COURSE DESCRIPTION
The conference is named in honor of William H. Saunders, MD,
in recognition and gratitude of his numerous contributions to
the discipline of Otolaryngology and the department at The
Ohio State University. The William H. Saunders Lectureship
Award recipients are internationally renowned for their
accomplishments in patient care, research and education
in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. The program
is designed to highlight both clinical and research activities
of the faculty, residents and alumni of the Department of
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State
University.
This program is directed to practicing otolaryngologists,
residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurse practioners,
audiologists, speech pathologists and nurses.

Thursday Evening Outing
Please join us Thursday evening from 7:00PM to 10:00PM at
Gordon Biersch brewery and restaurant, 401 N. Front Street.
Gordon Biersch is conveniently located across the street from the
Hyatt Regency, just steps away from Nationwide Arena. We have
arranged for a brewery tour, free sample tasting and heavy hors
d’oeuvres in a private group setting. This is a casual gathering,
offering a chance to mingle with your fellow alumni and friends.
James Tours Cancelled
Unfortunately we were just informed by the James’ contractors
that no tours will be offered to the public after April 2014.
OSU Eye and Ear Institute Tour
Added
We have received some interest in tours of the Eye and Ear
Institute and will be offering them from 5:00PM to 6:00PM on
Thursday in place of the James tour. Please indicate on your
registration form if you will be joining the EEI tour, 915 Olentangy
River Road.
The cutoff date is May 19, 2014 so please make your reservation
by this date to ensure a room for the weekend. Parking at
the Hilton is self-park for $20 or valet for $24. If you miss the
deadline or find that all rooms have been booked, please visit our
website for a list of hotels in the surrounding area.
The Hilton Columbus is located directly across the street from the
Hyatt Regency. In the event there is adverse weather, a walkway
connects the Hilton to the Greater Columbus Convention Center
which connects to the Hyatt Regency. It is roughly a 3 minute
walk to the meeting space inside the Hyatt Regency.

Dr. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations
and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents,
the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum,
and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American
Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and
served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’
Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the
International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia.
Active in a number of national professional and service organizations
during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands, and the National 4-H Council.
In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors
of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was
asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital
Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission.
And in December 2012, he was asked to serve on the Columbus Education
Commission.

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is pleased to
welcome Dr. E. Gordon Gee, Former President of The Ohio State University
and current President of West Virginia University as the tenth David R. Kelly,
MD, Lecturer in Medical Economics. Dr. Gee has served in higher education
for more than three decades and in 2009 was named by Time magazine
as one of the top-10 university presidents in the United States. Earning an
honors degree in history from the University of Utah, Gee went on to earn
his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief
Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being
named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Over the last four years at Ohio State, Matta’s teams advanced to a
second appearance in the Final Four (2012) during his tenure, have made
an unmatched four-consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament
“Sweet 16,” own three Big Ten regular-season crowns and have appeared

In total, Matta spent six seasons as a full-time assistant coach at three
universities, helping his squads compile a composite 128-58 (.688) record
and make six postseason tournament appearances. He was on the bench
in five-consecutive conference tournament championship games and
won four league tournament championship rings. He was in the NCAA
tournament five times as an assistant under four head coaches and in the
postseason NIT once. He established himself as one of the nation’s best
young coaching prospects during a six-year assistant coaching stint.

As a Buckeye, Matta has more wins than any previous Ohio State head
coach after nine seasons on the job with a 250-73 record to date. In 13
years as a collegiate head coach, Matta has produced 20 or more victories
each year which includes three years at Xavier (78-23) and one at Butler
(24-8). His average record as a head coach after eight seasons (221-65)
in Columbus is 28-8. Matta is one of just two coaches nationally to post
20 or more wins in each of his first 13 seasons as a head coach.

FEES: The registration fee is $300. The registration fee includes
continental breakfast, coffee breaks and lunch on Friday, June
20, 2014. The banquet on Friday evening at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel, 350 N. High Street, is $100 per person. Saturday’s
golf outing at the Golf Club of Dublin is $125 per person and
includes green fees, golf cart, lunch and prizes. Meeting fees
will be refunded if notice of cancellation is received no later
