The Scoop
Lady Pilot Letterpress was born out of a deep love
for archaic machinery and a sarcastic wit that just
won’t quit. No really, owner Emily Wismer can’t
stop being sarcastic and is incredibly lucky that
she can make a living with this venerable skill.
We are proud to do everything for Lady Pilot in
house, from design, to printed product, to carefully
packaging our cards to ship to over 150 stores in
the United States and internationally.

LADY PILOT
What’s in a name? A quick explanation of Lady Pilot...
The Lady Pilot moniker comes from a combination of three things, (and a conversation with my good
friend, Ben McLeod, who pointed these things out). The first press I ever bought, at a flea market in
Ypsilanti, Michigan, was a tabletop Pilot press. My first name is Emily, similar to Amelia, and Amelia
Earhart, who is a hero of mine. And finally, singer and songwriter Neko Case has a lovely song called,
“Lady Pilot,” which might just be about a particular fearlessness. Oh, and our logo, which we love, was
designed by the talented Brandon Mise of Blue Barnhouse.

One of our favorite stories...
This card was found on a softball field in New York City, by a high school friend. He sent me
the images to let me know how amazing it was to see an object made by someone he knows,
used by people to express love for each other. I love it because it is very easy to forget that
the things you make have a life after they leave your shop, and that the reason for making
cards, even when they’re snarky, is the space they allow for communication between people
who care about each other. It thrills me to think that a piece of paper I hand feed into a
century-old press will go somewhere, make someone I’ve never met happy, maybe make them
closer to another human being. It’s a pretty awesome reason to be a printer.
