The various phases of life and their manifestations in theory and social reality constitute a wellestablished area of research in the fields of western medieval studies and ancient history. In this
respect the Byzantine East has been widely neglected. This symposium will focus on the Byzantine
experience of adolescence, which may be defined as the biological transition from childhood to
adulthood as well as the social and psychological experience of leaving the care of parents,
guardians and family groups and the gradual integration into adult society. The symposium aims at
elucidating this phenomenon by addressing a variety of questions, from diverse disciplinary
viewpoints. Issues for discussion may include: the characteristics and descriptive terminology of
adolescence; the prevailing attitude of adults towards adolescents; their role and position in society;
the conflict of generations and its articulation in expression of doubts, criticism, youth culture.
Another set of questions relates to the mechanisms of transition from one stage to another departure
from the family, preparation for the next stage through education, marriage and monastic orders as a
new entry point, social and religious rites of passage, the integration of people coming of age into
social structures and professional organisations. All of these experiences vary according to gender,
social strata, and depending on the historical period. The symposium aims at contributing to a more
accurate definition and a better understanding of all mentioned problems and to show future
trajectories for research. The symposium as well as the project are funded by the FWF Austrian
Science Fund.

"BEATI I PACIFICI" (BOSE, 03-06.09.2014)

XXII Convegno Ecumenico Internazionale di spiritualita' ortodossa "BEATI I PACIFICI" (Bose,
mercoledi' 3-sabato 6 settembre 2014) in collaborazione con le Chiese Ortodosse
"Beati coloro che si adoperano per la pace" (Mt 5,9): l'annuncio di questa beatitudine evangelica,
spesso ripetuta nella Divina Liturgia, non cessa di interpellare la coscienza di ogni uomo e la prassi
delle chiese.
Il XXII Convegno ecumenico internazionale di spiritualita' ortodossa intende porsi in ascolto del
vangelo della pace, che chiede alle Chiese di essere un fermento di riconciliazione e di pace tra le
donne e gli uomini contemporanei. La speranza della pace annunciata in Cristo non e' un'utopia
estranea a un mondo dominato dalla logica del potere e del conflitto, ma e' un evento nella storia,
che s'incarna in ogni tempo in uomini e donne di pace e riconciliazione.
Il convegno, approfondendo la dimensione teologica e rivelativa della pace, desidera proporre un
itinerario attraverso l'ascolto e lo studio della Scrittura e della liturgia, le parole sulla pace nei padri
della Chiesa, l'insegnamento dell'esperienza monastica e spirituale dell'Oriente cristiano, per
discernere le radici della violenza e offrire le ragioni di un'autentica educazione alla pace:
nell'ospitalita' del diverso, nell'operosità della riconciliazione, nella fatica del perdono.
Per il credente, la pace e' un dono. I salmi cantano il dono della pace di Dio al suo popolo, che e'
anche un appello pressante per la conversione: se gli uomini operano la giustizia e fanno
misericordia, la pace abita la terra; allora "misericordia e verita' s'incontreranno, giustizia e pace si
baceranno" (Sal 85/84,11). Nel Nuovo Testamento, la pace e' il dono del Cristo risorto alla sua
comunita' (Gv 20,19-21), e' un frutto dello Spirito Santo (Gal 5,22), e' il sigillo della nuova alleanza
che Dio compie con tutta l'umanita' e la creazione intera, riconciliata nella vita, nella passione,
morte e resurrezione di Gesu' (cf. Rm 5,1.11).
La riflessione dei padri d'Oriente e d'Occidente stabilisce un legame essenziale tra la pace nel
mondo e Cristo, "nostra pace" (Ef 2,14). Commentando le parole di Gesu' ai discepoli nel quarto
evangelo ("Vi do la mia pace", Gv 14,27), san Cirillo di Alessandria identifica il dono della pace
con l'invio dello Spirito Santo: "La pace che sorpassa i principati, le potenze, i troni e le
dominazioni e ogni intelligenza (cf. Fil 4,7 e Ef 1,21) e' lo Spirito di Cristo. Per mezzo di lui il
Figlio ha riconciliato la creazione intera con Dio Padre". La dimensione cosmica di questa
riconciliazione per mezzo di Cristo "di tutte le cose che stanno sulla terra e nei cieli" (Col 1,19-20)
e' colta con forza nei commenti dei padri: "Erano gia' stati riconciliati – scrive Giovanni Crisostomo
– ma era necessaria una riconciliazione perfetta, senza alcuna traccia d'inimicizia". Questo nucleo
teologico e' il fondamento dell'unita' della Chiesa e della riconciliazione tra le Chiese, secondo una
linea di pensiero che si sviluppa coerentemente da san Clemente Romano a sant'Ireneo di Lione, da
san Basilio a san Gregorio di Nazianzo.
I padri privilegiano l'aspetto spirituale della pace rispetto alla sua dimensione politica e sociale, che
sara' la preoccupazione della riflessione teologica e filosofica moderna. E' piu' difficile acquisire la
pace interiore di quella esteriore, osserva Giovanni Crisostomo commentando il salmo 4. Il detto di
un grande monaco russo del XIX secolo, Serafim di Sarov, condensa l'insegnamento della
tradizione ascetica su questo punto: "Acquisisci la pace, e migliaia di persone saranno salvate
attorno a te".
I cristiani nel mondo sono chiamati a un'esistenza di riconciliati, per tradurre la novita' della pace
cristiana nell'oggi della storia. Pensare la pace resta una sfida aperta per la teologia contemporanea.
La tradizione della santita' ortodossa offre una risposta a questa ricerca nella beatitudine vissuta da
innumerevoli testimoni di pace. Sant'Antonio il Grande "aveva ricevuto da Dio il dono di
riconciliare quanti erano in discordia"; come lui, hanno mostrato una via di riconciliazione santi
come Francesco di Assisi in Occidente, e le grandi figure spirituali della tradizione ortodossa in
tutte le sue espressioni, per giungere ai pionieri del dialogo tra le Chiese e i nuovi martiri del XX
secolo che, a immagine del loro Signore, hanno vissuto l'amore fino all'estremo, fino al perdono del
persecutore.
"Chi ci insegnera' la bellezza della pace?", si chiedeva san Basilio il Grande: "L'artigiano stesso
della pace. Egli ha stabilito la pace con il sangue della sua croce tra le cose del cielo e della terra
(Col 1,20)". Diventare artefici di pace significa esercitarsi a vedere la bellezza della pace e viverla,
per ritrovarne la forza di attrazione e dilatare la speranza di pace nel mondo.

