The organisers of the The Nigel Botting
Meeting for Teachers of Chemistry thank the
RSC, SSERC and the University of St Andrews
for their continued support.
The main venue for this meeting is the Purdie
Building, lecture theatre A, School of
Chemistry at the University of St Andrews. The
map overleaf shows its location. Registration

The Eighteenth Meeting of "The Nigel Botting Meeting for
Teachers of Chemistry" includes a new, lab-based, practical
chemistry session at the heart of the programme with activities
led by Bob Worley (CLEAPSS), SSERC, RSC and the
University of St Andrews. Participants will have the opportunity
to see a range of practical demonstrations/activities intended for
classroom use. The RSC’s Spectroscopy in a Suitcase team will
also encourage as many delegates as possible to have a go!
Please note your interest in Spectroscopy in a Suitcase with

The Nigel Botting Meeting programme aims to provide updates
on the very latest curricular developments, to provide many
inspiring ideas and activities to take back to the classroom and to
update us on important aspects of modern chemistry in everyday
life.
The meeting will begin with Grant McAllister from Education
Scotland as he outlines the new support and materials currently
being developed by Education Scotland to support the new CfE
qualifications, in particular, the forthcoming CfE Higher. This is
followed by a discussion of the current position of CfE in
science teaching.
The Royal Society of Chemistry, in
association with other learned societies, is conducting two
surveys. The first relates to curriculum structures and their
impact on the sciences; the second explores teacher
understanding and confidence levels across key aspects of the
sciences in the context of the implementation of CfE. The
session will be led by Douglas Buchanan and report on the
findings and use the evidence to suggest what should be a focus
for change.
We are excited to welcome Bob Worley to the meeting, who is
well-known as chemistry adviser at CLEAPSS (SSERC’s
counterpart south of the border). As well as an occasional TV
appearance, Bob is famed for his extensive experience in
practical chemistry, advising teachers and technicians, and the
development of ‘microscale chemistry’ which provides
extremely quick and effective practical methods for the
classroom. These are often cheaper, greener, safer and allow
much more time to explore and discuss the underlying chemistry
in class. Better still, you’ll get a chance to try his practical tips
and tricks for yourselves during the lab session that follows.
Lunch will take place in two sittings to accommodate the new
laboratory sessions. Groups will be organised at the start of the
day. The exhibition area and tea/coffee will be available as usual
and with time for delegates to explore the exhibitions and to chat
with each other before resuming their seats in the lecture theatre.
The afternoon session begins with an update on the latest RSC
activities in Scotland from RSC Education Coordinator,
Margaret Ritchie. The meeting concludes with the welcome
return of Katherine Haxton to St Andrews.
Katherine is currently programme director for Chemistry at
Keele University, after her early interest in chemistry began at
Woodmill High School, Dunfermline. She is fascinated by the
use of technology to enhance learning and the student experience
as well as ways of sneaking sustainability into the curriculum.
There will be opportunities during the day to visit the
manufacturers’ exhibition and displays.
