This is a fully online course and therefore will not have scheduled face-toface meetings. Your instructor, Mr. Kieft, will be available to meet with you
virtually (online office hours) during predetermined times throughout the 14
week semester and will have on-campus office hours as indicated on his
faculty website and stated below in Summer A. This online course allows you
the freedom to access the course at times convenient to you and your
schedule. However, you are expected to do all your work based on the
schedule in the class syllabus with specific testing dates. Successful MTB
1370 online students are self-motivated and possess the self-discipline needed
to manage their time effectively. Due to the nature of this course, it is
necessary that you be computer proficient and possess the following skills:
competence in the use of email, familiarity with accessing and downloading
content from web sources, comfort with navigating possibly unfamiliar
programs (such as Blackboard) proficient use of a word processing program,
and the ability to scan and send attachments via email. Email
communication is expected through Lakehawk mail, make sure you activate
your account prior to the beginning of the semester. You will have to take
three paper and pencil tests in person at one of the Lake-Sumter State
College Learning Centers(Leesburg or South Lake). You will reserve your
“Math Online” testing time through the Learning Center webpage which
you can get to from the Quick Links menu at the LSSC website (upper right
hand corner).

Description:
Instructor:
This course provides an overview of mathematic operations necessary for the calculation
of oral and parenteral drug dosages. Emphasis is placed on numerical and measurement
systems, decimals, fractions, ratio and proportions, percentages, conversions, and
calculations of medical dosages. This is a required course for students planning to enter
the nursing program.

Requirements:
Scientific TI30 XS MultiView calculator required. You will provided the TI-30XS
Multi-View calculator in the Learning Center for your tests. You may not use your
personal calculator or one on your smart phone. Graphing calculators such as the TI-83
or TI-84 are not permitted on any test..

1. The student will be able to perform mathematical calculations involving decimals and
fractions.
2. The student will be able to convert within and between the three systems of
measurements used in health care.
3. The student will be able to calculate proper medication dosages.

order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records
located in the Admissions/Registrar’s Office.
If you miss a test (and you should not since you select your testing appointment), you must
contact the instructor on the day of the test or earlier to request a make-up (do not wait
until the after the testing period to request a make-up!). You may also change your testing
appointment time by using the link provided in the testing appointment confirmation email or by logging in to the test appointment website on the top right hand corner. Makeups may be allowed at the sole discretion of the instructor—depending on whether, in the
instructor’s judgment, the student has missed the test for a valid reason, and provided the
student contacted the instructor no later than the day of the test. The instructor may ask
the student to supply supporting documentation (such as a doctor’s note).
Withdrawal Deadline:
The deadline for withdrawing from this course this semester is Wednesday, July 9,
2014.
There will be 3 Exams in the course, each worth 1/3 of the overall grade. Each test will
be worth 100 points.
Methods of Evaluation:
Each test will be taken at a reserved appointment time in the
Leesburg or South Lake Learning Center. Directions to make
appointments on the Learning Center website will be given in Blackboard.
You do not submit homework in this course for a grade.
