Cauliflower for
Cancer Prevention
DID
YOU KNOW THAT ONE IN TWO A MERICAN MEN and approximately one in
three American women will develop cancer over their lifetime? These alarming
statistics are provided by the American Cancer Society. Our diet can play
an important role in the prevention of cancer. Eating at least 5 servings of
vegetables and fruits per day is recommended. In particular, cruciferous
vegetables such as Cauliflower, which contain certain compounds, have been
thought to reduce the risk for colorectal cancer-one of the leading cancer sites
in both men and women. Cauliflower not only helps reduce your risk of cancer,
but it is also an excellent source of Vitamin C, high in fiber and low in calories.
A great addition to everyone’s diet!

Financial Challenges
Create Opportunities
JULY
NEW
MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE
FISCAL YEAR at Ocean Mist
Farms. Looking back over the past
year, we have all had to endure some
Phil Taluban,
of the most challenging economic
Chief Financial
Officer
times that many of us have seen:
• Housing prices down 15% year over year
• Dow Jones industrial average down 18% year over year
• Fuel cost increased 40% year over year
• Federal government rescue of Bear Stearns, AIG,
Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac
• Failure of Indy Mac Bank, second largest FDIC
failure in history
• Period of rapid cost increases for most goods and
services
As these economic events were occurring and there
was talk of a recession, here at Ocean Mist Farms we
were able to expand our sales revenues and exceed last
year’s record level. (Unfortunately, due to cost increases
and the payment of one-time charges we were unable
to meet our net income expectations.) While other
companies restructured or downsized, Ocean Mist Farms
did well in these challenging times by staying focused on
our “Core Business” of providing the highest quality and
safest products possible.
As we look ahead, we continue to have concerns over
the world’s economic future but our company’s financial
strength and flexibility will ease some of the impact of this
unrest so we can continue to focus on our future growth.
Below are some planned opportunities for fiscal 2009:
MEXICO INVESTMENT
Through its Mexican partner, Baja Mist, The Company
intends to invest in a cooling and processing facility in
that region, which will enhance our product quality and
operational efficiency.
FOOD SAFETY
The Company has substantially increased its investment in
food safety to ensure that we deliver the safest products
possible.
CAPITAL EXPENDITURES
Our 2009 capital expenditures include renewal of
operating equipment, process improvement projects that
increase efficiency and capacity, and improvements in
technology that increase our productivity.
We can all contribute to the Ocean Mist Farms’
success story by following the three P’s of Business: hire
and retain the best People, implement the most efficient
Processes, and ship our customers the highest quality
and safest Products possible.

the most sought after food served with the help of Chef Tony Baker
from Montrio Bistro, Monterey, CA.
This year will be OMF’s 20th year exhibiting at the PMA
convention in Orlando, Florida. We will debut our new Artichoke
PLU sticker and a 2 count Artichoke Handle Bag. We anticipate
serving over 4,000 plates of food featuring Ocean Mist vegetables
and artichokes. The high number of customer impressions OMF is
able to make within a short window of time is invaluable.

Receives Excellence Award
OCEAN MIST FARMS RECEIVED A 2008
Category Excellence Award from Supermarket News in October.
The retail trade magazine identifies suppliers that are “meeting
retailer needs and the reasons they are best-of-class.” The winners
are chosen by Supermarket News editors based on feedback from
retailers, who voted via a survey and participated in interviews.
For the Fresh Produce category OMF was recognized for:
• MARKETING/PROMOTIONS SUPPORT: In-store product demos and
grower appearances help retailers boost sales of artichokes
• INNOVATION: New packages to boost incremental sales, new
PLU stickers to simplify COOL compliance
It is an honor to be recognized by our retail customers along with
other respected brand names such as Coca-Cola and Kellogg’s
as a category leader. The award encourages our on-going strive
for raising the bar in our marketing efforts and supporting our
customers needs to promote sales.
