Introduction
Dear Members and Friends
Since incorporation in March 2013, the Chamber’s membership base has gown to over 70 members. Our members represent a diverse range of industries, with the
strongest industry representation in extractive industries (15%), education (15%) and professional services (30%).
2013-2014 – Year in Review
2014-2015 – Strategic Plan and Initiatives
This year we have focused on our primary objectives of:
Next year, the Chamber will continue to seek to align Australia’s industry interests
with growth sectors and market opportunities in Myanmar. Our strategic plan
outlines key strategic priorities including:
1. Increasing awareness of Myanmar and market opportunities for Australian
companies.
2. Supporting Australian businesses seeking to enter or explore opportunities in
Myanmar.
3. Assisting with capacity building and skill transfer for the Myanmar private and
public sectors by sharing Australian industry best practices and expertise.
In March 2014 the Chamber organised and hosted, in conjunction with Austrade,
one of Australia’s largest commercial delegations to Myanmar. The Australian
delegation brought together 20 Australian companies with a combined market
capitalisation of over $110 billion, with a strong interest in Myanmar and focus on
the Extractive Industries. The delegation fostered new relationships and
opportunities for Australian delegates.
In 2014, the Chamber signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation
and assistance with the Republic of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) which creates more opportunities for our
members to collaborate with Myanmar companies and industry.
The Chamber also hosted business briefings and functions with Myanmar
government and industry representatives for our Australian members. We also
successfully hosted two industry skills seminar in Myanmar which showcased
Australian industry expertise to Myanmar counterparts.
•
facilitation of high-level dialogue between the two countries on business and
investment issues
•
promotion of responsible investment in Myanmar by Australian companies
•
opportunities for collaboration, relationship building and technical assistance
between Australian and Myanmar businesses
The Chamber was the successful recipient of Austrade’s Asian Century Business
Engagement Plan funding under which he Chamber will receive $120,000 to
implement its Networks Through Skills Development Program (NTSD). NTSD
will allow the secondment of Myanmar professionals to Australian companies to
deepen business linkages between the two countries and promotes business
opportunities. It will also provide funding for Industry Skills Seminars to be provided
by our members and Australian companies to assist with much needed capacity
building in Myanmar.
We look forward to continuing to work together in this extraordinary period in
Myanmar’s history. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of the
Management Committee or send us an e-mail at [email protected]
Yours sincerely
The Management Committee
