Virginia Tech Welcome
Welcome ASC Colleagues, Friends and Industry Partners
On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of the Department of Building Construction at
Virginia Tech, we welcome you to Washington DC for the 2014 Annual Associated Schools of
Construction 50th Annual International Conference. It is certainly a pleasure and an honor for
us to be the organizers and host for this 50th anniversary conference.
The theme we have chosen for this year’s conference is “Construction Education
for the Next 50 Years - Preparing our future professionals for new challenges
and opportunities including life skills, globalization, and technology-enhanced
construction.” In this regard, we have organized several events to address this theme:
Walid Thabet
1-Two pre-conference workshops are organized on Wednesday. Workshop-1 will address
the topic “Beyond Technical Skills: Personal Effectiveness People Management &
Leadership as Differentiators in Construction”. Workshop-2 will address the topic “Safety
Incident and Injury Free (IIF) – A People Centered Approach to Safety”.
2-Three industry–focused discussion panels are scheduled on Thursday afternoon; a BIM
panel, an Educating for the Future Panel, and a Sustainable High-Performance Buildings
Panel.
3-Five industry keynote speakers have been invited to make presentations and share with
you their views on current and future opportunities and challenges in construction.
In addition, 92 peer reviewed academic papers will be presented during five concurrent
breakout sessions. 35 Research in Progress and Graduate posters will be on display in the
Ballroom Foyer all day Thursday and Friday.
Thom Mills
We want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the very generous support of our sponsors listed on
pages 9 and 10. We also want to thank our Exhibitors listed on page 11. With your support, we are able to plan and
deliver a wonderful professional and social experience to our ASC members, partners and guests.
Thank you to all our speakers for your time invested to make this conference a valuable experience for its participants.
Thank you to Brian Moore for all his help and availability to answer questions. Brian has provided us with valuable
feedback and insight. Without him, it would have been very difficult to overcome logistical challenges associated with
organizing an ASC conference. Thank you also to Larry Groose for always offering support and immediate. It has
been a pleasure working with both of them preparing for this conference.
A very warm and sincere thank you to the staff of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech for
the many hours and hard work they have put towards logistics, producing conference material and making this
conference happen. Thank you Leslie Thornton-O’Brien, Lisa Saul, Jeneen Preston, Lori Atwater, Christine Long
and Matt Earnest. Without you, it could not have happened! We also want to extend a big thank you to our Building
Construction staff and graduate students for working very hard to facilitate conference organization and coordination.
Thank you Lisa Cash, Renee Ryan, Kenneth Sands and Eric Witzel. You make things happen very easy!
We have selected Washington, DC as the conference venue for many reasons. We hope you take advantage of being
in our nation’s capital and the many things the city has to offer. With over 250 registered attendees from academia
and industry from within the US and internationally, we hope that you capture this great opportunity to meet and
network with many colleagues and friends.
Thom Mills and I are looking forward to meeting everyone and making sure that you have an enjoyable and wonderful
experience.

ASC Welcome
Welcome from the ASC President
Welcome to the 50th Annual Associated Schools of Construction Conference. Thank you for being involve in ASC! This
year we celebrate the founders of the ASC. With us is Jim Young who was at the very first meeting of the ASC. Jim
Marsh, the only other living member of the founders of ASC was unable to attend for health reasons.
We appreciate the administrators, faculty and staff at Virginia Tech for hosting our Annual Conference.
They have spent many hours in planning and preparing for a successful event. Special thanks goes to Walid Thabet,
Conference Coordinator and to Thom Mills who Helped with the proposal and has also helped with the coordination
of the conference. We also want to thank Kenneth Sands, a PhD student who put together the paper abstract
book, conference logistics and registration, Eric Wetzel, also a PhD student who was in charge of all material and
items to ship to DC, conference logistics and registration, Lisa Cash, BC Administrative Assistant who has helped in
coordinating logistics, printing and travel and Renee Ryan, Academic Coordinator who created the student videos for
the pre-conference workshop and coordinated travel for the undergraduate students attending the conference.
I also want to thank members of the Board of Directors who have all had part in making the conference a success
and particularly Brian Moore who coordinated the conference schedule with Virginia Tech and Larry Grosse who has
worked behind the scenes to make things run smoothly. There are many hours of service provided by our membership
which enables the organization to run effectively.
I hope you take advantage of the committee sessions this year. We will also hear from Mike Holland who will update
us on changes to ACCE accreditation and also from Bruce D’Agostino who will inform us on the status of ABET
accreditation for Construction Management.
I always enjoy the ASC Annual Conference because I come away with so many new ideas and with renewed
enthusiasm for updating courses and improving our own program. The friendships I have made have been the
highlight of my association with ASC.
Please take the opportunity to meet some of the people who are attending for the first time and welcome them. This is
an opportunity to get to know others and learn from each other. I hope you have a great time at the conference!
Sincerely,
Jay Christofferson
ASC President

