TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RVAA CITY/COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS, EACH
SWIMMER MUST:
1. HAVE PAID 2014 RVAA DUES
2. BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF AN RVAA MEMBER CLUB
3. HAVE COMPLETED IN AT LEAST TWO WEEKNIGHT MEETS
4. HAVE ESTABLISHED A QUALIFIED TIME IN EACH EVENT AND A
CUTOFF TIME (AS LISTED IN THE RVAA NEWSLETTER) FOR THE IM
AND 100 FREE. MEET DIRECTORS HAVE THE RIGHT TO WAIVE THIS
REQUIREMENT UPON WRITTEN REQUEST WITH A MEDICAL WAIVER.
REQUEST MUST BE SUBMITTED BEFORE OR AT THE SEEDING
MEETING ON JULY 16, 2014.
ENTRIES:
THE GOVERNING DAY OF AGE WILL BE AS OF JUNE 1, 2014.
SWIMMERS 6 AND UNDER CAN ENTER FOUR (4) EVENTS. SWIMMERS
SEVEN (7) AND OLDER MAY ENTER A TOTAL OF FIVE (5) INDIVIDUAL
EVENTS. THE MEET DIRECTORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REJECT
OR CHANGE AN ENTRY.
ENTRIES WILL BE OPEN TO GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE SWIMMERS
AS ESTABLISHED BY THE RVAA QUALIFYING TIMES CHART OF 2014.
FEES:
$10.00 PER SWIMMER PLUS A $25.00 TEAM FEE FOR FOOD AND
DRINK. PAYMENT WILL BE IN THE FORM OF A TEAM CHECK PAYABLE
TO THE RVAA. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE.

AND SEEDING:
“NO TIMES,” “COACHES TIMES,” OR “DQ TIMES,” WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED FOR ANY EVENT IN THE CITY COUNTY MEET. ENTRY
TIMES MAY BE ESTABLISHED IN THE OPEN EVENT ON THE LAST TWO
WEEK NIGHT MEETS OF THE REGULAR SEASON. NO ONE MAY SWIM
TO BETTER ANY TIME IN THE OPEN EVENT. THE OFFICIAL TIMES
LISTING WILL BE THE COMPUTER PRINTOUT MASTER LIST THAT IS

THE FOLLOWING ARE MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO
REGISTER FOR CITY COUNTY:
1. COMPLETE MASTER ENTRY FORM WITH RESPECTIVE ENTRY
FEES.
2. ALL THE VOLUNTEER WORKERS’ SLOTS MUST BE FILLED.
VERIFICATION WILL BE DONE ONLINE AT THE TIME OF THE MEETING.
3. ALL TEAMS MUST RETURN THEIR RIBBON SUPPLY AND THE
REMAINING RIBBONS MUST BE COUNTED AND LABELED PROPERLY.
4. ALL HOSTING TEAMS MUST RETURN THE EQUIPMENT ISSUED TO
THEM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON. - STARTER SYSTEM,

THE MEET DIRECTORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DISALLOW
PARTICIPATION OF ANY TEAM THAT FAILS TO MEET THEIR
WORKERS’ REQUIREMENTS. WORKERS MUST REPORT TO THE
VOLUNTEER COORDENATOR’S TABLE TEN MINUTES PRIOR TO THEIR
SHIFT. FAILURE TO REPORT AS ASSIGNED COULD RESULT IN THE

TEAM PLAQUES WILL BE AWARDED BASED ON TOTAL CUMULATIVE

NINE THROUGH EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD RELAYS MUST BE COED. THE
RELAY TEAM MUST INCLUDE ONE REPRESENTATIVE OF EACH OF
THE FOLLOWING AGE GROUPS: 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; AND 15-18. IF
THERE IS NOT A SWIMMER AVAILABLE IN THE PROPER AGE GROUP,
THEN THE TEAM COACH CAN SUBSTITUTE A SWIMMER FROM A
LOWER AGE GROUP TO SWIM IN THE HIGHER AGE GROUP. UNDER
NO CONDITION CAN THERE BE A SUBSTITUTION OF AN OLDER
SWIMMER FOR A YOUNGER SWIMMER.

2014 SHORT COURSE USA SWIMMING RULES AND REGULATIONS

TIMES. ALL PROTESTS MUST BE IN WRITING TO THE MEET REFEREE
WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE ALLEGED RULE INFRACTION. RESULTS
WILL BE OFFICIAL IN 45 MINUTES FROM RESULT POSTING UNLESS
PROTESTED.

COACHES:
FOOD AND DRINK:
THE NUMBER OF COACHES WILL BE LIMITED TO THREE (3) FROM
EACH TEAM ON THE DECK. IF TEAM DO NOT LIMIT THE NUMBER OF
COACHES THE MEET REFERREE WILL HAVE THE OPTION OF
BANNING A COACH FROM THE DECK FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE
MEET.
THE RVAA WILL RESERVE A PRIVATE AREA TO PROVIDE LUNCH AND
DRINKS FOR ALL OFFICIAL WORKERS (THOSE WORKING 4 HOURS OR
MORE PER DAY) AND FOR THE COACHES. FOOD AND DRINKS FOR
ALL OTHERS MAY BE PURCHASED AT THE YMCA SNACK BAR.
EACH MEMBER TEAM IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT A $25.00 FEE TO HELP
PROVIDE FOOD AND DRINKS FOR THE OFFICIAL WORKERS AND
COACHES. PLEASE PAY THIS FEE AT THE SEEDING MEETING WHEN
YOU PAY THE ENTRY FEES FOR THE CITY COUNTY MEET.
PUBLIC VIEWING: BLEACHER SEATING AT THE POOL DECK IS AVAILABLE FOR
EXPECTATORS. HOWEVER, SPACE IS LIMITED. THE RVVA KINDLY
ASKS ITS TEAMS AND FAMILIES TO LEAVE THE POOL DECK ONCE
THE EVENT IS OVER SO THAT OVERS MAY ENJOY WATCHING THEIR
EVENTS.
NO CHAIRS ARE ALLOWED ON THE POOL DECK UNLESS
AUTHORIZED BY THE MEET DIRECTOR.

