Colour of the Month
The summer’s hottest colour is superfruity lime green – it’s everywhere,
from a dash in your mineral water
to bright Tupperware tops.
Just a hint of it can have a
huge impact, but, while less
is more, that shouldn’t
limit you to candles and
cushions. Try a limegreen occasional chair
or sofa and feed the
theme throughout
the room with photo
frames and vases

Suite summer dreams from Natuzzi Italia
Are you often daydreaming about a
good night’s sleep? You don’t have to
wait much longer – Natuzzi Italia will
soon be launching brand new bedroom,
dining and sofa collections in the
UAE. Interestingly, it’s the company’s
first foray into the bedroom, and they
do not disappoint. The Italian label,
renowned for its contemporary living
room models, has called upon the
expertise of Manzoni and Tapinassi
from Studio Memo, and Claudio Bellini,
who are responsible for the company’s
flagship living room furniture. Smooth,
sensual lines prevail, with neutral
and monochrome colours. There’s a
nod to the 1950s, too, with tapered
legs and quilted headboards dressing
most models in a retro-modern look.

Designer Spotlight
Woolly seats in this weather?
Why the garden is still the place to be, thanks to Paola Lenti
Despite the humid evenings, outdoor furniture sales aren’t
slowing down. Paola Lenti is a prominent leader in the
luxury outdoor furniture market, a position her company
has held for two decades. Universally, she’s become an
instant reference point for high-quality seating and rugs,
designed in the company’s signature shapes, colours and
materials.
“In fact, Dubai is one of Paola Lenti’s strongest markets
worldwide,” says Laurence Dehlen, regional sales manager
at Purity, the only UAE distributor appointed by the Italian
designer. So, why does Paola Lenti stand out from the
crowd?
‡
Unlike the Gulf’s mainstay material of rattan for
outdoor furniture, she’s well known for her use of wool
felt. But how does wool fare in the rain and harsh sun?
‡
Constant experimentation with materials and
manufacturing ensures durable, weather-resistant and
shape-preserving products. Only the best yarns, skilled
craftsmen and the latest technology are considered.
‡
Her seating designs are extremely versatile: they are
characterised by simple geometric shapes and bright
colours, namely fuchsia, indigo and lime. Colour really
is key in all of her collections.
“The product is able to withstand the harsh weather
conditions here, making it a perfect choice for clients that
want something to last,” adds Laurence. “It’s extremely
bhomes.com
sophisticated and works well in Dubai’s luxury market, as
no other outdoor furniture brands compare.” How have her
designs evolved in the twenty years she’s been established?
“The fabrics have changed the most, and although the
basic rope element is still the main finish, the colours
and braiding of this rope have changed dramatically,” he
says. “She is a pioneer in the development of textures and
colours.”
For 2014, Paola Lenti launched In the Key of Colour,
a bright collection that featured new poufs in one of her
trademark materials, Rope T, with two colours of the Rope
cord woven together to create a spiral-like pattern. Even
the new lime-green side tables feature a Rope handle in the
centre of the tabletop, making the piece increasingly tactile
and mobile.
“While her outdoor collection is certainly the most
popular, we also receive many requests for her indoor
furnishings,” says Laurence. “More recently, people are
interested in the incredible outdoor pavilion collection
that has been launched.” The Pavilion, a modular shading
structure – like an abstract gazebo – is perfect for the
summer months. After extensive research, the fabric for the
sides and canopy is translucent yet UV-resistant, catering
to the demands of the weather as well as social occasions,
enabling those sheltered inside to look out from all angles.

A small change

This design-orientated family show
us round their ever-changing apartment
You can tell Merete Broen is in the interior
design business. Through the open door, past
her beaming smile and her two beautiful blonde
daughters, we can see the dining table is neatly
laid for six, large throw cushions lay strategically
on the living room floor, and sliced fresh fruits
and chunky sandwiches wait on the coffee table.
Their apartment on Palm Jumeirah is ready
for the photo shoot. Soon, the ladies of the house
will be ready too. Five-year-old Estelle has to