ASC Founder Awardees
Jim Young
ASC Founder
In 1965, Jim Young from Colorado State University was at the table with representatives of 12 other
schools in Gainesville, Florida for the initial meeting of what was to become the Associated Schools of
Construction (ASC). The first years of ASC were filled with intense discussions of “what is Construction
Management”, “Where should it be housed”, “What should be in the curriculum”, etc. Jim was likely the
youngest of the founders of ASC. He is now 86 years old. Jim served as the ASC president in 1978.
Jim taught in the Department of Construction Management at Colorado State University for nearly 20
years – from 1962–1976 and again from 1986 until his retirement in 1992. As a faculty member, he taught
undergraduate and graduate courses, helped develop new curricula, oversaw department research
activities, and was a key department liaison to the industry. His distinguished career includes many
publications and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Associated Schools of
Construction. Jim values a strong faculty base as a vital component of a successful program. He created
the Jim Young Faculty Member of the Year Award, which
will honor an individual selected annually by construction
management students.
After retiring in 1991, Jim was on several accreditation visits
then became involved in activities such as being a contract
representative and inspecting schools. He continues to stay
in contact with construction education and helps out when
he can. He is still involved in service to the community and
especially the grade school.
An interesting video of Jim reflecting on his career can be
seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=znT7tTHti94

ASC Founder Awardees
Jim Marsh
ASC Founder
James H. Marsh ‘51 (ARCO) was the first head of the Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M
University (1969-81). Born in 1930, he was one of the founding members of the Associated Schools of
Construction (ASC), the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and the American Institute
for Constructors (AIC). He is the inventor of the “lift shape” process for thin shell concrete construction
used in park pavilions, such as the Medo pavilion at the New York World’s Fair and in Hensel Park at Texas
A&M University. He was awarded the Former Students Association’s Faculty Distinguished Achievement
Award for Teaching in 1971 and named professor emeritus by the College of Architecture in 1991, after 33
years of service.
James was in attendance at the second ASC meeting. He served on the ASC Board of Directors.
Fishing with a good friend
Ben Tedrick, a writer from theeagle.com wrote the
following about Jim:
“The measure of a man is in the life he leads and
the path he takes through it. My good friend and
fellow fisherman Jim Marsh of Caldwell, Texas is
just one of the “Greatest Generation” that built the
better part of the America we know today. Jim is an
ol’ Ag from Texas A&M University when it was still
just a college out in the middle of nowhere. With
a host of old-world skills Jim builds many very fine
tools and treasures from scratch. My connection to
him is through fly fishing but there is so much more
to this man and his life than meets the eye. Stories
of past adventures and lessons learned always
entertain and reveal a good life very well lived”.
Ben created a short video of Jim that would be of interest to you. You can find it at:

Workshop-1 Session
Workshop-1
Wednesday, March 26 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Beyond Technical Skills: Personal Effectiveness, People
Management, & Leadership as Differentiators in Construction
Curriculums
Coordinators: Jonathan U. Dougherty, Ph.D. (J. Davis Construction) and
Walid Thabet, Ph.D. (Virginia Tech)
Description:
A discussion of construction education for the next 50 years would be incomplete without a thorough assessment
of preparing students for the realities of the construction industry both today and into the future. Technical skills are
at the core of construction education, and rightfully so as they are the skills required to complete job tasks. Equally
significant but often less emphasized are professional aptitudes, commonly referred to as soft skills, which are used
to execute the technical skills. Skills, including communication, team & conflict management, diversity & inclusion,
strategic thinking & problem solving, and leadership, will be presented by our esteemed panel of industry experts,
and current case studies of classroom solutions will be offered as foundational academic best practices. Learning
from industry and academic perspectives, this workshop will address the importance of incorporating personal
effectiveness, people management, and leadership as differentiators in construction curriculums.

Session 11
Thursday, March 27 | 2:15 – 3:45 p.m. | National Ballroom A
Building Information Modeling Panel
Moderators: Tanyel Bulbul and Walid Thabet, Virginia Tech
From Design to Construction and Construction to Facility Management: BIM and Building Lifecycle
One of the earliest premises of BIM is interoperability and seamless information flow between stakeholders. The
panelists in this panel will discuss how the current process of BIM based building production delivers this premise.
The successful integration of BIM to the building lifecycle lies in how the building information is generated, stored,
managed and retrieved. However, BIM end users need to have the skills to operate the tools and be aware of basic
concepts in order to utilize what BIM brings. The attendants of this panel will also discuss how to best integrate BIM to
the AEC curriculum as a subtopic.

Educating for the Future Panel
Moderator: Thom Mills, Virginia Tech
Construction Education Over the Next 50 Years: As the Walls Come Down
This panel session will explore the future of construction education from multiple perspectives. Among these
perspectives are how pedagogy within the academy and industry will change and morph as a matrix of alternative
deliveries will simultaneously exist and will subsequently incorporate academic and industry interactions that
ultimately will have a profound impact on academic content, its manifested format, its delivery, and the mechanisms
of future distribution. Discussion will also focus on how digital technologies are transforming pedagogy and how
an integrate classroom of the future may manifest itself. Not unlike construction itself this session will address how
materials (academic content) are handled and ultimately incorporated into their final position (the learner) by people
and equipment

Sustainable High-Performance Buildings Panel
Moderator: Georg Reichard, Virginia Tech
High-performance buildings push the envelope (enclosure) and other building systems to new limits. While excessive
energy consumption has covered for many design and operation errors in the past, this era is gone. Our new buildings
will require a different approach for design, construction, and operation, where this paradigm shifts in performance
not only requires new knowledge from designers and contractors, but also from owners, facility managers, and
occupants in the later stages of a buildings life cycle. What will this development demand from the future construction
professionals, and what can we do in academia to better prepare them for this high-performance future?
The Sustainable High-Performance Buildings Panel represents a range of industry stakeholders providing insights
regarding opportunities and barriers as they relate to the high-performance buildings industry. The panel speakers
cover the technical, economical, ecological, and legal perspectives of builders, performance contractors, design
specialists, and government stakeholders, who all share the need for a highly educated construction elite of the future.
