Organized by Slovak Equestrian Club NAPOLI.
Foreword
by the FEI President
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to
the Hippo Arena Šamorín where you will have
the opportunity to witness some great sport
in a stunning location on the banks of the
Danube River.
With over thirty-five nations signed up to
compete at the CSI 2* and CSI 3*, this is a very
international line up for this new and bustling
Equestrian Center.
So much thought and vision has gone into
the conception and creation of this venue,
I can only commend the Organisers and in
particular Mario Hoffmann for providing such
a quality, multi-purpose facility that will undoubtedly have an impact on the development
of equestrian sport in Eastern Europe.
I am a true believer in turning your dreams
into reality and that is exactly what has been
achieved here.
To all the athletes competing over the next
few days, I hope you go at least some of the
way towards achieving the goals you have set
for yourselves and your equine partners. May
horsemanship and sportsmanship provide
you with many memorable moments, and may
shared experience and comradeship prove rewarding and inspirational.
To the organisers, officials and volunteers
I send my deepest appreciation for all your efforts in making this event happen. Your dedication and your determination will ensure the
athletes, their horses and horse-owners, supporters and spectators all enjoy a weekend of
sport at its very best.
On behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), I wish all of you a wonderful
event and look forward to many more…

2 / PROGRAM / Danube Cup 2014
Dear equestrian friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Elements Resort, our brand new equestrian centre
which is located alongside the largest European river, the Danube. This project was built and
designed for the purpose of organizing worldclass events in all seven disciplines under the
Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).
The Elements Resort is a sports complex
with the capacity to host more than 18 Olympic
sports at the European or World level competition. This new complex will provide both accommodation and training facilities for recreational and professional athletes from around
the world.
Additionally, the Elements Resort offers leisure activities for children and their families by
offering the biggest educational playground in
Slovakia, including a cinema and water park. It
is our intention that this will encourage a family-oriented recreational facility that the entire
family will enjoy. I believe that with the combination of professional and recreational sport,
supported by a high capacity for accommodation and leisure activities, Slovakia will become
a leader for notable regional and international
sporting events.
and show-jumping events. These two weekend-long competitions will be the first demonstration of our ability to realize our vision. The
Danube Cup is an important and longstanding
part of our regional history and tradition, having been organized here for more than 30 years.
Over the course of two weeks, you will be able
to watch over 800 horses and riders from more
than 30 nations achieve great sporting results
in a modern venue surrounded by a friendly and
relaxed atmosphere. It is our hope that your
pleasant memories from these weekends will
encourage you to return to the Elements Resort
for future events in the upcoming months. On
September 21, 2014 we will collaborate with the
State racetrack to revive another long-standing
tradition, the flat race. In 2015 and beyond, we
have planned several other events across many
disciplines in the other facilities of the Elements
Resort.
I wish all riders and their horses good
health and the achievement of their sporting
goals, and that the spectators have a memorable experience and pleasant stay.
On behalf of the Hippo Arena Šamorín, I
would like to welcome you to the Danube Cup
Mario Hoffmann

The tradition of the Danube Cup
and Šamorín indeed belong together
Horse breeding and the equestrians sport certainly resonate in the historical
background of the town of Šamorín
It all began in 1961 when
news about Nitra’s stud farm
clearance began to spread
along with information
regarding the displacement
of racehorses from the village
of Hubice. Horses from
these areas were brought
to Šamorín and housed on
the premises of abandoned
military barracks. It was
exactly that same year when
the Breeding enterprise was
established. Its importance
was based on the fact that
it belonged among the five
national breeding institutions
which focused on breeding
stallions, contributing to
the overall national stud in
Czechoslovakia. In addition
to corporate responsibilities
associated with breeding and
trading horses, the idea to
found a new equestrian club
arose. Enthusiasm from the
horse lovers led to the creation of the Equestrian Sports
Unit DYNAMO.
It didn’t take long and the
tradition of the Danube Cup
came into existence. It was in
1964 that the first year of this
prestigious event was organ-
ized. Although the equestrian complex did not belong
amongst the world’s biggest,
even with an area of 20 hectares and only one jumping
arena, the famous brand was
built all the same. Between
1964 and 1994, as many as
26 successful editions were
organized.
Of course, the main
organizer was the Breeding
Enterprise Šamorín, together
with the Equestrian Sports
Unit DYNAMO. The Organizing
Committee consisted of five
members including personalities such as Jozef Košťál,
Margita Firbasova and even
Ladislav Gonos, known as
one of the best Slovak riders
thanks to his great success
with horses Rytmus and Rip
Korby, who was at the same
time a course designer.
The Danube Cup was a
reputable international event
attracting participants from
Hungary, Poland, Austria,
Germany, Russia and, of
course, Czechoslovakia. Back
then, Šamorín would welcome more than 70 horses
every year during one particular weekend, which were
taking part in several different
competitions on Saturday and
Sunday. This lovely event not
only caught the attention of
horse lovers, but the general
public from Šamorín and its
surroundings grew fond of
it as well. The organizers’
efforts were to ensure that
everyone felt great and each
and every event would remain
in the memories of the riders,
officials, visitors and everyone involved. It is no wonder
that since 1994, the citizens
of Šamorín have felt sad at
heart to see the tradition no
longer being kept alive. Today,
a much greater pleasure is
shared by the main organizer,
Equestrian Club NAPOLI in
cooperation with the Elements Resort, to announce
that the unique tradition of
the Danube Cup is - after
twenty long years - BACK!
It is a great pleasure
to welcome more than 30
nationalities at such a special
venue in the Hippo Arena
Šamorín.