I love updating
the apartment,
it’s fun and the
kids love it too
You can tell Merete Broen is in the
interior design business. Through the
open door, past her beaming smile and
her two beautiful blonde daughters, we
can see she’s set the scene for an idyllic
family lunch. The dining table is neatly
laid for six, ambient lighting glows
from all corners, and sliced fresh fruits
and chunky sandwiches wait on the
coffee table. While their three-bedroom
apartment on Palm Jumeirah is ready
for the photo shoot, five-year-old Estelle
has to change her dress first – she
didn’t like the stripy blue-and-white
one mum had picked out. We’re not
allowed to see her bedroom yet, she
says, disappearing behind the door. Not
until it’s ready.
A few minutes later, Estelle bounds
onto the balcony in a pretty pink party
dress while her older sister Maline,
seven, brings our photographer Helen
a delightfully frothy cappuccino. Their
Danish mum playfully scoops them
into the cosy snug outside, padded
with blue and yellow floor cushions
left over from her last colour scheme –
bright outdoors and metallic indoors.
Snacking on toasted corn kernels and
reading children’s pony books with
their mum, the kids are naturals in
front of the camera.
“We spend a lot of time outside when
it’s not too hot,” says Merete. “We
love being outside: my husband likes
to go mountain biking and the girls
love camping in the desert, sleeping in
tents and cooking marshmallows on
the barbecue.” It’s easy to see why they
enjoy their large balcony. It has a great
view from the Shoreline apartment,
looking out past the trunk, over the
bhomes.com
rooftops of new
villas, and across
the blue coastline.
Getting restless
in the heat, Estelle
announces that
her bedroom is
ready and leads
the way. It’s pink
and purple with
Little Mermaid’s
Ariel painted on
the wall, looking
over the princessstyle bed, topped
with a pretty lace
canopy. “Look,
here’s my TV,” she
shows me, pulling
back the cabinet
door. Showing
my age, I ask if The Little Mermaid
is her favourite video – oops – I mean
DVD. “No, it’s Frozen,” she says, in
chorus with her mum. “And Elsa is
my favourite character.” What’s your
favourite colour, I ask, looking at the
pink walls. “Blue. I want a light blue
bedroom.”
Then Maline races in to see where
Helen is – she’s not camera-shy at all.
We’re lured next door into her bedroom
and it’s easy to see that Estelle looks
up to her big sister, who’s tidy bedroom
is light blue. Maline loves reading and
has lots of books – she asks if I’ve read
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I’ll put it on my
reading list, I assure her.
The kids tumble around on the bed,
much to the annoyance of Rusty the
cat, who was curled up contentedly
in a beam of warm sunlight. They’re
excited about
their horse riding
lesson in an hour,
so we let them
get ready: Helen
continues to shoot
the contemporary
apartment while I
talk to their mum.
On our way to
sit at the expertly
laid dining table,
we pass a family
photomontage
hanging in the
hallway, within a
large gilt picture
frame. “The photos
show both girls
from birth,” says
Merete. Quite
literally, too, as
she points to a
minute-old Maline,
with umbilical cord
23
still attached. “We take pictures of the
girls with our friends and family every
time they come to see us, so we can
show the girls who they are when they
next visit. It’s a great way for them to
remember the people close to us, when
we don’t live near them or see them
very often.”
Merete and her Dutch husband
Patrick van Ijzendoorn, co-founders
of Zen Interiors, moved to Dubai 20
years ago, two years after they met in
England while studying and training
for careers in hotel management.
Soon after graduating, they watched a
television programme about Dubai and
thought, “why not?”, fancying a change
from chilly Britain. They could always
buy a return ticket if they didn’t like
it, they said. I don’t need to tell you
that was the first and last time return
tickets were mentioned.
Since then, they’ve rented in
every community: Mirdif, Desert
Springs, Karama... But when a client
approached Zen Interiors to redesign
an apartment in Shoreline Residences,
the couple knew they’d finally found a
place to call home. “When we started
his project we realised there were
some lovely properties here,” says the
interior designer. “Shortly after, I fell
pregnant with Estelle and we thought it
would be a nice place for the children.
I took the pram to the park and the
beach, and we would swim and pick up
shells. It’s also near the showroom on
Sheikh Zayed and the girls’ school. It’s
very convenient and we’re very relaxed
and happy here.”
As with most homeowners, they want
to make some structural changes to
the kitchen and bathrooms – that’s the
next project on the agenda. “We haven’t
had time yet but I want to open the
kitchen up and create one large space
within the living room,” she explains.
July 2014
“I’d like to change the bathroom tiles,
too, which are standard from Nakheel,
and buy some lovely Bagno sanitary
ware. When we bought the apartment
we moved in straight away and
furnished the place in just five days. Of
course, it wasn’t too difficult because
we had the tailors and furniture on
hand at Zen Interiors; it was a huge
advantage.
“I try to update the décor every
year – I don’t tell my husband,” she
laughs. “If I tell him beforehand he’ll
sigh, “oh, not again,” so he comes home
and everything will be done.” Despite
this, I can see he’s got some say – and
good taste, too – looking around the
masculine master bedroom, which
is furnished with leather wingback
armchairs, a huge bed, handscraped
wooden floorboards and a neutral
colour palette. “He lives with seven
ladies so he needs a masculine space,”
says his wife, including the live-in
maid and two pet cats in that number.
“I love making new cushion designs,
bedspreads and headboards, and having
a new sofa,” she continues. “I also like
to try what we get for the store, and
test the comfort and quality. I think
that’s very important.”
The turquoise-and-white sofa
cushions are Merete’s own designs.
She shares them with her tailors who
make them to order. The splash of aqua
is part of the new colour scheme she
introduced six months ago, along with
the sofa, also from Zen Interiors. She
and Patrick travel frequently to source
furniture for clients and the showroom
on Sheikh Zayed Road, near Mall of the
Emirates, visiting Indonesia and East
Asia in particular. The hand-carved
picture frame displaying the girls’ photo
montage is from Box Living, made
in Indonesia, loyal suppliers of Zen
Interiors since its inception 11 years
ago. The side tables, coffee table and
lamps in the living room are also from
Zen Interiors, while the TV cabinet and
dining table are from Polyform in Italy.
“I like to keep the tone of the
furniture neutral and add colour with
candles, cushions and art,” she says.
“It’s a really cost-effective way to
change your colour scheme without
replacing furniture. I love updating the
apartment, it’s a lot of fun and the kids
love it as well. I really should change
the girls’ bedrooms soon as it’s been
awhile. The trouble is, when they see
the lovely children’s bedrooms we’ve
done at work they want those designs.
I try not to show them too many photos
or else they’d want new bedrooms all
the time.” I wonder where they get that
inclination from, I laugh.
Just before we leave, the kids run
towards us after a suspiciously quiet
ten minutes and hold out two pretty
pictures they’ve drawn – a truly lovely
way to remember a very happy family.