Il Convegno e' aperto a tutti. -- Tutte le relazioni saranno tradotte in simultanea in italiano, greco,
russo, francese e inglese. -- L'arrivo dei partecipanti e' previsto per martedi' 2 settembre. Il
Convegno si concludera' con il pranzo di festa sabato 6 settembre. -- L'ospitalita' sara' assicurata
presso il Monastero e presso alcune strutture nelle vicinanze di Bose, per cui e' previsto un servizio
giornaliero di trasporto. -- Per l'iscrizione al Convegno e' necessario prima telefonare alla Segreteria
organizzativa e successivamente inviare la scheda di iscrizione entro il 25 agosto 2014. -- La

Un fil rouge traverse les siecles chretiens depuis l'origine: la condamnation du schisme.
Parallelement a' la differenciation lente et souterraine entre la chretiente' latine et les Eglises
d'Orient, l'Union continue d'etre presentee comme une necessite' ecclesiologique et politique. Mais
cette situation apparemment binaire n'offre-t-elle pas un face-a'-face trompeur? Si, de part et d'autre,
une meme doctrine presente l'unite' de l'Eglise universelle comme un ideal a' retrouver, c'est bien
souvent la papaute' qui est a' l'origine des modalites imposees a' cette "communion". Du XIIIe au
XVIIIe siecle, choisissant des moments clefs des diverses tentatives de reconciliation des Eglises,
effectives ou avortees, cet ouvrage se concentre sur les manieres de pratiquer et de theoriser la
"reduction" du parti avec lequel on est cense' dialoguer. De l'Union de Lyon (1274) aux strategies
de conversion elaborees par la Congregation romaine de la Propagande de la foi a' l'epoque
moderne, avec quels outils chaque confession construit-elle son orthodoxie exclusive et autorisee?
Les auteurs de ce volume replacent dans son historicite' particuliere l'universalite' revendiquee par
les acteurs et examinent les dynamiques de la confrontation: tout en s'arc-boutant sur des
thematiques bien determinees (le Filioque, le pouvoir du pape, etc.), ces debats donnent lieu a' des
evolutions riches qui participent pleinement de l'histoire sociale et intellectuelle des rapports entre
Orient et Occident dans la longue duree.

