NPA ! NEW YORK-BASED TELEVISION PRODUCTION COMPANIES LAUNCH FIRST-EVER NONFICTION PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION (July 1, 2014) – NEW YORK – A group of major New York-based nonfiction television production companies announced today the formation of the Nonfiction Producers Association (NPA), a non-profit trade group dedicated to maintaining, growing and nurturing the documentary and nonfiction TV production industry. Headquartered and founded in New York City, but open to membership across the United States, the NPA, which has been in the planning stages for many months, was created as a professional body that can provide industry information, training and assistance to production companies, their staffs, and production employees, and promote “best practices” that ensure production employees, independent contractors, vendors and other stakeholders have a voice and platform for meaningful discourse that can encourage and contribute to the continued success and welfare of all parties within the nonfiction television industry. TV veteran Rick Feldman has been appointed as the NPA’s executive director. Feldman was previously president and CEO of NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives), where his successful nine-year run included the market’s auspicious move from Las Vegas to Miami. The NPA will be served by a Board of Directors and an Executive Committee made up of representatives from the member companies. Member organizations are committed to providing a safe, supportive and professional working environment, fair and competitive wages, access to and contributions toward healthcare, controls on and recognition for hours worked, access to retirement options, and opportunities to foster training and communication. Companies that have already signed up for the NPA include Atlas Media Corp., Big Fish Entertainment, Jane Street Entertainment, Leftfield Pictures, Loud TV, Magilla Entertainment, Original Media and True Entertainment. In its first statement, the NPA said: “For nearly two decades, the creators, producers, artists, craftspeople and technicians working in reality TV – including documentaries, character-driven reality series, lifestyle series and competition shows – have enthralled audiences worldwide, telling extraordinary stories of real people who share their talents, dreams and frailties. Nonfiction content is a significant part of the programming landscape and, thus, warrants an Association dedicated to the advancement and protection of all those whose talents, hard work and commitment literally created the industry. The businesses of nonfiction television take pride in providing vibrant creative workplaces and opportunity for thousands of ambitious men and women. The Nonfiction Producers Association looks forward to growing its membership, and eagerly and enthusiastically welcomes many more production companies to our ranks as we unite to protect and celebrate our dynamic entertainment genre.” For more information visit www.nonfictionproducers.org.