Buying guide… to air conditioners
Too hot? Too cold? Get it just right with this helpful guide
Some nights we go from needing blankets and bed socks to
wearing nothing at all. If your air con levels are fluctuating,
now might be the time to look at renewing the system. A
good AC unit controls more than just the temperature –
it aids hygiene, comfort levels, sleep, and your all-round
wellbeing at home.
How does it work?
Our glass-fronted homes are like greenhouses under the
blazing summer sun. Air conditioning units reduce the
temperature inside by sucking in hot air over an evaporator
that acts like a very cold refrigerant. Once cooled, the air is
blown back out into the room. If your air con doesn’t feel cool
enough the evaporator may be damaged through use, or the
filter may need cleaning. Half of AC complaints are simply
due to clogged filters. Most of us have a split system where
a large weatherproof condenser unit sits outside while a
smaller, discreet unit fits inside. Top tip: set your AC to 24°C
while you’re out. This is the perfect temperature to prevent
condensation misting the windows and spreading damp.
How much power?
Many factors affect the unit’s power: not just the heat
outside and the size of the room, but the computer equipment
and the number of people in that room – we give off heat,
too, remember. The unit will have to work harder when any
one of these factors increase. Cooling power is measured in
Watts or BTUs/h (British Thermal Units). The rule of thumb
is roughly 40W per cubit metre or four BTUs per cubic foot,
to cool a room. 10,000BTUs equates to approximately 3kW.
Is the air clean?
Believe it or not, it can be more polluted
inside than out. Although you can’t see
them, the air inside our homes is full of dust
particles, sand, smoke, pollen and bacteria.
Opening a window helps, but that’s not so easy in the
city, and will undo all the hard work of your AC unit. An air
purifier is air con’s best friend. There are three filter types:
1. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are the
pricier option but remove 99% of airborne particles.
2. Electrostatic filters clean the air using static electricity
to ‘stick’ particles to the filter. This is cheaper and
quieter, but may not be as efficient.
3. Photocatalytic filters remove 99.99% of pollutants but
are not so commonly used. They deactivate germs by
breaking down the molecular structure to eliminate
toxic gases and odours.
Why is it humid inside?
It should be a little humid – surprisingly, our homes should
have a comfortable humidity level of between 40% and 60%.
However, rooms often suffer from condensation as the cool
air inside battles with the hot air outside. Unsightly mildew
can suddenly pop up on damp textiles, like cushions and
shoes – and no one wants to go to work with a mouldy foot.
Many homes will benefit from a dehumidifier, which draws
excess moisture out of the air. While they can be noisy, they
automatically switch off when the tank fills up so you can
leave the house and let it hum.

BoConcept
“How can I achieve a simple and stylish look using monochromatic colours?”
Adrienne Calder, Jumeirah Park
Less is more, advises Nina Marguerite
Avalo, project manager at BoConcept
Monochromatic furnishings are
contemporary, stylish, clean and
minimalistic. Don’t be confused with
monochrome where everything is
black-and-white; with monochromatic,
the scheme will feature one or two
colours throughout the whole room,
colour-matching walls, furniture and
accessories in a single colour at the
extreme end, or two or three colours
for a less dramatic look. Either way,
you don’t need a lot to make the theme
look amazing. This is why it is quite an
easy style for a customer to implement,
because adding or changing just a few
items will make a big difference to the
overall look.
Let’s say you have a living room with
a simple layout, with a white sofa, a
couple surrounding colours like blue or
dark green, and some walnut wood in
the coffee table or bookshelf. Adding
natural colours, such as the wood, to a
theme of blue and green will make such
a difference and add warmth to the
aqua palette.
When we look at the colours you can
use for a monochromatic style, focus
on plain colours and not too many
patterns. However, it all depends on
your taste, style and fashion. If you
prefer a simple style then you can
add just a few extra items to create
different eye-catching focal points in
the room. An effective monochromatic
design is achieved through a simple
yet elegant style. Basic colours like
grey, black or white will always team
well with a brighter shade. Grey is
the easiest colour to use as a base and
team with brighter colours, although
black follows a similar principle. This is
because grey tones soften bright colours
and creates a calm feel throughout the
room. In contrast, black is dramatic
while white is clean and contemporary.
Adding walnut wood to grey and black
will add warmth to the scheme.
In the bedroom, you should have
calm colours rather than bright hues,
so it’s relaxing and soothing to the
eye. This will help you sleep well, too.
You don’t need to fill this room with
too much furniture, either: keep the
necessary items like a bed, wardrobe
and dressing table, rather than things
that are not needed in a bedroom. Dark
curtains against a pale colour on the
walls, such as yellow, will keep the
light out but let your room feel bright
and refreshing. Yellow candles and
cushions will complete this cosy feel. In
the living room, focus on basic furniture
like a sofa bed, armchairs and dining
table (in grey and walnut), and start to
build your scheme from there. Finish
with accessories in the brighter colour
of your chosen palette – the brighter
the better in a spacious living area.

Don’t be afraid of colour, says Nataliya
Yordanova, head designer at IDdesign UAE
Clean-lined furnishings, wooden details
and a white colour palette clearly
identify Scandinavian design. These
features mix together to produce an
appearance that is contemporary,
organic and suggestive of the natural
world. Metallic accessories, eyecatching patterns, splashes of citrus
accents and handmade touches finish
off a Scandinavian-inspired space.
These days, the living room is the
interior space of choice. You should
strive to select furniture with clean
lines, as this is a signature trademark
of Scandinavian design: angular sofas
with low backs and square armrests
often featured in Scandinavian-style
homes.
Even though the furniture is
contemporary and chic, this does not
mean it has to be short on comfort.
Don’t leather sofas look cushy
enough to sleep on? Complement the
Scandinavian style with a leather sofa
in monochrome colours, raised off
the floor by a metal frame or legs. An
undeniable concentration on geometry
bhomes.com
“My spacious apartment would look great with
a clean Scandinavian look – where do I start?”
Hugo Stricht, Dubai Marina
typically accompanies the clean lines of
Scandinavian pieces.
A lot of Scandinavian furnishings
boast a mid-century modern feel as
well. Designers such as Eero Saarinen
and Arne Jacobsen have produced
many iconic chairs from that era that
epitomise the look. They’re designed
with the principle that ‘form follows
function’; so they’re ergonomic and
practical while being sharp in style.
If you are a fan of form from the
1950s and 1960s, go for furnishings
that represent these decades – perhaps
items raised off the floor with tapered
legs, bevelled wooden edges, bold
patterns and splashes of pastel pink
and green.
A lot of Scandinavian houses feature
natural wooden elements, from flooring
to interior trim and specific details
on furniture. If you want to add an
immediate sense of Nordic nature
without committing to a large purchase,
look for wooden accessories, such as
surface-top bowls on the coffee table
or serving platters in the kitchen. This
adds an organic, natural element in an
everyday space.
Do not be afraid of colour. White
interiors and warm wooden touches are
definite components of Scandinavian
design, but so is accenting with bold
colour. Vibrant throw pillows in citrus
hues are a sure-fire way to create a
warm and inviting space. Mix these
colours with interesting patterns, such
as checkered cushions or chevron rugs.
Eye-catching wall art is another good
way to introduce colour.
Polish off your Scandinavian-inspired
space with metallic accents. In fact,
metal framework is a frequent feature
of Scandinavian furnishings – take
note of the metal sofa legs, chair backs
and lamp stands in shop vignettes of
Scandinavian interiors. Silver bowls,
picture frames and drawer knobs will
complement the furniture and tie the
room together.

