A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
NNS Lays Keel
for Washington
With weld shields in place and sparks
flying, Newport News Shipbuilding, hosted a
keel-laying ceremony Saturday for the future
USS Washington (SSN 787), a Virginia-class
submarine named for the Evergreen State.
The submarine’s sponsor is Elisabeth Mabus,
daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.
Acting as the keel authenticator, during the
ceremony she chalked her initials onto a metal
plate. Her initials were then welded onto the
plate, which will be permanently affixed to
the submarine as a symbol of her relationship
with the ship, its shipbuilders and crew.
“I look forward to watching this boat come
together from steel and skill,” Elisabeth said.
“I look forward to christening it, I look
forward to commissioning it, but most of all,
I look forward to meeting the men and
women who will make up the crew.”
Other ceremony participants included
Secretary Mabus, who gave the keynote
speech; Vice Adm. William Hilarides,
commander, Naval Sea Systems Command;
Vice Adm. Michael J. Connor, commander,
Submarine Forces; Matt Mulherin, president
of NNS; and Jeffrey Geiger, president of
General Dynamics Electric Boat.
“The vessel whose keel we lay today will be
the most advanced ship in the world, its...

... technology unmatched,” Secretary Mabus
said. In his principal address, he celebrated the
shipbuilders and supplier base dedicated to
constructing the future USS Washington. “Their
dedication, their expertise, their incredibly
hard work will fashion from steel and wire and
electronics the premier platform that will be
the Washington,” he said. “We build the best
warships in the world.”
Washington will be the 14th Virginia-class
submarine and the seventh VCS submarine to
be delivered by NNS.
“Each submarine we build is a reflection of the
hard work and innovation of our more than
23,000 shipbuilders, and it is most appropriate
that this submarine is named for Washington,
a state that thrives on innovation,” Mulherin
said. “When SSN 787 is complete, she will be
the most innovative and most technologically
advanced submarine in the world, and today is
the first step in her journey to get there.”

niece of Facilities Maintenance Manager Rhonda King, served as the flower girl.

In-Service Carriers
Presents Quality Award
NEW! NNS’ Holiday Food
Drive to Begin Today
In October, Newport News Shipbuilding’s
In-Service Aircraft Carrier (ISCVN) Division
introduced a new award program to recognize
employees who demonstrate the highest level
of commitment to first time quality in their
daily work habits. The ISCVN construction
and production leadership team selected Gary
Hoffstaetter (X43) as the monthly winner
from the four weekly winners.
“Gary consistently goes above and beyond his
duties to produce quality work,” said X70/X43
Foreman Scott Marois, Hoffstaetter’s
supervisor. “In the past few months, X43
finished the catapult base alignment on USS
Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). Gary demonstrated
exceptional knowledge and performance during
this process by making sure the key liners
installed met the close tolerances required
and had a deviation of no greater than 0.003
in., a perfect quality fit. This critical tolerance
must be met on 360 liners on each catapult.
His coordination for measuring and checking
and double checking these liners every night
reflected an expert level of craftsmanship and
his dedication to excellence in all aspects of
Newport News Shipbuilding’s annual food
drive to support the Virginia Peninsula
Foodbank will be held Nov. 24 - Dec. 12.
Non-perishable food items will be accepted
as well as monetary donations. Shipbuilders
should place food items in labeled collection
boxes in designated places throughout the
yard. Deliver cash/checks (made payable to
the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank) to Brenda
Roth (O18) in Bldg. 520-1 by Dec. 10.

Rep. Steven Palazzo Visits NNS
On Nov. 21, Newport News Shipbuilding hosted Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., for a tour of
the the shipyard. Palazzo represents the fourth district of Mississippi, which includes Ingalls
Shipbuilding.
The visit provided an opportunity for Palazzo to see nuclear shipbuilding at Newport News and
understand the value that Mississippi suppliers contribute to ship construction in Newport
News. Palazzo’s visit included a tour of aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), which is about
85 percent complete and scheduled for delivery in 2016.
“I was pleased to spend some time with the shipbuilders of Newport News Shipbuilding today,”
Palazzo said. “Along with Ingalls Shipbuilding in my congressional district, the shipbuilders are
building an impressive array of warships to serve our nation for many years to come. I was also
pleased to get a close look at the critical role of Mississippi’s supplier base in the construction
and maintenance of aircraft carriers and submarines. Shipbuilding is truly a national endeavor
with contributions from all 50 states, and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in Congress to support a strong Navy and Coast Guard.”
Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for more information on the visit.
Green Appointed to HII VP of Corporate Development
Andy Green, currently serving as Newport News Shipbuilding’s vice president of
Component Fabrication and Assembly, will join the Corporate Development team as
vice president. Green joined HII as vice president of Investor Relations, in early 2011
before moving to NNS. In his new role he will work in coordination with NNS and Ingalls
Shipbuilding to identify emerging shipbuilding markets for potential business growth.
He will be located at the corporate headquarters in Newport News. Read the
organizational announcement sent to employees last week.
