Once sacrosanct from cultivation and building, wetlands
(otherwise called vleis) both city and countrywide continue
rapidly to fall, one by one, in
plain sight, and at accelerating
rate. This flies in the face of our
country’s status as a signatory to
the worldwide Ramsar
Convention on Wetland
Conservation, and the
supposedly protected status of
these vitally important seasonally
waterlogged green belts. They
are being systematically covered
in houses, mansions, buildings,
The children know best - expounding on the issues at World Wetlands Day, Marlborough vlei
rubbish and mealie fields.
Do you care about this? You
should, because you need water
to live, and you live in this city!
The hundreds of school children
of all ages who attended the
recent World Wetlands Day
Commemorations held at
Marlborough vlei -like ALL our city
vleis, under imminent and serious
threat of development and
destruction - certainly do, as
evidenced by their poems, essays
and plays, passionately and
knowledgeably presented, about
this on-going, escalating crisis.
Continuing illegal cultivation,
rubbish dumping and actual
building developments, all spell
very bad news for our water
supply, and are nothing short of a
humanitarian disaster in the
making. Yet this message still falls
on deaf ears.
Lake Chivero, Harare's primary
water supply, as explained at
World Wetlands Day by leading
hydrology expert Professor Chris
Magadza, is so badly silted up as
a direct result of wetland abuse,
and so polluted because water is
no longer being naturally filtered
by the wetlands, that continuing
supply of clean water already
stands in grave, urgent jeopardy.
While school children seem fully
to comprehend the gravity and
urgency of this situation, grownups who should know better
continue unashamedly to destroy
these vitally important seasonally
waterlogged green spaces. It is
such a simple equation, even the
youngest school going child can
grasp it; no wetlands, no water.
Roads are now going in on this high profile and hydrologically vital suburban Harare vlei, which will very soon,
like too many others, disappear under building developments. The adjacent tarred roads are already seriously
flooding every times it rains, as a result. Some people claim that this large green area isn’t even a wetland - this
recent photo, however, speaks for itself!
2
No Wetlands - No Water!
Wetlands store our water, filter it of contaminants, and prevent flooding and
erosion. Given that we in Harare are right at the top of the water
catchment area, we cannot possibly do without them. If we are not part of
the solution, we are part of the problem, and standing helplessly by,
watching this disaster taking place
means we just don't care. We will care,
however, when water altogether stops
flowing from our taps, and the last
borehole and well have run dry - and
that day is so much closer than you think.
At a recent meeting of the Wetlands
Survival Forum, additional Trustees were
appointed, bringing office bearers to 8.
Hydrology expert Professor Chris Magadza is
Patron, Chairman is Allain Chimanikire, and
Trustees, Alex Masterson, Sweden Chishaka,
Kathy Manase, Desmond Matete, Precious
Shumba and Herbert Mashanyare. The
Wetlands Survival Forum was created in January
2013, facilitated by the Humanitarian
Information Facilitation Centre (HIFC), which
fully recognised at that time what many still do
not: The Wetlands Crisis is a Humanitarian
Crisis, because our water supply stands in
jeopardy as a result of wetland destruction.
Harare depends on the continued pristine
existence of its many city and suburban wetlands
dotted about, for its water supply. Without these
wetlands to capture, store and clean rain water
that then moves into rivers and thence to
Chivero, our water will soon run dry. It is
already happening, as evidenced by the drying
up of increasing numbers of boreholes, the
need to dig new boreholes deeper and deeper
and the serious flooding of our roads in heavy
rain, a direct result of wetland destruction which
areas otherwise soak up water and prevent
flooding. In turn, flooded city and suburban
roads develop the potholes that are the bane of
every driver's life! Downstream from us,
hundreds of thousands of people also depend
on these vital catchment sponges. The message
continues to fall on deaf ears and building
developments in wetlands continue in blatant
view. Property developers driven by financial
incentives continue to ignore the humanitarian
concerns - and,
paradoxically, the very
future survival of our
city - which depends
on the continued
supply of clean
water.......

