SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: Psalm 2:12:1-12
Psalm 2 1Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together
against the LORD and against his Anointed One.
3"Let us break their chains," they say, "and throw off their fetters."
4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
5Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6"I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill."
7I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.
8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
9You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery."
10Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Several things come to mind as I read this
Psalm. This passage speaks of the Sovereignty of God, which is a fancy of saying God
is in charge and is in control. No matter
what happens, God always wins in the end.
Here are a few miscellaneous comments on
this chapter:
- In verse 2, the phrase “Anointed One” is used. This is talking about Jesus. It’s significant to
note that the English word Messiah comes from the Hebrew word for anointed one and
the English word for Christ comes from the Greek word for anointed one.
- A couple of times God’s anger and wrath are mentioned. It is important to understand that
God’s anger is always an expression of His righteousness. Because God is Holy and Just,
there are times where judgment or punishment is needed. God does not “lose His temper”
and get out of control with selfish anger; rather, His wrath is part of His Righteousness.

- Note the words “be wise” in verse 10. This does not apply just to kings but to all of us. We
need to seek God’s wisdom for every part of our life. Don’t ask if something is sin or not,
or if it’s wrong; instead, ask: what is best?…what is wisest?

- Verse 11 says that we should “fear the Lord.” This does not mean we are to be scared or
afraid of God. Rather, this means we should have a healthy respect for God…to be in
“awe” of God. We need not be afraid of God, our Savior and Friend, but we do need to be
in awe of Him.
