OUTDOOR EMERGENCY CARE COURSE SCHEDULE for Fall, 2014 SPIRIT MOUNTAIN SKI PATROL 8 - 2 2 - 2014 ALL SESSIONS ARE FROM 6:00 PM until up to 9:30 PM. The Outdoor Emergency Care Course instruction will be located at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. Course dates will be from 9-10-2014 to 11-22-2014 The OEC Course will consist of 2 parts: 1. On-line learning assignments that must be completed prior to class. 2. Classroom activities and hands-on skills practice/scenarios which will cover the following topics: Wed. Sept. 10 – 3 East Classroom. Welcome & Introductions to National Ski Patrol. OEC Course and student expectations/requirements, topic/schedule/assignments discussion, student Q & A’s, course registration and purchase of OEC 5th edition text book. Candidates should be prepared to pay $210 for course fees, NSP dues and textbook by check or cash, as the 1st assignment will be given for the 9-15-14 class. Monday Sept. 15 – Anatomy & Physiology, Vital Signs (329A) - Emphasize Skeletal, Respiratory and Cardiovascular Systems - Anatomical Planes and Terms - Vital Signs: pulse, pupils, respiration, BP, LOC, AVPU & temperature Wed. Sept. 17 – Patient Assessment (3 East) 1 - Scene size-up, Scene Safety, BSI and PPE - Primary and Secondary Assessment, Trauma vs. Medical Patient - SAMPLE, OPQRST, Chief Complaint (NOI or MOI) and head-toe exam - Begin scenarios Mon. Sept. 22 – Shock, Airway Management and Oxygen Administration (329A) - Review Respiratory and Circulatory Systems - Causes, stages and four types of shock; signs and symptoms of shock - Demo and practice oxygen administration (nasal cannula, NRB, bag valve) - Insertion of nasal and oral airways, assemble and disassemble O2 tank Thurs. Sept. 25 – Soft Tissue Injuries/Bleeding (3 East) - Review assessment, SAMPLE, O2, etc. - Three methods for controlling external bleeding - Demo and practice bandaging (cling, cravat, pressure palm, pressure head, pelvic sling, etc) Managing an open chest wound, stabilizing an impaled object - Review closed injuries (contusion, hematoma and crush injury) Mon. Sept. 29 – Upper Extremity Injuries (329A) - Review Musculoskeletal System, key terms and principles of splinting - Demo and practice assessment and splinting/sling & swathe for shoulder injuries (blanket roll and airplane splint), clavicle, A/C separation, ribs, reducing posterior sternoclavicular injury, splinting forearm/wrist, fingers, hand. - Demo and practice splinting humerus & injured elbow, application of figure eight splint Thurs. Oct. 2 – CPR/AED (329A) Mon. Oct. 6 – CPR/AED (if only one night is needed, schedule review night or night off) (3 East) 2 Thurs. Oct. 9 – Lower Extremity Injuries #1 (329A) - Review A&P of lower extremities, including skeletal and circulatory systems - Demo and practice quick splint for tib/fib fractures, knee and ankle sprains - Demo and practice anatomical alignment of lower leg fractures - Full scenarios incorporating new and previous skills and knowledge Mon. Oct. 13 – Lower Extremity Injuries #2 (329A) - Review and practice quick splint for lower extremity injuries Discuss reasons for applying traction for a closed femur fracture Demo and practice application of Sager Traction Device Scenarios involving Sager and O2 Thurs. Oct. 16 – Mid Course Review (329 A, B, C) Mon. Oct. 20 – Rescue Basics, Principles of Trauma, Moving, Lifting and Transporting Patients (329A) - Review BSI, PPE, Hazardous materials - Review principles of trauma, emphasizing pediatric considerations (peds triangle) - Demo and practice non-urgent and urgent moves, Power grip and lift, BEAN and BEAM lift, four transport positions, log roll onto a backboard (NO backboarding) - Demo and practice Jams and Pretzels Thurs. Oct. 23 – Head and Spine Injuries #1 (329A) - Review A&P of Skeletal and Nervous Systems - Reasons for backboarding (head, neck, pelvis or spinal injury, femur and unresponsive) - Demo and practice sizing and application of Stiffneck Select cervical collar - Demo and practice securing a patient to a long spine board (backboard) – supine position Mon. Oct. 27 – Head and Spine Injuries #2 (329A) 3 - Guided practice backboarding from a supine position Demo and practice Pelvic Sling Demo and practice Helmet and boot removal Immobilizing a standing patient (both methods) Extrication and backboarding from Jams and Pretzels positions Thurs. Oct. 30 – Medical Emergencies (329A) - Altered Mental Status, Allergies, Anaphylaxis, Acute Abdomen, GI&GU - Pediatric considerations - Auscultation of breath sounds, metered dose inhaler, auto injector - Assisting normal child birth ,abdominal and thoracic trauma Mon. Nov. 3 – Environmental Conditions/Incident Command/Special Populations (3 East) - Cold and Heat related injuries and treatment Plant, animal, altitude, geriatric, behavioral and water emergencies Demo and practice extrication from a Sit-ski Review Incident command and triage (demo and practice) Thurs. Nov. 6 – Burns/Face, Eye and Neck Injuries/Skills Review (329A) - Review injuries and treatment to face, eye and neck - Types, classification and treatment of burns - Begin skill reviews (splinting, bandaging, shoulder injuries, O2 administration, helmet and boot removal, blanket roll/airplane splint, quick splint for lower extremity) Mon. Nov. 10 – Review with full scenarios (3 East) - Backboarding, Sager Traction Device + O2, shoulder injuries, medical emergency, multiple injuries and patients including bleeding and bandaging Thurs. Nov. 13 – Review for final written exam (329A) Mon. Nov. 17 – Open night or practical exam review (329A) Wed. Nov. 19 – Review for Final Practical Exam (329A,B,C) 4 Sat.