Happy Birthday!
This year we’re wishing the pioneers of design many happy returns
In the art world, it’s widely recognised
that posthumous work is big money.
And it’s no different in the design
realm. When we think of world-famous
collectible furniture designers, who
springs to mind? Eero Saarinen,
Charles and Ray Eames, Arne
Jacobsen, Ludvig Mies van der Rohe,
Hans Wegner, Eileen Grey, Poul
Henningsen, Ernest Race, Isamu
Noguchi, Verner Panton… There’s
a veritable museum of 20th century
designers rattling around in my head.
This year celebrates a number of
ancient birthdays. Industrial designer
Christopher Dresser was born 180
years ago on July 4, Henningsen would
have been 120 and Noguchi 110, while
chair lovers around the world are
celebrating the late Wegner’s centenary.

The Lighting Pioneer
If there’s one word that truly describes
Poul Henningsen (1894 – 1967), it’s
‘pioneer’. And it’s certainly deserved,
too. In a world where we take light
for granted, from back-lit kitchen
cabinets to the dazzling Vegas strip,
it’s hard to think of a time when the
common light bulb didn’t exist. In the
1870s Thomas Edison revolutionised
household lighting with the invention
of the incandescent light bulb, doing
away with the oil lamp. This was a
huge turning point in history and for
design. Hereafter, the bulb proved to
be Henningsen's muse. He worked on
diffusing the glare of the bare bulb
after his mother complained about the
harsh effect that electric light had on
her face when she applied her makeup
in the mirror. Mrs Henningsen's vanity
brings to mind the famous phrase,
'behind every great man stands a
great woman'... Interested in creating
glare-free lights, and recreating the
warmth of the familiar oil lamp,
his shades consist of multiple
layers that direct light
horizontally and vertically.
In 1925 he teamed
with Louis Poulsen to
manufacture the classic
PH Lamp shade, which
layers three rings around
the bulb for a warmer,
uniform distribution
of light. PH Artichoke,
pictured, has eight tiers
for increased diffusion.
The original three layers
remain the basis for light
shades today – look at the
contemporary designs by
Yoshimi Kono, who uses the
same principle. Ninety years later
the design is still functional and its
aesthetic is far from outdated.
Dressing Up Décor
Christopher Dresser (1834 – 1904)
was quite the revolutionary. The Scot
championed the reform of design in
the 19th century, especially within
decorative arts and ornaments, by
embracing modern manufacturing
methods for arts and crafts. Today,
he may not be as famous as his 20th
FHQWXU\SHHUVEXWKHZDVDSUROLÀF
designer and academic in his day.
During four months in 1876/’77, he
travelled 2,000 miles around Japan and
was treated as a guest of the nation
by the Emperor, while he made his
impressions of the country. A couple
of years later, he made 1,000 ceramic
pots in just three years. His pioneering
studies of Japanese art are evident in
much of his textiles, metalwork and
ceramics. Furthermore, we can thank
Dresser for Anglo-Japanese-style
teapots, which have come back into
fashion this year. The one pictured was
made two centuries ago, in 1879.

Sculpting Design
Last month I was in New York for business, and
made it a point to visit Isamu Noguchi’s iconic
Red Cube sculpture (1968), which looms outside
the HSBC Building (Marine Building in Noguchi's
day). Leaning in to its sloping sides, I sought its
FRROVKDGRZLQWKHFLW\KHDWDQGVWRSSHGWRUHÁHFW
on the artist's lifetime achievements.
Noguchi (1904 – 1988) is famous for saying: "To
limit yourself to a particular style may make you
an expert of that particular viewpoint or school,
but I do not wish to belong to any school. I am
always learning, always discovering." As one of the
most versatile designers of his day (which actually
spanned six decades) he certainly lived by this
statement.
The Japanese-American artist successfully
produced pottery, abstract art, brush paintings,
stonework, and even portrait busts for celebrities,
but it’s his sculptural furniture designs and works
for public spaces that we continue to remember
him by. In the furniture world, he’s famous for the
iconic Noguchi table, which made waves in 1947
due to its function as ‘sculpture for use’. When
production ceased in 1973 it became an instant
collectible. From where did this biomorphic
design spring? With hindsight, there’s no doubt
a collaboration between George Nelson, Paul
/iV]OyDQG&KDUOHV(DPHVZLWKSUROLÀFIXUQLWXUH
manufacturer Herman Miller Inc. at the helm,
was going to be anything but revolutionary. In
IDFWLWOHGWRRQHRIWKHPRVWLQÁXHQWLDOFROOHFWLRQV
of modern furniture ever produced.
His work still lives on – the Noguchi table was
reintroduced in 1984 and has never looked back,
Knoll continues to produce his lamp designs, the
Noguchi Museum pays unending homage in New
York City, and many sculptures stand proud in
public spaces around the world.
The Master Chair Maker
Hans Wegner (1914 – 2007) was
nicknamed The Master Chair Maker
IRUDYHU\JRRGUHDVRQWKHSUROLÀF
cabinetmaker and furniture designer
amassed a classic chair collection
exceeding 500, many of which are now
collectors’ items and museum pieces.
If you’re not familiar with the late
Dane’s chairs (or even revered classics
by Eames and Panton) pull up a stylish
seat in the ikonhouse showroom on
SZR, the only retailer in Dubai with
such originals. Dorian Pauwels, partner
and executive director at ikonhouse,
highlights Wegner’s Wishbone Chair
as a true classic. “The Wishbone chair
is a centrepiece for Carl Hansen &
Son because his career started with
that chair,” he explains. “It translates
everything he believed in when making
a chair: functionality and durability.”
After approaching the manufacturer
with the ambitious design in 1949, a
then cash-strapped Holger Hansen
cycled for a whole day to visit Hans’
family home and learn more about
the intriguing idea. Looking at the
Wishbone, you’ll see that no piece
is straight – a hard feat to achieve
using a hard wood at 6% humidity, a
factor Hans insisted on. Furniture is
often made with wood saturated with
30% moisture. But once taken to a
conditioned home, this wood should
reach equilibrium of around 8%,
therefore drying and ‘shrinking’ in the
joins, making the item wobbly for the
user. “At 6%, this wouldn’t happen,”
explains Dorian.“Wegner knew