Contrairement a' l'idee que nous nous faisons normalement du livre, basee sur notre familiarite' avec
l'imprime', le livre manuscrit du Moyen Age et de la Renaissance est habituellement un objet
beaucoup plus complexe, qui a subi de multiples vicissitudes.
Souvent, le codex medieval est complexe des l'origine. Il est compose' d'une ou plusieurs parties,
produites a' la meme epoque dans un meme lieu, ou a' des points tres differents du temps et de
l'espace. Mais le codex medieval est egalement complexe dans son histoire. Chacune de ses parties
a pu avoir son histoire propre, avant d'etre finalement unie a' d'autres parties avec lesquelles elle a,
a' partir de ce moment, une histoire commune. L'etude de l'objet resultant d'un tel processus
demande qu'il soit envisage' dans son histoire constitutive, sous le double aspect genetique l'origine de chacune de ses composantes - et stratigraphique - la succession des differentes formes
sous lesquelles chacune des composantes a circule', isolement ou unie a' d'autres.
Ces dernieres decennies, nombre d'auteurs se sont attaques au probleme de l'analyse des manuscrits
complexes. Apres une ample presentation critique de ces etudes, le present ouvrage propose une
methode d'analyse genetique et stratigraphique du manuscrit complexe. S'appuyant sur les notions
de production et de circulation, elle etudie les processus de constitution et de transformation du
codex, releve les discontinuites observables dans ses unites constitutives et, sur la base de ces
observations, tache d'en reconstituer l'origine et l'histoire.
Pourquoi les auteurs ont-ils intitule' leur essai "La syntaxe du codex"?
C'est par analogie avec les categories grammaticales habituelles, qui distinguent morphologie et
syntaxe. La morphologie du codex concernerait les elements qui le constituent (les mots de la
grammaire): matiere utilisee, composition des cahiers, type et style d'ecriture, encre, couleurs, mise
en page, ornementation, reliure, notes de lecteurs et de possesseurs. La syntaxe mettrait en relation
ces elements pour comprendre comment le codex "tient ensemble" et se modifie avec le temps. Les
reflexions des auteurs concernent uniquement ce dernier aspect de la "grammaire du codex".

Starting 2014
Research and teaching at the Department of linguistics and philology covers approx. twenty
different languages and linguistic subjects as well as computational linguistics. These include many
of the important languages and cultures in the Middle East, to which can be added Hindi, Swahili,
Chinese, Ancient Greek and Latin. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and general linguistics
are also part of the department.
Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as
an employee of the department. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and
research, and contribute to and participate in the department's activities. Teaching and/or
administrative tasks may be involved (up to a maximum of 20%).
To qualify for a doctoral position in Greek at Uppsala University, a candidate should hold a master's
degree in Ancient and/or Byzantine Greek. Applicants who have obtained qualifications equivalent
or comparable to this in Sweden or abroad are also eligible to apply.
Doctoral students in Greek at Uppsala university work in a lively research environment with
scholars interested in the Greek language and Greek culture from antiquity and onwards. For this
position we are looking primarily for a candidate who is interested in working with texts from the
Byzantine period, and we would welcome approaches that include literary and/or rhetorical studies.
The proposed doctoral project must be described in a research plan attached to the application.

including a brief description of research interests; a research plan (4-5 pages); publications, if any;
other relevant documentation the applicant wishes to cite in support of his/her application, such as

