UV-CURABLE POLYIMIDES Mark D. Soucek Department of Polymer Engineering, University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325, USA [email protected] Maleimide-terminated imide (MTI) and acrylated maleimide oligomers/polymers with varying molecular weight were synthesized and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The MTI maleimide polyimide oligomers were formulated with two reactive diluents, N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) or Nvinylpyrrolidone (NVP), and were photopolymerized with and without a photoinitiator (PI). The acrylated bismaleimides were formulated with AMP. The kinetics of film formation was investigated using real-time FTIR and photo-differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal and viscoelastic properties of UV cured films were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and DSC. When no photoinitiator was used, the imide/NVP formulations polymerized and the DMAA/imide formulations did not. It was surmised that the NVP reacted via a donor/acceptor complex, and the DMAA could not due to the electron-poor double bond. The acrylated maleimides were formulated with and without silica. Both the reaction rates and the abrasion resistance were effected by the silica loading.
