Smoothbore™ Collar The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar is an enabling MWD technology for the measurement while drilling application. The SmoothboreTM Collar directly solves, eliminates or improves several MWD mechanical failure areas such as directional instrument failures, running gear washout failures, and failures to achieve the planned wellbore position due to discrepancies between the alignment of the directional instrument and the borehole. The directional instrument failures are frequently accelerometer failures which result from drilling shock and vibration. MWD running gear and non-magnetic drill-collar washout failures result from severe erosion caused by high-drilling fluid velocities and turbulent localized flow resulting from MWD centralizer geometry. Wellbore position uncertainties result from systematic errors caused by misalignments between the directional instrument and the bottom-hole assembly and the borehole, and magnetic interference. Conventional MWD centralizers use star-shaped rubber isolators located at the end of each pressure housing section. These centralizers are about 2 inches long and are usually located about 6’ apart. (See Fig. 1) Fig. 1 If the drilling shocks are large enough, or if the wellbore is curved or if the centralizers are trimmed too short (or unevenly), then the pressure housing can hit the NMDC ID. When the accelerometers break, the drilling must be stopped while the MWD tool is tripped out of the hole and replaced. Looking at Fig. 1, it’s easy to see that at each point of contact for each conventional centralizer, both the pressure housing and the collar are subject to severe erosion due to drilling fluid turbulence. The result of a running gear washout might be a catastrophic lithium battery explosion. The result of a collar washout is a loss drilling fluid pressure, stuck drill pipe and the possible loss of the well bore. Oil, gas and geothermal wells are only productive if they are properly positioned in the target reservoir. Misalignments of the directional instrument are often caused by misalignment or deflection of the directional pressure housing inside the non-magnetic drill collar. Looking again at Fig. 1 it is easy to imagine that careless selection or trimming of the centralizers results in poor alignment of the directional pressure housing within the non-magnetic drill collar. www.admsdevelopment.com Smoothbore™ Collar The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar eliminates MWD centralizers, which in turn eliminates centralizer turbulence. The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar also has a fluid-flow cavity designed to ensure that the flow velocities are kept below the critical erosion threshold. (See Fig. 2) The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar eliminates any and all metal-to-metal contact between the MWD tool pressure housing and the collar ID. The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar molded element has multiple lobes and each of these lobes has a spiral pitch so that MWD pressure housing is contacted continuously along its entire length. (See Fig. 2 and 3) Fig. 2 Fig. 3 The ADMS SmoothboreTM Collar completely eliminates any possible misalignments between the collar and the directional instrument. ADMS, Advanced Drilling Measurement System, is an idea, a vision and a dream realized. ADMS is people with direct experience in directional drilling, measurement while drilling, downhole motor design, sub-surface surveying, electrical and electronic design, mechanical systems design, firmware and software programming and project management. These people are committed to creating a system that is better and different, and aren’t constrained to being compatible with existing MWD systems. Our goal is to succeed and commercialize a “better” MWD system. ADMS is experience put to practice. www.admsdevelopment.com 6830 N. Eldridge Pkwy, Suite 204 Houston, TX 77041-2536 O: 713.575.1300