TEAMS TO “HANG OUT” AS THEY WAIT FOR THEIR EVENTS. PLEASE
ASSMBLE ONLY IN YOUR DESIGNATED AREA.CHAIRS BROUGHT
FROM HOME, SLEEPING BAGS, PILLOWS, ETC ARE WELCOME IN
THESE SPACES. PLEASE ME MINDFUL OF THE FLOORS AS TO
PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE FINISH.
ALL CORRIDORS AND AISLEWAYS ARE TO BE KEPT CLEAR
AT ALL TIMES AS OBSTRUCTIONS PRESENT FIRE HAZARD.

TEAM AREA MONITOR:
THE RVAA REQUIRES THAT EACH TEAM HAVE A RESPONSIBLE
ADULT WITH THE CHILDREN IN THE DESIGNATED TEAM AREA AT ALL
TIMES. THE CLEAN UP OF THIS TEAM AREA IS ALSO THE DIRECT
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TEAM AREA MONITORS DURING AND AT
THE CLOSE OF EACH SESSION.
NO BALLOONS, BIKES, ROLLERBLADES, SKATEBOARDS, SKATES,
SCOOTERS, OR PETS WILL BE ALLOWED. VIOLATORS WILL BE
ASKED TO REMOVE THESE ITEMS. NON-COMPLIANCE WILL RESULT
IN MEET DISQUALIFICATION. PLEASE DO NOT BRING DEVICES THAT
REQUIRE AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET.
SMOKING:
SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED WITHIN 100 FEET OF THE SALEM
FAMILY YMCA BUILDINGS.
LOST AND
FOUND: THE RVAA IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.
TEAMS ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN PROPERTY. THE
TEAM AREA MONITOR MUST BE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT(S) AND THE
TEAM AREA MUST BE MONITORED AT ALL TIMES. PERSON(S)
LEAVING THE TEAM’S AREA SHOULD EITHER TAKE THEIR
BELONGINGS WITH THEM OR ASCERTAIN THAT THERE IS A
RESPONSIBLE PERSON IN CHARGE. AT THE END OF THE DAY MAKE
SURE THAT ALL BELONGINGS ARE TEMOVED FROM THE TEAM AREA,
TRASH IS THROWN OUT AND THE AREA IS CLEAN. A TEAM’S FAILURE

Delegates: Read your City County meet invitation carefully.
Coaches: Walk through the YMCA then meet in Studio A.
Host Teams: Before your team can sign up for City County, you must
return the following items at the seeding meeting:
1. RVAA laptop computers.
2. RVAA printers
3. Start Systems and Lighting Detectors.
4. All remaining Monday Night meet ribbons with updated inventory sheet (in
their original Rubbermaid container).
All teams: Bring the following items and complete the following tasks –
1. Preliminary computer printout of official times, consisting of your

meet packet).
2. If you think that a swimmer’s time is incorrect on the printout, you must
bring the swimmer’s actual Monday night meet event card to
substantiate your claim.
3. Remember that all entry times for 100 free and 100 IM must be faster than
cut-off times listed in the RVAA Newsletter.
4. Be prepared to complete the master entry computer forms, which will be
distributed at the seeding meeting.
5. The SignUp Genius Volunteers’ Assignments must be completely filled
and will be checked online at the time of the Seeding meeting. No print
outs required.
6. A check for the team made payable to the RVAA, which consists of $10.00
per swimmer entry fees + an added $25 total team fee for food and
drinks for coaches and officials.

Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association
Annual Irene Hurley Volunteer Award
To honor the service and dedication of Irene Hurley to the RVAA and to the sport
of swimming in the Roanoke Valley, the RVAA delegates established the Annual Irene
Hurley Volunteer Awards in 1996.
These awards honor a lady who had been actively involved in RVAA for over
twenty years, ten or more of which she served as RVAA treasurer. Her service as a
volunteer to the RVAA and to her local pools and teams far exceeded the call of duty.
Her dedication to the RVAA in its formative years as well as her continued involvement
in and service to the RVAA helped build it and sustain it as a successful organization;
likewise, her dedication and service also served as a model for the caliber of volunteer
workers required for the RVAA to continue successfully promoting swimming in the
Roanoke Valley.
Therefore, each team in the RVAA should submit the name of one volunteer who
emulates the qualities, level of dedication, and commitment of Irene Hurley to the RVAA,
to the sport of swimming, and to his or her local pool/team. This volunteer/worker will
receive one of the 1996 Irene Hurley Volunteer Awards.

TYLER NORDGREN TROPHY
NOMINATION FORM
HISTORY
Tyler Nordgren, a member of the Read Mountain swim team, suffered a cerebral
hemorrhage during warm ups for a Monday night meet in July 2001 and died later
that week. His brief swimming career was marked by a drive to improve and the
excitement that comes with competing and winning ribbons. At age 6, Tyler already
had overcome a form of autism that had once required that he attend a school for
the hearing-impaired.
QUALIFICATIONS
A trophy will be awarded at the annual City-County Meet to an 8-and-under
swimmer who embodies the spirit of Tyler Nordgren. Ideally, this trophy will go to
a first- or second-year swimmer who has overcome a challenge, either physical or
developmental, and displayed the kind of enthusiasm for which Tyler was known.