joins, so the wood had to be dry. For
him, it had to be perfect.” The advanced
process of steam bending produced the
curves of the chair – even the back,
which is plywood. This sloping back
SDQHOLVGLIÀFXOWIRUSHRSOHWRFRS\DQG
provides tell-tale signs if it's a replica.
“The seat is simply raw paper –
nothing fancy,” continues Dorian,
who held a celebratory design talk
with Carl Hansen & Son's CEO Knud
Erik Hansen earlier in the year. “It’s
readily available, too, so it’s cheap.
It will also last an eternity, unlike
rattan, which dries after a decade or
so. This is what minimalism is all
about: form following function. It has

doesn’t need to change. This is why the
chair remains so inspiring today.”

Hot topic:
SWIMMING POOLS
Keep afloat of the best styles and important safety measures
The dog days of summer are here. When it’s 45
degrees outside, the cool blue of the swimming
pool is the air con of the garden. Thanks to
effective heat-and-cooling systems, swimming
pools needn’t be full of bath water in the summer
but a welcoming oasis in the desert heat. For
some homeowners, however, gardens are little
more than a sandpit when they move in. Such
a versatile canvas allows buyers to create the
garden of their dreams. The next couple of
months are a popular time of year to install and
landscape pools, ready for the cooler months.
Completion dates depend on the type and size of
the swimming pool you want, so choose now and
plan ahead.
For the homeowner...
“For me, a garden is empty without a swimming
pool,” says Miguel Avila, project director at
Toscana Landscaping & Pools, based in Al Quoz.
“In Dubai, around 85% of our projects have a pool.
It should be the main feature, followed by the
living and dining area, plants and then materials.”
There are three main types of in-ground pool to
choose from: concrete, vinyl liner and fibreglass
liner. All three are popular in Dubai, and the
decision usually depends on budget and whether
you own or rent. “Concrete is more robust and
durable,” says Miguel. “They can be custom-made
according to the size and shape of the garden, and
customised with beautiful glass windows, mosaic
35
tiles and water
features. This
is an attractive
option for a
homeowner.”
No plot is too
small, either;
Miguel oversaw
the landscaping
of a compact fourmetre wide garden
in Arabian Ranches,
constructing a long blacktiled pool with a cascading water
feature, pergola, planting and lighting.
When it comes to landscaping and furniture,
taking the ‘inside out’ is a huge interior design
trend in the UAE. “Outdoor living space is very
important,” confirms Miguel. “Having a dining
area is particularly popular, with a barbecue area
or pizza oven under a pergola where the family
can sit and enjoy the garden. In this country,
entertaining in the garden is an integral part of
our lifestyle and a big part of the day.”
If you’re renting...
Of course, if you’re renting, you may not want to
invest in a concrete swimming pool. A liner pool is
a cost-effective – and mobile – solution. Concrete
pools can take approximately 70 working days to
install while a liner pool is much quicker, installed
in just 14, say the experts at Oasis Dreams,
specialising in French vinyl-liner brand Waterair.
Unsurprisingly, French expats favour Waterair
– the in-ground liner measures 4x7metres and
is available readymade from AED65,000. During
installation, simply layer screed or stabilising
sand across the dugout area. The liner fits around
a steel structure that hugs the perimeter, and
pressure from the water flattens the liner against
the floor and sides. To finish, a coping border fits
around the edge of the pool and can be landscaped
into patio, paving, grass or decking.
The added beauty of a liner pool is that you can
take it with you if you move house – an attractive
option for renters. You can splash around in liner
pools for several years, too – you’ll find warranties
that can cover the structure for 20 years and the
liner for 12. That’s a lot of splash-happy summers.
Another liner option, fibreglass, is factorymoulded into a bowl-shape shell. A crane then
lowers and sets the shell into an excavated hole in
the garden. Sizes and shapes can be limiting, but
the main advantage is speed: these pools can be
installed in just a few days.
Don’t forget safety
Every year, there are tragic news reports of
children needlessly drowning in swimming pools.
Safety is paramount, and must not be overlooked
when pools are installed, or when you move house.
Don’t trust the previous resident to have thought
of everything.
There are two main safety options: nets and
fences. Fences have self-closing lock systems and
can be fitted in a range of materials, including
glass, aluminium, wood or mesh. Costs vary,
bhomes.com
depending on the pool size and material – glass
can cost around AED1,500 to AED2,000 per
square metre, so it’s not cheap. However, while the
mandatory height of 1.2 metres is a deterrent for
babies and toddlers, it’s not such a high obstacle
for young children.
“By far and away, a pool net is my top
recommendation,” says Ashley McKercher director
at Aquanet Dubai. “And I say that as a mum,
having seen it tried and tested by my own kids
when they were younger. With fences, the mesh
is the safest option as kids can’t climb over it like
they can a solid fence – they will try though, it’s
what kids do. But a net guarantees that a child
won't drown, even if they fall onto the pool facefirst.” Safety nets are stretched taught across the
pool and won't slacken if a baby or toddler falls
onto it while they’re running around the edge. It's
guaranteed to keep them off the water’s surface.
Nets are available in blue or black and are easily
removed in a couple of minutes, when they can be
stowed away on a discreet storage roller.
For added peace of mind, an alarm can be
fitted onto the net and the portable receiver can
be carried around the house. “The more layers of
safety you have, the better,” concludes Ashley.
“Nothing is more important than keeping an eye
on your child.”