Courageous Wheelchair Racers
do Zim proud again
Words Rosie Mitchell
Pictures Tinashe Chapepuka
Zimbabwe's Wheelchair Racers face tougher challenges than many. It is tough enough, of
course, on a daily basis, to live with a physical challenge – though, as these brave men and
women prove time and again, this does NOT mean that achieving greatness is beyond their
grasp! Their application, focus, determination and sheer hard work, certainly pays off in their
demonstrated success in races! But add to these challenges, the challenge of racing in
wheelchairs that are old, outdated and constantly in need of repair, and it can be clearly seen
that when they win and get placed, there is a whole lot of extra effort involved. Add, too,
spending two days and two nights on buses just to get to the start line – and you can see just
how much admiration our Wheelchair Racers inspire. Our Racers also face the tough challenge
of finding time in between long working hours to do the necessary training in daylight hours; all
very daunting, yet they still manage to win, and get placed, races!
Recently, a team of 9 of these hardy and determined Zimbabwean Wheel Chair Racers, travelled
to South Africa for the prestigious annual Outeniqua Wheel Chair Challenge in George. This is
the top wheelchair event in Africa, and it
also attract participants from places as far
away as Australia and New Zealand. The
Zimbabwean Team's resolve and effort was
soon to be demonstrated in the best
possible way. Using wheelchairs that put
them at a distinct disadvantage compared
with most other contestants who are
blessed with modern, super lightweight,
carbon fibre, puncture-proof models, they
STILL managed to return home with a
staggering 4 Golds, one Silver and with
three of the top Six Places, in the Main
Marathon Event, the T53-54! This was a
fine achievement indeed, made all the
more so when they raced from a distinct
disadvantage in terms of equipment –
though as most clearly demonstrated by
these amazing results, not so, in terms of
sheer grit, determination and talent!
Zimtrader attended their festive Send-Off
Ceremony, hosted by Nando's, one of their
several sponsors, and very well attended by
the media and by members of Government
too. The Wheelchair Racer and Hand Cyclists Association which
they formed last year, along with their volunteer Manager Chris
Katore, are doing a fine job of assuring that these brave athletes
receive the attention and accolades they fully deserve for their
efforts and in addition, more corporate sponsorship is these days
coming their way. Well deserved, it assuredly is!
This year's Outeniqua
Wheelchair Challenge
drew a field of 1080
participants.
Members of the
Zimbabwe
Wheelchair Racer and
Hand Cyclists
Association have
been travelling to
George for the past 9
years to compete in
this high profile event,
against many odds.
The 9 Zimbabwean
athletes who travelled
to Outeniqua this year
to compete, did
extremely well indeed.

Chris Katore pointed out, when announcing these achievements
– they were great, indeed, and with modern equipment, all members of our team can do even
better! The Send-Off Ceremony was a very festive affair, which included lunch, with the Deputy
Minister of Sport, Arts an Culture and other Government officials in attendance.
Edmund Makutya, a long time wheelchair racing champion who has won many high profile
events multiple times, including the Victoria Falls Marathon, the Outeniqua Marathon, the
Europcar 20 Miler and the Kariba Half
Marathon, and who works at Letombo Spar,
gave a speech, as did the current
Chairperson of the Association, Madeline
Madzivire, the Deputy Minister and retired
Colonel Nhemachena, Director General of
the Sports and Recreation Commission.
Sponsors were in good attendance too, and
some of their contributions such as suitcases,
kit bags and uniforms were presented at the
event. These courageous athletes, who defy
many odds to achieve great things, definitely
warrant our admiration and support. They
are a great inspiration.

Sunungukai Camp - seek out this secret paradise
Words and Pics, Rosie Mitchell
I recently spent an enjoyable day with the friendly Wilderness
Africa Trust team, visiting their community based wildlife
projects. These comprise Sunungukai Camp, now receiving
regular bookings, Good Gold Camp, currently being
developed, both in the Nyagande area, and their Garura
project, over the river from Hippo Pools. These excellent ecotourism initiatives are uplifting the local communities, creating
employment, and preserving pristine wilderness and wildlife
into the future. Most wildlife and outdoors enthusiasts are
already aware of the Umfurudzi Wilderness Area, the
National Park less than 3 hours' drive from Harare. Within it
is Hippo Pools, a private camp set up and run for over 3
decades by well-known environmentalist Iain Jarvis, under a
lease agreement. Umfurudzi itself is now being managed
through a joint venture between a private company and
National Parks and has been re-stocked with a wide range of
wildlife species. Camping and various activities are offered.
