion head features a 16-spiral distributor
system that guarantees thickness uniformity on the
pipe's entire circumference. The high-torque EA 130
HP extruder has a 400 kW drive, a high thermal
exchange feeder, and a 40-diameter plasticizing unit
extending the output rate up to 1,500 kg/hour.
The extrusion line has two vacuum tanks: the first is
10 metres long and offers the possibility of separating
the first stage from the second stage by means of a
hydraulic cylinder, in order to facilitate start-up operations and introduce an ultrasonic thickness gauge; the second tank, 6 metres long, is single stage.
The total length of the cooling section is 34 meters, this size being necessary for the production of
tubes for applications at PN 6 and PN 8 pressures.
The 8-track haul-off can reach a tension of 9,000 N, while the rotary knife cutting unit can handle
HDPE pipes with thickness up to 60.5 mm and is equipped with universal pipe blocking vices. In
order to check the quality of the final product, the extrusion line incorporates a gravimetric feeder and
an ultrasonic thickness gauge, both controlled by a new-concept supervision system.

FB Balzanelli/ITA: Leader in production of coilers - Big success at K-Show
 Pipe coiling
Thanks to its long established presence in the market and
also thanks to the well-known reliability of its machines,
FB Balzanelli experienced an impressive affluence in its
booth at the K-Show 2013 in Dusseldorf.
KWD-globalpipe, 06.02.2014. The big affluence is indoubtly due to the general recovery
of the global plastics industry after 2007-2010
economic crises but also to the fact that, despite the global difficult economic situation, the
company has continued investing and developing an ambitious new-product improvement plan.
During its long history, in fact, FB Balzanelli always maintained and confirmed its top position among the manufacturers
of automatic and semi-automatic coilers, and nowadays the
company is leading the market with its new automatic solutions
for packaging pipes, not to mention its automatic palletizing
systems (which can serve more than one line).
FB Balzanelli presented at the K-Show a product line that is
definitely more sophisticated than the one showed in the previous K edition in 2010. Many improvements and developments
have been introduced during the last years, and also new
strong partnerships with other industry specialists and pipe
machine manufacturers have been established, creating this
way new partners that can now offer FB Balzanelli’s coiler as a
part of their lines, giving a complete equipment and service to
the customer.

Focus on coiler’s speed: As always, the company cared about safety, efficiency and sustainability,
but this time FB Balzanelli focused more on increasing coiler’s speed and general automation of the
lines integrated to the palletizing system. All this was done keeping the high performances the company has always granted to its customers. And that was exactly what the company showed during
the exhibition: the coiler model TR 1400, running at 200 meters per minute. The TR model was the
first one developed by FB Balzanelli, and it embodies the whole history and evolution of the company. TR coilers are famous for being the very first on the market with a configuration of two opposite
stations, but nowadays they reached an incredible level of technology. One important development
that has been showed during the K-show was the improvement of the system and the increase of the
speed for changing diameters and dimensions of the coil. The change of the diameter of the reels in
FB Balzanelli's machines is now done completely in automatic, only by changing the values in the
12’’ control panel.

SICA/ITA goes green with innovations in the field of plastic pipes at K 2013
 Belling and cutting machines
TRS 160 W cutting machine for cutting PVC, PP and PE plastic material / Belling machines:
Multibell 200M belling machine for PVC sewage pipes, Everbell socketing machine for
processing PP pipes and Unibell 200 E&P
KWD-globalpipe, 06.02.2014. Sica, an Italian
pipe machinery producer, presented a wideranging innovation at the K-exhibition in
Dusseldorf: “Green Machinery” to save energy, materials and costs
with swarfless cut and chamfer technology for PVC pipes and belling
machines with short-wave ovens.
TRS 160 W cutting machine can cut and chamfer without removing material. This manages to save a considerable quantity of raw
material that affects the 80% of the pipe cost, but also to avoid problems of scrap suctioning and recycling. In traditional cutting machines, also in those with knife or tool, chips and dust end up partially
between saw mechanisms despite suctioning; for this reason, the
necessity of maintenance increases. In contrast, the new TRS 160 W
removes the problem with an innovative system (patent pending) that
guarantees not only a clean and perfectly perpendicular cut with
knife but also a precise and well-defined chamfer, maintaining the
same productivity and a satisfactory speed; these are requirements
for modern extrusion lines.
PVC solid-wall pipe Automatic
Belling Machines: BA/CA
The new Multibell 200M belling machine for PVC sewage pipes
is, compared to the previous Everbell model, well known on the
market. This new machine has been completely revised and optimized, maintaining an important productivity per hour that reaches
900 sockets/hour with the flagship version. Maintaining unchanged
the quality standards and product reliability, the new machine introduces numerous technical features in view of a greatly reduced price
both of machine and equipment and a lot of new advantages compared to the previous version such as more compact dimensions with
equal productivity, revolutionary system for multi-socketing pipes,
ease of use and quick format change. In fact, with the innovative and
functional technical solutions, there's a decrease of more than the
60% of the machine tools compared to the previous model, with
significant savings for the costumer in terms of investment and time
required for retooling. The machine is still completely pneumatic, with
the inevitable advantages related to the higher cleanliness and the
www.kwd-globalpipe.com

KWD-globalpipe 507
February 06, 2014
superior ease of management thanks to the absence of the hydraulic
unit. New important accessibility standards have been achieved with
the introduction of a completely movable machine bench: the solution
allows complete and safe access to the main areas required for set-up
in order to facilitate and accelerate the format change phases.
The new Everbell socketing machine for processing PP pipes.
The Everbell, which maintains only the name of the previous model,
has been completely rethought and modernized like the Multibell. In
fact, apart from specific technical solutions for socketing polypropylene pipes, the same innovative characteristics of the new Multibell
200M are present in the Everbell. The machine inherits compact dimensions, extremely rapid setup, elimination of hydraulics, low power
consumption, competitive price but high productivity, ease of use and
reduced maintenance requirements.
The Unibell 200 E&P belling machine distinguished by the electromechanical movement of the forming carriage. With this solution the
hydraulic movements are eliminated from the machine, bringing many
advantages from both functional and environmental points of view.
The kinematic chain composed by a brushless motor with resolver and
a jackscrew with ball recirculation allows the quick and silent mandrel
positioning in a closed loop with high mechanical efficiency (up to
70%). Without the need for oil cooling, this solution also allows a
considerable reduction of water use. By buying the version with air
cooling (Sica patent) and by integrating it with an external refrigeration
system (supplied by Sica), the water is completely recirculated. With
the elimination of hydraulic movements any possible oil leakage into the environment are avoided
and ordinary maintenance is reduced. The energy necessary for the forming positioning is used just
for the duration of the carriage movement. The total absence of hydraulic units brings a significant
energy saving, because hydraulic units have a clearly lower total efficiency than this new device.