SCHOOL’S OUT!
Encourage your kids to get crafty at home – who knows where it will lead
Don’t let your kids get hot and bothered
with boredom over the school summer
holidays. While the freedom is exciting
at first, children can soon grow restless
in the hot weather without the routine
of classroom activities.
If you’re staying in the UAE for the
summer break, it’s possible to create a
home that’s just as stimulating and fun.
Is your child the next Damien Hirst
or Steve Jobs? A crafty corner will
keep them glued to the drawing board
for hours, and you shouldn’t dismiss
their ideas as mere child’s play... as BH
found out.
How to… create a
crafty corner
The team at Caboodle play centre in
Dubai Mall and Citywalk, Jumeirah,
certainly know how to have fun with
children. Better Homes Magazine asked
managing director Hind Abdulrazak if
it’s hard to keep children entertained
over the summer. “It certainly can
be,” she laughs. “Children tend to
have shorter attention spans and need
different activities in order to stay
stimulated.”
Creative challenges, such as beading
jewellery, making paper hats and
decorating treasure chests, will help
develop your kids’ social and mental
skills, especially if you join in the fun.
Hind says arts and crafts are a great
way to encourage learning through
traditional means of play. “Simple
crafts can be made with readily
available household items,” she
explains. “Cereal boxes can be recycled
to create a whole host of crafts. The list
is endless.” Cut the top of a cereal box
off, she suggests, decorate with paints,
stickers and glitter, and use the pretty
box as a folder to store artwork in. Or
decorate short, narrow strips to use as
personalised bookmarks. This is a great
gift idea that kids can independently
make for family and friends.
“A small egg carton is the perfect
shape for a treasure chest,” she
continues. “Keep a stockpile of coloured
paper, glue, glitter and metallic pens
and encourage supervised shape cutting
and gluing. Some sticky-backed gems
would finish off the treasure chest
beautifully.”
How can parents make a stimulating
craft corner at home? “A theme works
wonders for young imaginations,” she
says. “Some of our themes include Sea
Life Saturdays, Safari Sundays, and
Monster Mondays. Whatever they
make, be sure to pin it up on the wall
for a truly authentic craft corner.”

OLLA self-assembly furniture; inset: Ole and Ella Otterstedt
How to… turn play
into a business
Who knows where such crafty
creativity will lead... For one family in
Arabian Ranches, an in-demand startup company is going from strength to
strength off the back of an innovative
idea from an eight-year-old boy.
Proving that kids really are the
brains of the family, Ole Otterstedt
– now nine – sketched his own
ideas for bedroom furniture, after
a disappointing shopping trip in
search of a new desk and chair. What
did Lego-obsessed Ole want? Lego
furniture, of course! His dad Jens saw
the sketches and knew his son had
had a light-bulb idea.
The prototype desk and chair now
sit proudly in Ole’s bedroom. “My old
furniture was boring,” says the young
entrepreneur. “I wanted my new
furniture to be like Lego Technic. I
bhomes.com
like playing with it and I
make trucks and ships
and jets. I do my
homework on my
desk and chair,
but I could take
them apart and
build something
new if I wanted.
It’s really fun.”
Now a
fledgling
company, OLLA
(combining the
names of the two
Otterstedt kids: Ole,
and his younger sister Ella,
aged five), will roll out production
worldwide in November, through
master franchises in much of Asia,
including the UAE, Russia and Korea,
such is the demand.
The concept involves Lego-Technicinspired planks in various sizes and
colours. Oversized screws and childfriendly connectors join the planks
together easily. What you make is
entirely up to you – that’s the beauty
of the design. And, when your kids get
bored or outgrow the furniture, you
can take it apart and build something
new. It’s also very safe to use. Safelock screws enable kids to assemble
while only parents can dissemble. And
it’s made from recyclable, non-toxic
materials, unlike many furniture
brands available on the market. It’s
safe to play with, touch and even lick –
as children are wont do.
Because of his job, as production
director at Umdasch, Jens found it
relatively easy to build a prototype.
“Everyone was very impressed when
I brought it home,” says the proud
dad. “We showed it to friends and they
came up with more ideas, for beds
and tables and outdoor furniture. So I
started thinking about the possibilities
– that the kids should be able to build
whatever they want, with lightweight
pieces they can assemble themselves.”
“It’s very important for children
to get involved with their bedroom
design,” says the kids’ mum, Yvonne.
“It’s an education: children are smart
from such a young age and they want
to make decisions and be involved.
OLLA furniture is also like a puzzle,
and they can change their room as they
grow up – which will save you money,
too,” she laughs.
Before the summer holidays are over,
your child could have drawn up a goldstar business idea – quick, hand them
some drawing pencils!