At Hippo Pools, the Wilderness Africa Trust set up by Iain
Jarvis offers accommodation in self catering lodges,
camping, and a number of guided and unguided
activities. There is a well marked network of colour
coded hiking trails through the beautifully scenic,
mountainous landscape. Together these encompass
routes comprising distances of over 200 km and are
very popular with hiking and mountain biking
enthusiasts. Hippo Pools has long been a popular
destination for weekends and holidays for Harare
dwellers, being so relatively close to the city yet
offering a vast, wild area of untamed beauty.
In addition to all of this, however, with support from
Ambuya Foundation, a UK based charity, Iain Jarvis
has pioneered some inspiring projects in communal
areas adjacent to Umfurudzi Wilderness Area over the
past few years. These offer further ways to enjoy this
wild and lovely landscape and the wildlife living in it.
Jarvis began the first of these over the river from
Hippo Pools in the Garura area, working with the
local people to create eco-tourism opportunities.
Meeting Ambuya Foundation Founder Sally Plummer,
who happened to be visiting one of her rural projects, he
shared his vision with her. Suitably inspired, she began to
assist Wilderness Africa Trust. Ambuya Foundation's level of
support has grown, as she has watched the focus and
dedication of the Wilderness Africa team, and is now helping
to make Jarvis' long term vision a reality.
Garura offers a beautiful A frame lodge with an amazing
view over the Mazowe river and mountains. Riverside areas
previously degraded are being re-afforested, and dams are
currently being built to help support and sustain the wildlife
that has been re-introduced;
giraffe, eland, wildebeest, kudu, zebra
and impala.

Sunungukai - secret paradise
Sunungukai Camp is in the Nyagande area and the drive there is a delight in
itself, through a wonderfully scenic part of our country, with characteristic
granite whale back mountains, kopjes and miombo woodland. Driving out
of Harare on the Enterprise Road, you turn off onto the Mutoko Road, drive
through Murewa, and then pick up the signposted turn off to Sunungukai 57
km past it. After Murewa, the scenery grows progressively wilder and wilder,
with thickly forested, rolling hills, leaving the whalebacks behind; pristine
wilderness, just waiting to be explored! Sunungukai Camp, well placed by
the river, offers lovely rondavel-style lodges, fully equipped with solar power,
gas stoves and fridges, crockery, cutlery and kitchenware, and bathroom
facilities with hot showers, so all you need is food and drinks. Like Gurura,
this area has recently been re-stocked with giraffe, eland, impala, zebra and
wildebeest. I am now itching to go and spend some days there, hiking
through these magnificent hills and enjoying the game.
Good Gold Camp was set up by a now closed mining operation, and
comprises a very well built cottage with a huge verandah overlooking the
river, and some other out-buildings. All
this has donated to Wilderness Africa Trust
by the mining company, and once
refurbished and converted, will also open
to the public. The structures already there
do not need much work to turn into
another lovely bush camp. Like
Sunungukai, the camp is well placed,
adjacent to the Mazowe River and the
Umfurudzi Wilderness Area, in a
scenically beautiful area.
Iain Jarvis and the Wilderness Africa Trust
team, with wonderful support from the
Ambuya Foundation, are doing a
magnificent job with these projects, uplifting local communities and helping conserve these beautiful wilderness areas into the
future. Sunungukai Camp accommodation, like Hippo Pools, is inexpensive, and can be booked through Wilderness Africa
Trust: www.wildernessafricatrust.org.

Mushroom Walks in Mukuvisi Woodlands
Story and photos by Rosie Mitchell
Cathy Sharp's recent Mushroom Walks in Mukuvisi
Woodlands drew many interested participants despite the
rain. All Walks, limited to 20, were sold out, and a few
extras accommodated. Much of interest was learnt. Most
importantly, the message about whether mushrooms are
edible or not; Cathy's strict advice - never risk eating wild
mushrooms; too many people have died this way! There are
so many unidentified and unnamed fungi, that it is far too
easy to mistake a toxic one for an edible one.
