Arctic Optical Networking Kurosh Bozorgebrahimi, UNINETT 8th CEF networkers workshop, Prague 2014 Outline Some facts about Svalbard and Ny-Ålesund UNINETT´s Network activities in Svalbard • • • What we are doing Why we are doing it How it should be done 19. desember 2013 2 Where are we? Some Svalbard facts Between 74 and 81 degrees North 2527 Human citizens 3000 Polar Bear citizens Main activity • Coal Mining • Research • Tourism Governed by Norway Svalbard Treaty Strict laws to protect the environment and the cultural heritage Longyearbyen, the main village, at 78 degrees north, has a university center, UNIS Ny-Ålesund is a village at 79 degrees north dedicated research Some Ny-Ålesund facts Mining was main activity until 1962. Between 30 – 300 citizens Zeppelin harbor for north pole expeditions around 1925 Ca 20 nations have permanent research stations in Ny-Ålesund A lot of research going on there, much related to environment and climate VLBI-station, 3rd most important in the world Radio silence Svalbard Mainland cable 2004 http://www.webcitation.org/66rn5jf5w http://www.webcitation.org/66rgS0tTr Svalbard: Network history and activities in 2014-2015 (1) Pre 2004; Satellite link to Svalbard; ~ 50 Mbps, mostly for NASA and NOAA. Only a limited number of ISDN connections for the rest of us. 2004: Two cables laid from Longyearbyen to the mainland Pre 2005: 64 kbps satellite link to Ny-Ålesund used by NMA and AWI, the rest of Ny-Ålesund shared an IPover-ISDN connection via a 2Mbps radiolink covering both POTS, Broadcasting etc. 2005: 2+0 STM-1 radiolink with approx. 140 Mbit/s UNINETT connection, the rest for TV and POTS 2006: Successful eVLBI trials. Fully operational in production soon afterwards. 2016/17: NMA preplanning of a new VLBI station able to produce 2x10 Gbit/s per node Ny-Ålesund Longyearbyen Harstad 1GbE 1GbE 1GbE SUBCOM DWDM(1440km) “Space Norway” SDH UNINETT´s Network (IP and DWDM) Svalbard: network history and activities in 2014-2015 (2) 2008: A brief calculation on the cost of a subsea cable 2010: Funding surprise: ~7.5 M€ from the government for a new cable which have been extended to ~11M€ MNOK in order to deploy two redundant cable path. 2013: signed fiber cable deployment contract with Global Marine System 2014: ongoing submarine cable deployment. Finished by the end of September We are running a tender process in order to deploy DWDM equipment. Expected DWDM system ready for service by April 2015 Parallel with DWDM deployment we will upgrade our IP-network in Svalbard too. Some facts about Ny-Ålesund Longyearbyen submarine cable Two cable route Distance: about 260km per route (less than 50dB fiber loss) Cable will be partly buried (<2 m) and partly laid on surface Cable landing points are secured by Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) against icebergs and other shore events Line Termination equipment will be collocated with mainland SLTE in Longyearbyen ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) 10 Ny-Ålesund Submarine cable route Submarine Cable Submarine Cable Network, Some terminology Mainland Connectivity options 1. Running UNINETTs connections as Wavelength services and subwavelength services 2. Alien Wavelength over TE-subcom submarine DWDM system 3. Sharing Optical Spectrum on one fiber pair 4. Using another fiber pair and install parallel SLTE 1. Both DWDM (LTE) and LMS delivered by TE 2. DWDM (LTE) delivered by third-party but LMS delivered by TE and managed by Telenor 3. DWDM (LTE) delivered by third-party but LMS delivered by TE and managed by UNINETT 4. both DWDM (LTE) and LMS delivered by 3.party Drivers for a cable to Ny-Ålesund e-VLBI, and a new observatory planned from 2016 – much more capacity needed! (Very-long-baseline interferometry) Need for a more reliable network solution than today´s one link radio solution can offer. Increasing research activity The end of the radiolink – environmental risk of fuel leakage on the relay station. New VLBI station Uninett Network Services Dedicated Capacity Lambda and sub-lambda services No layer two services. Layer two service deployment policy is under discussion. IP-connectivity 19. desember 2013 17 Summary Submarine cable deployment by the end of September 2014 DWDM deployment by April 2015 Upgrading of IP-network by Q1/2015 Svalbard – Mainland connection by leased capacity and leased wavelength in 2015. Looking for alternative Mainland connectivity solution for future deployment VLBI is the main driver but there are many other research activities that will benefit of high capacity connectivity to Ny-Ålesund.
