What?
What is the SAR NIF?
The SAR NIF is a Federal Contribution Program that responds to SAR
needs in Canada.
• Federally Funded and Managed
• Annual allotment of $8.1 million
• Funds are assigned to new initiatives only after current funding
commitments have been considered
• Provides funds for Air, Marine and Ground search and rescue projects
that will improve the National Search and Rescue Program (NSP)
• Provides funds for Prevention, Response and R&D projects lasting up
to 3 years in length

Who can apply for SAR NIF funding directly to the
NSS ?
• Federal managing departments with SAR responsibilities:

Canadian Coast Guard, Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
Canadian Forces, Department of National Defence;
Meteorological Service of Canada, Environment Canada;
Parks Canada;
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Transport Canada.
• Provincial and Territorial governments
• National, Provincial and Territorial SAR Volunteer Associations

Who can receive?
Who is eligible for SAR NIF Funding?
The following individuals and organizations may all benefit from
SAR NIF funding however they must apply through either the
federal department, provincial/territorial government or the national,
provincial or territorial SAR association of jurisdiction. They cannot
apply directly to the NSS.

How?
The Application Process
The SAR NIF Applicant’s Guide and its annexes is the primary tool
to be used when applying for SAR NIF funding. It includes among
other things:
• The annual Call for Proposals
• The annual priorities
• The application form, instructions for completing it and all other related
forms and documents
• Eligibility requirements
• A list of certain eligible and ineligible expenditures
• Information pertaining to the SAR NIF Partners
