Current position Person Identity number Date of birth Sex Telephone (w) Fax Mobile Electronic mail Work address ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 1974: Centaurus High School, Windhoek, Namibia 1975 - 1995: BSc, BSc Hons and HTD (UP) and MSc & PhD (NWU) Short resume I am a C2 rated researcher (re-rated till 2016) by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa, in the field “Conservation and Management of Ecosystems and Biodiversity”. I have been working at the North-West University for the last 23 years, as lecturer, mentor, supervisor and researcher. I have supervised and co-supervised many post-graduate studies (BSc Hons, MSc and PhD) and am the leader of many research and development projects. My fields of expertise include loss in biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, with the emphasize on indicators leading to land degradation and desertification, development of range condition assessment models and restoration/rehabilitation ecology, mainly of aridand semi-arid lands. Data of long term vegetation dynamic studies are used in the construction of simulation models incorporating impacts of climate, different land use 1 patterns and other anthropogenic factors that could change the condition or lead to the management and degradation patterns of rangelands. Simulation models were constructed with counterparts in Germany from the UFZ (Centre for Environmental Research) modelling section in Leipzig, the University of Jena and the University of Goettingen. These models focus on identifying appropriate indicators and to study the impacts of e.g. grazing strategies, fire, bush encroachment/thickening and management actions, regarding the change/loss in biodiversity, especially vegetation cover, density, diversity and composition in different soil types. Adaptive management strategies to ensure better livelihoods for the people using the land are then developed. The models that are constructed to understand the ecological systems and interactions at different spatio-temporal scales, consider the socio-economic circumstances of the land users and communities. Long-term understanding of how ecosystem services are influenced by different impacts are therefore used to make scientifically sound and appropriate Sustainable Land Management (SLM) recommendations for different habitats, management- and land tenure types. The most recent sampling and data analysis techniques to better understand the ecosystem processes are used in all research projects. The extensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the bio-physical and socioeconomic processes that influence the ecosystem services of rangelands in different ecosystems in Southern Africa, has led to the supervision of many National, Regional and International projects. The objectives of these projects include the monitoring and evaluation of existing and the development of new strategies, including the construction of computerized data bases and expert systems, that can be used for DSS (Decision Support Systems) and consulting tools for future decision making. By using Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) and Participatory Action Research (PAR) approaches, efforts are made to bridge the gap between scientists, extension, environmental managers, land users and policy makers in the different research and development (R&D) projects. All projects incorporate local and indigenous knowledge that, together with scientifically sound knowledge, are used in awareness, training and capacity building initiatives for different stakeholders involved in the use and management of land. Many projects therefore have a Research and Development (R&D) component that includes the capacity building of all stakeholders, especially at the higher decision levels. Most projects are carried out in the former disadvantaged communities of the rural areas of Southern Africa, and include the development of practical, easy to use, local level monitoring and assessment guidelines/manuals to make sustainable land management decisions over the long-term. All projects involve the use of remote sensing technologies to identify suitable sites and get a better understanding of the dynamics of the natural resources that are driven by various impacts in the different habitats and under various management strategies. The involvement in the education, training and capacity building of learners, students, managers and extension officers in agriculture, conservation and the environmental services is one of the main factors in all projects. I have made presentations at international conferences and workshops in more than 29 countries (mainly on invitation) and have been appointed as National Coordinator of Internationally funded projects, such as the Desert Margins Program (DMP) funded by GEF (Global Environment Facility) that was carried out in 9 African countries in West- East and Southern Africa (2009-2011), developed the National Baseline study (2013) for the Kalahari Namib Project (KNP) which is carried out in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (20122015), funded by GEF and executed by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). I was the National Coordinator for the PRACTICE project (Prevention and Restoration Actions to Combat Desertification. An Integrated Assessment), which was carried out in 12 countries of the world and was funded by the EC (European Commission) (2011-2013), developed restoration and rangeland management technologies for the UNDPGEF (United Nations Development Program–Global Environmental Facility) project in 2 Botswana, carried out several mid-term and terminal evaluations of internationally funded, multi-national projects and programs implemented by UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) (e.g. LADA – Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands) and project leader of a the restoration project that was funded by the National Geographic Conservation Trust of the USA (2011). I serve on the evaluation panels for the National Government (DEA – Department of Environmental Affairs and DAFF – Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) and the NRF (National Research Foundation) in South Africa, mainly regarding land degradation, desertification, restoration/rehabilitation ecology and the Sustainable Management of the Land (SLM). I have been on the Roster of Experts for Natural Resource Management and am the Science and Technology Correspondent (STC) for South Africa at the UNCCD (UN Convention to Combat Desertification) for the last 10 years, and have represented the Government of South Africa (DEA & DAFF) at many International Conferences regarding land degradation and desertification, including several COPs (Conferences of Parties) of the UNCCD (in the capacity of STC) (2009 – 2013) and was invited to represent and make contributions to IPBES (Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) in Busan, Korea (2010) and the E-DLDD workshop in Bonn (2010) (Economics in Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought). I also represented UNEP at COP 8 in Madrid in 2007. I was the Chairperson of the CST Bureau (Committee on Science and Technology) for the UNCCD on a global scale till October 2011, also representing the African continent in the CST Bureau. I was recently elected (2012) to serve as Co-chair on the Advisory Group for the Provision of Scientific Advice on DLDD issues (AGSA) for the UNCCD (DLDD – Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought). Only 12 experts from the world served on the AGSA group. The final report of AGSA was presented to COP 11 of the UNCCD in Windhoek in September 2013. I have done many consultancies regarding land degradation, desertification, restoration/rehabilitation and the management of rangelands in Southern Africa, including SLM projects, in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, projects for IUCN (Kalahari-Namib), DAFF (e.g. LandCare, Fixmove – Fixed Point Monitoring of Vegetation, developed the LLM – Local Level Monitoring manual), DEA (e.g. National Action Program (NAP) for the UNCCD in South Africa and the SANParks. I collaborate with many scientists from other countries, such as the UK, Germany, China, Australia, Switzerland, USA, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya and several countries in Africa. I have made about 50 presentations at congresses, symposia, workshops and meetings for the last 10 years in at least 20 countries globally (mostly on invitation). Due to my outstanding achievements, I have been selected by the editors to be included in the Marquis Who’s Who in Sciences and Engineering edition of 2006-2007 and 2008 - 2009. In 2007, I was selected as one of the top 10% and in 2009 and 2010 as one of the top 20% researchers at the North-West University in South Africa. In my position as lecturer and supervisor, I strive to train, capacitate and develop young scientists and practitioners that can serve the community in agriculture, conservation and other related environmental fields. 4. Research outputs The most important aims of my career include awareness, training and capacity building, as well as the participation in research and development projects on national and international level (see below).
