October, 2014
Welcome Dr. Olteanu!
We are very fortunate to be welcoming Dr.
Florin Olteanu to the SHC as our new Medical
Director. Dr. Olteanu comes to us from a care
community in New York state. He will assume
the medical care of the residents of Mere Point
Dr. Olteanu
and the patients on Bodwell the first of October.
Eventually he will be able to provide primary care to any
resident at the SHC.
Dr. Olteanu is a board certified geriatrician, which is a doctor
who specializes in care for people 65 and older. He has
completed a residency in Internal Medicine with an additional
one year fellowship training in geriatric medicine at the
University of Rochester Medical Center, NY focusing on the
medical, social, and psychological issues that concern older
adults.
A geriatrician understands the difference between normal
aging and a disease process. They can better address issues
such as memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, mobility,
and osteoporosis. They treat more than just physical problems
by recognizing how health conditions affect older adults
socially and emotionally, and vice versa.
Dr. Olteanu is very committed to caring for the whole needs of
a person. He is exceptionally aware of memory care needs,
depression, poly-pharmacy (or use of and effects of multiple
medications), balance issues, pain management and end-of-life
care. Dr. Olteanu focuses his treatment plans on enhancing his
patients’ quality of life and is eager to make a difference in the
lives of all of us at the SHC.

Mid Coast Health honored three of its own staff in a
National Rehabilitation Week luncheon celebration. Mid
Coast Health’s continuum of rehabilitation services includes
our own team from Bodwell Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center, Mid Coast Hospital’s Inpatient and Outpatient
Rehabilitation Departments, Mid Coast Medical Group
Orthopedic Therapy Center, and CHANS Home Health Care.
“Each of the peer nominated
2014 recipients exemplifies the
professional expertise of
rehabilitation services across the
continuum of care at Mid Coast
Health Services,” reports Jill
Weybrant PT, MS, Inpatient
Jim Byrne, DPT with CHANS,
Rehabilitation Manager. “Each of the Susan Allen, Rehab Aide/CNA,
and Catherine Jaquith, PT,
recipients is committed to providing MPH, Mid Coast Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation
an exceptional patient experience,
and are recognized by their peers as team players.”
Bodwell and Mere Point’s own Susan Allen, Rehab Aide/
CNA was one of the three honorees. Her then supervisor,
Rehabilitation Manager Kim Watson, had much to say about
Sue’s contributions to the Rehab Team at the SHC. “Within
her first year of employment Sue stood out - playing a pivotal
role in helping patients and residents reach their highest level
of independence. Her understanding of how nursing and
rehab work together facilitated her transition into the role of
Rehab Aide in July, 2008.”
Over the past 6 years Sue’s role in the Rehab Department
has evolved and she has taken on increasingly more
responsibility. She assists with patient care, maintains
equipment, organizes treatment rooms, oversees functional
maintenance programs on Mere Point, has numerous clerical
responsibilities, and helps out with administrative tasks. Sue
is everyone’s ‘go-to’ person, as she continues to be a liaison
between departments. We are all lucky to have Sue on our
team!”

Celebrating Assisted Living Week
With a whole lot of joyful noise we celebrated Assisted
Living Week with a plenty of toe tapping and great fanfare.
Hands down the most fun event of Assisted Living Week was
the Music Trivia Competition; Residents vs. Team Members.
Over the years a significant rivalry has developed between the
two teams and this year was no different!

Residents from getting the correct
answers. It was a heated game, but a strong
team of residents from Mere
Point, Thornton Hall, and The Garden won
by a landslide. The music trivia challenge
brought lots of laughter and smiles from
everyone who participated.

Other note worthy events: A “gelato social” with
gelato and sorbetto from Gelato Fiasco– we know that
this had nothing to do with music but we can’t pass up an
opportunity to have these delicious treats. And of course
Crazy Hat Day– who can forget the silliness of Crazy Hat
Day!

Where Are They?
With the arrival of Dr. Olteanu,
and the promotion of a few people,
we’ve done some moving around; so
here is where you can find team
members in offices.

“As a social worker my primary

emotional and physical issues,” said Mike.
“I will work with the SHC team to address
resident’s needs realistically and in as
timely a manner as possible.”
Alice Meyer, Rete Williams, Anne Hazzard, and Evelyn
Sabol show off their manicures. Spa time, offered every
other week, is a wonderful time to relax with the ladies. Polish donations welcome!
My Innerview Reminder– they went
out in the mail last week– please fill
them out and return them. We want
to know your thoughts and opinions.
Thank you!
Mike comes to us with experience in
hospice, home health care, case
management, adult mental health, and
care coordination; all of which make him a
great addition to our community.

Volunteer Joe Laurence Champions
New Alzheimer’s License Plate
An initiative to bring a new specialty license plate to Maine
to recognize Alzheimer’s disease is under way. Show your
support and reserve your plate today! In order to petition the
legislature to approve this specialty license plate, we must
submit 2,000 registrants for their car or truck (under 10,000 lbs.) Don’t miss your
opportunity to bring this license plate to Maine. To reserve your plate please visit the
Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter website at www.alz.org/maine to find
more information and print a form to reserve your plate today.
None of this would have been possible without Joe Laurence, a dedicated
volunteer at The Garden, who recently lost his wife Maureen to the disease. Two
years ago Joe realized that having a specialty license plate in the State of Maine
would be a great way both to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association and raise
awareness of the disease, so the Alzheimer’s Association helped Joe join with two
other community members to design the plate, work on promotional materials and
work with the DMV. Just this past month their plate design was approved by the
DMV! You can help spread the word about this specialty license plate by visiting the
alz.org/maine website and click on the “Volunteer” button.

Our monthly fundraising for the Alzheimer's
Association continues in October with a
Halloween Party Basket.
Tickets are a bargain at 3 for $5 and can be
purchased at the SHC. The raffle will be drawn on