Summer Course 2014: Greek Palaeography and Codicology
During the first part of summer 2014 we will give a course on Greek Palaeography and Codicology:
To Read and Study the Ancient Book 7,5 ECTS. The course is a master course and given in
English.
The course will introduce students to the development of Greek writing techniques and materials
from Late Antiquity to the Renaissance. It will also practically prepare the student to analyse and
describe a medieval manuscript from the palaeographical and codicological points of view by
providing the terminology and the reference materials used for such work. Further it will survey the
contemporary approaches to book conservation and the digital resources that are transforming the
study of manuscripts.
The studies will begin with a self-study period followed by c. 10 days of seminars in Uppsala (the
first two weeks of July) and concluding with a week for writing the final essay.
In order to pass the course the student shall be able to:
- read Greek text in manuscripts from different periods and in different hands (from Antiquity to the
16th century)
- approximately date manuscripts and, if possible, locate them to a geographical context
- reflect upon issues of manuscript culture and textual transmission
- present a basic codicological analysis of a manuscript
- account for the basics of how to catalogue manuscript

In July 2014 the 5th International Septuaginta Summer school will be organised in Goettingen.
Participants will take part in 14 seminar sessions, during which they will have the opportunity to
work intensively on the production and the interpretational history of the Greek versions of the
book of Isaiah. Various cultural activities complete the programme.
The summer school is organised by the Septuaginta-Unternehmen of the Academy of Sciences and
Humanities of Goettingen, which represents more than a century of critical study of the Septuagint.
Cooperation partners are the Faculty of Theology of the Georg-August-Universitaet Goettingen and
the Centrum Orbis Orientalis et Occidentalis (CORO).
Students and doctoral students from European and other universities will investigate the theories
concerning the production of LXX Isaiah, as well as the interpretational history of the Greek
versions of Isaiah in Judaism and Christianity.
An attractive cultural programme will offer the participants an exclusive insight into the university
town of Goettingen by following the trail of great scholars who built the rich tradition of the city
and its university and shaped the reputed biblical research projects of the Academy of Sciences and
Humanities.

Ce cours propose une introduction a' la recherche sur les manuscrits byzantins et a' leur utilisation,
dans la perspective des principales disciplines concernees, sur la base de manuscrits bibliques. Il
traite, entre autres, des aspects suivants:
- La materialite' et la structure des objets (codicologie)
- Les ecritures utilisees et les grandes etapes de leur histoire (paleographie)
- Principes de l'illustration, et questions relatives a' l'organisation des ateliers (histoire de l'art)
- Le manuscrit comme media de lecture et de transmission des textes, notamment dans la
dialectique des textes et des paratextes (histoire des textes)
Ce cours est destine' aux etudiant(e)s avance(e)s ou diplome(e)s en Philologie classique, Etudes
byzantines, Theologie, Histoire de l'art ou dans les disciplines voisines, ainsi qu'aux scientifiques
actifs dans ces domaines. Une connaissance du francais et de l'allemand est requise: maitrise active
d'une langue; comprehension orale de l'autre langue. Le cours donne droit a' 3 credits ECTS, sous

A Truthful Record: The Byzantine Institute Films
The Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives (ICFA) at Dumbarton Oaks presents a new online
exhibit entitled "A Truthful Record: The Byzantine Institute Films":

This exhibit aims to reveal the context of the films created by the Byzantine Institute between the
1930s and 1940s by combining them with archival records from the collection "The Byzantine
Institute and Dumbarton Oaks Fieldwork Records and Papers".
A Truthful Record features thirteen motion picture films from the Byzantine Institute, which are
stored and preserved at ICFA: one of the Red Sea Monasteries in Egypt, eleven of the Hagia
Sophia, and one of the Kariye Camii, both in Istanbul, Turkey. The color films created by the
Byzantine Institute's photographer Pierre Iskender provide significant testimony of the mosaics at
Hagia Sophia and Kariye Camii and the techniques employed to uncover and conserve them. When
combined with notebook entries written by Byzantine Institute fieldworkers such as Ernest Hawkins
and the brothers Richard and William Gregory, the history of the films' creation truly comes alive.
Thomas Whittemore, who founded the Byzantine Institute in 1930, made wide use of the moving
images, screening them for donors and patrons (such as Robert Woods and Mildred Bliss), the
Byzantine scholarly community, and an interested general audience in the United States and
Europe. The exhibit is divided into three sections that investigate how the films were made and how
they were received by contemporary audiences: Style and Content, Technique, and Purpose and
Reception. You can also explore the archival materials chronologically using a detailed Timeline.
This online exhibit was created by Fani Gargova, ICFA Byzantine Research Associate. The ICFA
team would like to give special thanks to the Dumbarton Oaks Publications Department for their
