Camping Fees for Persons with
Disabilities – BC Provincial Parks
Everyone is welcome! Bring a lawn chair or blanket or
share a picnic table. Please bring a favourite salad or
dessert to contribute to the food table, and join us for
an afternoon in the sun. This is a great opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.
Please RSVP to Sandy at [email protected] or 250-4774112 so that we can plan for enough sandwiches.
If you are designated a Person with Disabilities
(PWD) and receiving PWD benefits under the BC
provincial government Employment and Assistance
Program (administered by the BC Ministry of Social
Development and Social Innovation) then you are
eligible for free camping for your camping party and
no charge for a second non-recreational vehicle.
Please check the BC Parks website for procedures:

Ambassador
Program
The individuals that attend the
programs at Lifetime Networks are
the most unique, talented, and diverse group of individuals that I have
ever had the pleasure of knowing.
After two and a half years of being
connected with this organization I
felt that it was time to show off these
traits outside the cheery yellow walls
of the Lifetime Networks building.
Over a lunchtime conversation with
my colleague Heather Bergink, the
idea of the Lifetime Networks Ambassadors program sprouted. We
thought about how incredible it could
be to have participants of programs
at Lifetime Networks come out to

works, and why they choose Lifetime
Networks. The talks were incredible.
I have never met people who could
describe so concretely and so succinctly what makes Lifetime Networks such a fabulous organization.
Since this first meeting, we have
invited these individuals to attend
events as representation for Lifetime
Networks. Individuals have presented at Scotia Private Client Group,
The Lifetime Networks Gala Dinner
and Auction, and a community forum
on accessibility. Two Ambassadors
are planning on joining Heather
Bergink who will be leading a workshop at Volunteer Victoria and there
are plans to attend Chamber of
Commerce events. These individuals
are the best representatives of Lifetime Networks and have the potential to be future leaders as self-advocates in the disability movement.

networking functions, presentations,
and other events to speak to their
own experiences with Lifetime Networks and why they choose Lifetime
Networks.
After much support from WendySue and other staff members,
Heather and I drew up a project
proposal. In a few short weeks we
were able to turn this thought into a
reality. We approached 6 individuals
to participate in this new program
and they were asked to sign a terms
of reference document detailing the
expectations for them agreeing to be
part of this program. We were well
on our way to having the first group
of Ambassadors.
Our first meeting was nothing less
than inspiring. I put the group on the
spot and asked the individuals to
share with the group a little bit about
the programs they are a part of, their
favourite moment with Lifetime Net-

Building and maintaining networks of lifetime friendships to support people with disabilities.
11th Annual Gala Dinner and Auction
The 2014 Lifetime Networks Annual Gala Dinner and Auction was the
largest and most successful yet. With
188 people attending the 11th annual
event, we raised $53,500.00 thanks
to your support and the support of
many businesses and individuals in
our extended community! Our Master
of Ceremonies, Stephen Andrew from
CHEK Television, was outstanding
as usual. One of the highlights of the
evening was the Lifetime Networks
Band led by Cam Culham. The band
members played their instruments with
joy and sang loud and clear during the
sing-a-long; while Drew entertained us
with his juggling.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house
when Taiha Salvador was shown on
the big screen giving her speech telling
us all that Lifetime Networks was like
the TV show Cheers, “Where everyone
knows your name, and you’re always
glad you came”. Taiha shared her journey with us and in doing so allowed us
all a glimpse of why Lifetime Networks
was founded and why we hold events
like the Gala Dinner and Auction – to
support individuals like Taiha and their
families.
During the evening Lifetime Networks also recognized long term
supporters Vancouver Island Almost

Wild ARC
Every Thursday morning, you will find
the Being a Citizen Environmental Studies Group volunteering at the Wild Animal
Rehabilitation Center (WildARC) in Metchosin. This is the fifth volunteer placement this
group has been a part of including Saanich
Parks “Pulling Together” program, LifeCycles Project Society’s Kitchen Garden at Six
Mile Pub, Barefoot Organics and Saanich
Native Plants at Haliburton Farm. At each
of these volunteer placements the group
has become an integral part of the volunteer community. The WildARC placement
sees us doing the laundry, dishes and cage
cleaning for the “Spit and Polish Crew”.
While the crew finds scraping the dirty laundry and scrubbing the messy cages mildly
off putting, they have a lot of pride knowing that they are doing great work in helping the wild animals of Vancouver Island
return to their rightful homes. During our
time at WildARC we have been approached
two deer visited us while we were cleaning cages and have seen baby raccoons
in incubators, ducklings in an outdoor pen
and a squirrel being given a bath. These
experiences help us to reinforce each week
that our contribution is an important one.
Each week our duties mount as the busiest
season for WildARC is about to begin. Our
crew is ready for the task!