AN EVENING FULL OF FLAVOUR
Satisfy the whole family with these easy-to-make protein-rich dishes for Iftar
Words: Eleanor Joslin
“For Muslims, Iftar is one of the most
important rituals during Ramadan,”
says Rober Salloum, senior Arabic chef
at Fairmont The Palm. “Iftar often
evokes a community spirit, with family
and friends gathering together, inviting
each other round to their houses or
eating out at a restaurant.”
This is the first Ramadan I’ve
experienced in the UAE, having moved
from England to Dubai in October.
Chef Rober invited me to sample a
traditional Iftar meal at his restaurant
and learn more about Middle Eastern
cuisine and customs. Rich with faith,
family and culture, my first Iftar was
a wonderful learning curve – for my
understanding of the Islamic Holy
Month and for my taste buds, which
sampled many traditional dishes and
caught a glimpse of the heritage behind
the epicurean ritual.
Creating a veritable sightseeing tour
of Middle-Eastern cuisine, Chef Rober
guided me through each aromatic dish
on offer at the heavily laden buffet
tables. First there were the plump
dates, eaten to break the day’s fast.
Then a steaming bowl of thick lentil
soup, delicate on an empty stomach. I
tried a selection of crispy mezze dipped
into soft swirls of pumpkin humus
and creamed Persian spinach, and an
array of colourful salads. As well as
traditonal fattoush and tabouli, there
was chicken and pistachio, marinated
white beans, and roasted squash salads.
And this was just to start.
For the main event, slow-roasted
ouzi lamb fell off the bone and the thick
flesh of hammour fish crumbled in its
spiced marinade. Nutritious side dishes
included eggplant musakaa, stuffed
zucchini and cabbage dolma, some of
my favourites from the Arabic menu.
For dessert? Towering pyramids of
sweet pistachio baklava, honey-drizzled
pastry parcels and calorie-rich creamsoaked croissants.
One of the tastiest dishes had to
be prawn majboos – plump prawns
languishing in a sea of fragrant rice.
I asked chef Rober how to make this
at home. “The secret star ingredient is
dry lemon,” he reveals. “Also, use the
freshest river prawns in the market.
After a whole day of fasting, the body
needs some enriched proteins and
bhomes.com
prawns majboos is a traditional Emirati
dish that does just that.”
He also suggested the samak
chermoula, a baked white fish
marinated in tomatoes, spices, chilli
and lemon. “This Moroccan dish is
equally rich in proteins and is not
heavy on the stomach. I suggest using
shaari fish, as it’s local and sustainable.
This guarantees freshness and flavour,
especially if the marinade is homemade.
Both dishes are usually prepared in
hearty family-sized portions and are
easy to make at home.” Once you’ve
chopped and diced the vegetables and
herbs, these traditional dishes are
relatively quick and simple to cook.
Similar to a one-pot wonder, they’re
perfect for sharing with family and
friends. fairmont.com

Samak Chermoula
Serves 10
For the chermoula marinade:
100g chopped parsley
50g finely chopped garlic
100g red onion
100g tomatoes
100g chopped coriander
10g lemon zest
50ml olive oil
10g chilli paste (harissa sauce)
50ml lemon juice
10g cumin powder
20g salt
For the fish:
1.8kg local white fish (shaari or fiskar)
Side dishes:
100g carrots
100g potatoes
10g ginger
100g tomato
100g green pepper
75g lemon, sliced
50g chilli peppers
75g olives
Mix the chermoula marinade ingredients together, adding
more lemon juice or oil to thin the marinade, if necessary.
Wash and dry the fish. Keep a little more than half of the
chermoula aside, and rub the remaining sauce over the
outside of the fish and inside the cavity. Cover and marinate
in the fridge overnight or for several hours, then bring to
room temperature while proceeding with the recipe.
Preheat an oven to 160°C/325°F/Gas Mark 3. Lightly grease
a baking dish with olive oil. Cross the chopped carrots over
the bottom of the dish, add the potato slices in a single layer
and season them to taste, with salt, ginger and pepper. Place
the fish on top, and arrange sliced tomatoes on and around
it.
Thin the reserved chermoula with a quarter cup of water
and several tablespoons of olive oil, then spoon the mixture
over the fish and vegetables. Top the fish with green pepper,
lemon slices, chilli peppers and olives.
Bake the fish for 35 minutes, until the fish and vegetables
are tender. If the liquids in the dish need thickening, pour
them into a saucepan and boil on the hob, reducing the liquid
over a medium to medium-high heat.
To serve, pour the sauce over the fish and vegetables on your
guests’ plates and garnish with chopped parsley.

Area review
How Dubai got its very own Beverly Hills
Arguably home to the most discerning
buyers in the market, Emirates Hills
provides a high-quality lifestyle rich
with prestige and first-class facilities
but, more importantly, peace and quiet
within a family-orientated community.
Its nickname, the ‘Beverly Hills
of Dubai’ is certainly apt. This is a
development that attracts the highflying elite of Dubai – successful
businessman, CEOs, actors and
sportsmen have set up home here.
What are the attractions? First and
foremost, Emirates Hills is a golfer’s
paradise. If you want to practice your
swing on a championship golf course,
then go right ahead, you’re looking at
it. Luxurious villas hug the world-class
18-hole Montgomerie Championship
Golf Course – a course created by none
other than seven-time European Order
of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie,
with esteemed architect Desmond
Muirhead.
Secondly, the development really is
individual. Buyers were able to put that
coveted personal ‘stamp’ on their villa
design when they were given the unique
opportunity to custom-build their home.
The developer, Emaar Properties, has
been credited with pioneering the idea
of freehold property in Dubai, selling
land by the square foot so buyers could
build the house of their dreams. What’s
more, this is the only community where
Emaar has rolled out the scheme.
Of course, there are some stylistic
boundaries (money doesn’t always buy
taste...) but owners can be rest assured
on the levels of quality and style by
doing it themselves.
With such a unique selling point,
plots quickly sold out making it a highly
exclusive and desirable neighbourhood.
Twelve years later, it’s purely a
secondary market (where outlandish
designs would have suffered, if they’d
been allowed) and demand remains at
an all-time high. Today, the primary
draws of Emirates Hills are its
exclusivity and golf-driven lifestyle.
Of the 632 villas in the area, 250 are
golf-side and overlook the lush fairways
of the course, giving residents beautiful
vistas in a city renowned for its highrise steel towers. Understandably,
these select homes are the most
sought-after in the neighbourhood and
come at a premium of around 20% –
but that’s all in a day’s work for many
who seek a home here. Furthermore,
many homeowners spend millions on
fantastic upgrades, which boosts the
resale value as well as the individuality
of each home.
Typically, there are three types
of villa available on the golf course:
Al Hambra Villas, Montgomerie
Maisonettes and Signature Villas.
The common number of bedrooms
is four, although some offer as
many as 12, especially in the larger
maisonettes. The Al Hambra and
Signature Villa homes are smaller,
with plots measuring between 12,000
square feet and 15,000 (BUA is 6,000
to 9,000). However, even the smallest
plots come at a price; they start from
AED20million. A BUA of over 17,000
square feet can start from as much
as AED55million, especially with an
amazing upgrade and a wonderful view.
Sought-after views of the lakes and the
golf course really do influence the price.

