I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard a deer hunter say “I love the peace
and the quiet of the deer stand” or “I really find God out there being in the
woods” and “I look forward to opener if only for that reason.” I usually just
act all polite and agree with their musings – but inside me – there broods a
message I would like them to hear and for you to hear.

You can have these things every day!
Now I like deer hunting just as much as everyone else (don’t get me wrong)
and God is in the woods, His peace, His quiet, His presence. But I look
forward to finding God every day and do find Him every day especially in
my prayer room. Only recently did I convert my “man cave”/ closet in my
bedroom to a prayer room. A gracious parishioner repaired and re-painted
the 7’ x 7’ closet into this place of prayer where the silence is sheer and
distractions are non-existent. I used to pray in the bedroom and my cats
would join me, wrestle, make noise and I would hear things go off or turn on
and my phone was by my side. No longer. I enter this prayer room and it’s
me and Jesus and Mary.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says in paragraph 2691 concerning
places favorable to pray:
For personal prayer, this can be a “prayer corner” with the Sacred
Scriptures and Icons, in order to be there, in secret, before Our Father. In a
Christian family, this kind of little oratory fosters prayer in common.

(SJ)-Saint James
I wish every home had a place designated in a special way for prayer.
Someplace quiet, a quaint area with religious symbols (a crucifix for sure)
and religious books (a bible for sure) candles and adjustable light (for
ambiance); these characteristics are key. For me the big closet works well;
the corner of a quiet room can work for you and in some homes there may be
a suitable attic space.
You might tell me that you can pray everywhere and anywhere, at all times
and in any situation. Using a deer stand analogy I like to point out what to
some might seem obvious. You don’t put a deer stand next to a busy road or
in the middle of town or in a place in the woods where there is not sign or
evidence that deer has ever been. No you put a deer stand where the deer are
so that you can shoot them.

And so we have to make the effort of “putting our stands” up where we can
find God and God will find us. Don’t wait for Him in the places where He
can’t be found. Call on Him when He is near. We have to make an effort to
find God and His peace, in the quiet of our day. Create this quiet by isolating
yourself and work towards putting yourself in His presence, every day.
Can you make room for God every day?
Or just during opener?
God bless and keep you…

Papal Intentions for November
Universal: That all who suffer loneliness may experience the
closeness of God and the support of others.
For Evangelization: That young seminarians and religious may
have wise and well-formed mentors.
Annual Diocesan Indian Harvest Mass & Feast
The Church keeps this remembrance throughout the month of
November and into Advent. Days are short and growing
shorter. The growing darkness can remind us of the end of
days, when time will be no more. At this season we ask God to
speed up the coming of the kingdom, where death itself will
die. Use the Book of Remembrance “shrine” which will be set
up in church throughout the month of November. It can be
used to record the names of those who have died. Fr. David
and the parishes will be praying throughout the month for
these names.