Your dedication, love and commitment
continue to inspire us with energy and

makes a difference in our community.
We hope to see you at

Networks
It has been a wonderful few
months in the Networks program.
We have been busy helping to start
up two brand-new Networks, hiring
and training new Network Facilitators, and recruiting and welcoming 7 new Network Friends. We
conducted a Network survey which
was very helpful because many
great ideas emerged about how we
can make the Networks program
even better. We also celebrated
Networks Family Day in February.
We had an excellent turnout, and
all enjoyed sharing lots of laughter,
games, conversation and food.
At our recent Gala Dinner and
Auction there were many familiar
faces from the Networks in attendance, and we received many
generous donations from a variety
of people involved in the Networks
program. One of the most exciting
donations that we auctioned off
was Don Sefton’s beautiful painting “Tiger, Tiger”. Don created this
piece of art with the support of
Victoria artist Robert Amos as part
of the Mt. St. Mary Friday art group,
of which Don is a long-standing
and enthusiastic member. Lifetime
Networks is grateful to Don and the
Sefton family for their kind donation.
Employment Program
The learning continues in the
Employment Program workshops
and we now have eleven regular
participants. Two of our participants
are working in permanent full-time
positions and we have three participants who have recently completed
temporary part-time positions. Summer is a good time to gain valuable
work experience and everyone in
the group has been hard at work
doing informational interviews and
mock interviews in preparation for
employment. We will be inviting
people in the community to come
in and talk about their work experience and how they reached their
career goals. Over the coming
months we will hear how these individuals arrived at their career goals
and, hopefully, we will be inspired
to follow our own dreams and find
successful, sustainable employment. Onwards and upwards!
Community Engagement
Every Sunday night, a group of men come to hang
out at Lifetime Networks to eat, game, chat, and build
new friendships. We recognized that there were a bunch
of young guys in our community that were looking for
more opportunities to make friends. The men had similar
interests so a men’s social group was created.
The group is facilitated by two community support
workers who do a great job involving the group in all
of the monthly planning. Everyone selects a week to
choose an activity and take on a leadership role within
the group. The activities range from watching movies
and playing video games, to playing pool or going bowling. It is exciting that a simple social evening can make
a big difference, and to see this niche group meeting the
need for facilitating friendships.

1st Place – Inclusion BC’s 2014

2nd Place – Inclusion BC’s Lights,
Camera, Inclusion! 2013 Contest
The Lifetime Network Victoria Winter
Art Studio Group had the opportunity
to enter a piece of art into the province wide art contest for the 2014
Inclusions BC Conference. Drawing
inspiration from the conference theme
of “Tides of Change: Justice, Diversity and Inclusion for All”, the group
worked collaboratively to create a
stunning image of a tidal landscape
that speaks to the diversities that we
experience and that we are. Within
the group of 10 artists, we are happy
to share and learn from each other’s
diversabilities, skills, wisdom, and
life experiences. We are excited to
announce that our masterpiece has
been given 1st place in the contest
and was featured at the Conference
and in all of the Conference related
media!!! We hope the piece puts a
smile on the faces of those that view
it, just as it did for us when we created it!

to submit a video to Inclusion BC’s

contest. Our amazing entry was
produced through the creative vision
of Calvin Heathcliff, the technical
expertise of Rachel Knoop and the
enthusiastic participation of people in
our Being a Citizen and Employment
programs. We are so pleased and
proud to announce that our video,
entitled “Relationships at Lifetime

Lifetime Networks we understand the importance of friendship as being one of the
cornerstones to a fulfilling life.
We create opportunities for people with
disabilities and their families. We provide
friendship and support services so that all
people can live rich and rewarding lives in
our community – safely and with friends that
care.
It is almost summer and the weather is
finally starting to cooperate. What does that
mean? It is time to start training - to walk,
run, roll or cheer for the Lifetime Networks
GoodLife Fitness Marathon Team. Over the
past several years I am proud to say that
Lifetime Networks has had the largest team
entered into the Charity Pledge Program;
we started traditions with the first non-racing
wheelchair participant and we have raised
over $100,00.00 over the past six years. Last
year we were 58 team members strong raising over $18,000.00 to support people with
developmental disabilities. Corbin Andrew
was the second highest fundraiser of all the
Charities raising over $4,000.00. This year
our goal is to raise $20,000.00. Monies
raised this year will support the following two
causes:
- One Day Together, a one day celebration of diversity at Topaz Park; where citizens, young and old, can dance together,
play together and eat together. Last year
more than 500 community members attended. This year’s event is September 6, 2014
from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm.
- Bursaries for self-advocates to support
individuals to participate in both local and
provincial advocacy work.
On June 13th four self-advocates and
three support staff attended the Inclusion BC
Conference in Nanaimo. This would not be
possible without funds raised from fundraising ventures, like the Marathon Team. Watch
the next newsletter for stories on the experience these young adults had.
To join our team, please contact Carlene
at 250-477-4112 or email [email protected].