Two
conflicting
trends have
emerged in the
market, reports Sam Wani
Dubai’s property market is going
through a unique phase of adjustment.
While property prices are growing,
they’ve also returned to last year’s
figures.
This year, Reidin shows that the
price index in May was 291.3, while in
January it was 258.2. As per the trend,
prices have grown by 12% in these five
months. For Q1, the land department
reports 13,279 individuals were
involved in property transactions, 81%
higher than the same period last year.
In value terms, the transactions totaled
AED61billion, which presents a growth
of 38% over the same period last year.
These figures indicate that the
market is growing very fast; when
aligned with the 20% annual price
growth over the last two years the
market should be heading towards a
bubble scenario.
However, anecdotal evidence
indicates that the ready property sector
is experiencing corrector adjustments.
According to many real-estate agencies,
prices in upper-end ready properties
have corrected by 10% to 12%, bringing
them back to the price levels of Q4
2013. The primary reasons for this
are the doubling of land department
fees and the implementation of the
mortgage cap by the central bank.
According to the central bank, in
contrast to the months preceding
the UAE’s 2008 property crisis, the
current market recovery has not seen
rapid credit growth, and growth has
come from cash investors rather than
end-users. Since mortgage-related
transactions have dropped, the only
reason for the price growth is the
abnormally high level of activity in
the off-plan sector – in other words,
speculation. The land department is
now looking to curb this activity by
imposing higher fees on the off-plan
sector.

Asal Abedi, residential consultant, Business Bay
Business Bay is one of the most dynamic
areas in Dubai. Situated close to
illustrious neighbours like Downtown
and Burj Khalifa, Business Bay is finally
reaping the rewards that were sown a few
years back.
Due to its prime location and scarce
availability of residential units, prices
have steadily risen in the last two years,
especially in 2013 when Business Bay
witnessed an influx of new buyers, both
end-users and investors.
Sales transactions are now at an alltime high and it could not be a better
time to invest in this area. Executive
bhomes.com
Towers is the most popular choice but
other buildings, both old and new, are
gaining attention due to their easy access
to Downtown.
Prices in the first quarter of 2014
increased steadily, with studios and
one-bedroom apartments selling and
renting extremely quickly. Rental rates
normally start from AED 70,000 for a
studio, going up to AED 170,000 for a
three-bedroom apartment. Sales prices
have seen a jump, too. Studio prices now
start from AED 1 million, and reach
AED 3.5 million for a three-bedroom
apartment.

Ask the agent
Sharon Sweet, senior residential consultant, JBR
Jumeirah Golf Estates is one of the finest
golf estates in the UAE. Golf enthusiasts
– and those aspiring – will definitely
enjoy the benefits of living there, with
its green landscapes and amazing golf
courses. There are four golf courses
named after the ‘elements of life’: Fire,
Earth, Wind and Water. Each course has
been designed by professional golfers:
Earth and Fire by Greg Norman; Wind
by Sergio Garcia, Pete Dye and Greg
Norman; and Water by Vijay Singh.
The community has a distinct
Mediterranean theme, and the separate
bhomes.com
developments have scenic names such as
Limetree Valley, Whispering Pines and
Sanctuary Falls, to name just a few.
Jumeirah Golf Estates is certainly a
location for the discerning homeowner,
one who enjoys an outdoor lifestyle,
amazing landscapes and great facilities
right on the doorstep.
Although prices have increased
over the last 18 months, they have
stabilised in the last three. However, as
the community nears completion both
demand and prices are expected to rise as
the area’s exclusivity tightens.

Enticed by Eid
Break the fast with tempting dinner table designs
In the advent of Eid, we’re busy
planning long weekend getaways,
family celebrations and delicious
daytime dinners. For those of you
staying in Dubai to celebrate the muchanticipated Feast of Breaking the Fast
at the end of the month, make the
dining table the centre of attention.
After 30 night-long Iftar banquets,
we like the understated look achieved
by Villeroy & Boch’s new Amarah
range, launching in the UAE this
month. For a truly spiritual experience,
the four natural elements of earth,
wind, water and air infuse with the soft
hues of taupe, salmon and sky blue to
create a simple yet sophisticated look.
The man behind the collection is
none other than three-time Michelinstarred Italian chef Gualtiero Marchesi
(famous for ‘returning’ his stars after
denouncing the Michelin scoring
system). He influenced the shape and
style of the various plates, deep bowls
and curved serving platters, painted
with organic swirls he says creates
an intimate dining experience where
the focus is wholly centred on the
food. Perfect for those post-Ramadan
festivities. villeroy-boch.com