It is fascinating to study the proliferation of different fungi at
this time of year and once you start looking for them, you
find them everywhere. Cathy's enthusiasm is infectious and
her fountain of ecological knowledge apparently unending.
The children in our group especially enjoyed hunting them
down, with several unusual finds being collected by Cathy for
further research.
Cathy Sharp, though always very modest about this, is a
recognised world leading expert on fungi and has so far
authored 3 Field Guides to Zimbabwe's mushrooms; so far,
because since she is continually discovering new species!
She has already done her Masters Degree on fungi, and is
currently doing her PhD.
NEW!
She explained to our group that without the combination of
mushrooms and termites, we and the world about us would
simply be buried under mountains of plant debris! Some
termite species cultivate mushrooms underground to break
down the plant matter which they would otherwise not be
able to digest, in 'fungus gardens'. Fungi eat lignin and
cellulose, breaking them down into sugars, cleaning up our
world of debris in the process and playing a vital role in the
carbon cycle. Thus, just as we cannot do without trees, we
cannot do without fungi or termites.
You asked for it.....
NOW HERE IT IS!
Some specific tree species and plants enjoy symbiotic
relationships with particular fungi species, which assist their
roots in absorbing nutrients. The fungi in return enjoy sugars
supplied by the tree or plant's photosynthesis. If you plant an
indigenous tree in your garden and it fails to thrive, this is
probably because the fungi vital to its survival are not present
in your soil. Dig a small amount of soil from the base of the
same tree species in the bush, mix it with the soil at the base
of your tree at home. Thus, you will introduce the necessary
fungi - and chances are, it will now begin to thrive!
150g range of
It was astonishing how many different kinds of fungi we
found on our walk with Cathy, and how beautiful and
fascinating they are. She supplied magnifying glasses for the
walkers to use and a whole new crop of fungi enthusiasts are
now out there in the world!

Some help in tackling the weight loss challenge
by Mugove Muzanenhamo
Zimbabweans may finally be getting the
message - high-carbohydrate, high-sugar,
highly refined foods, just aren't healthy. A
recent study reported an increase in fast
food calories consumed in the past few years
with many fast food companies cashing in.
The bad news is, scales across the nation
are still tipping in the wrong direction.
Dietitians point to huge food portions, poor
food choices and a lack of exercise. But
anyone who has tried dieting and working
out knows that taking weight off isn't as easy
as putting it on. Weight gain occurs over
time, and along with the extra pounds come
other health challenges that make weight
loss difficult. Losing weight can be hard for
many people to do, especially if they are
trying to lose those 5 or 20 pounds that just
don't seem to want to go away no matter
what you've tried. There's often more to
losing weight than cutting calories and
hitting the gym. The fat on the body is there
for a reason - to protect your organs and
keep your body healthy and safe. Until your
body knows that the fat is no longer needed,
it's extremely difficult to lose weight. So
many people have tried and failed using
different diet programmes.
Overweight and obesity are defined as
abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that
presents a risk to health. A crude population
measure of obesity is the body mass index
(BMI), a person's weight (in kilogrammes)
divided by the square of his or her height (in
metres). A person with a BMI of 30 or more
is generally considered obese. A person with
a BMI equal to or more than 25 is
considered overweight. Overweight and
obesity are major risk factors for a number
of chronic diseases, including diabetes,
cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Excess
body fat may be carried not only under the
skin, but also inside the abdomen, heart,
liver and muscles. Obesity is a crucial public
health issue with significant medical,
psychological, economic and social
consequences. While diet and exercise work
well under most circumstances, you may
need to try something
different or additional to
drop those stubborn pounds.
While some diet supplements
promise to help you to get
rid of all the weight you need
to lose, often without dieting
or exercise, they are nothing
more than a way to get you
to spend your hard earned
money. However, there are
dietary supplements that
work well in helping you lose
weight when you follow their
programme. This one definitely belongs in
that category. Skinny Fibre is a dietary
supplement in pill, tablet or capsule form,
that helps you lose weight by preventing
food cravings, helping you feel fuller when
you eat and boosting your metabolism so
you burn calories more effectively. They are
made from all-natural products, so you don't
have to worry about putting chemicals into
your body. You can find various additional
sources in your diet mostly in the form of
fibre rich foods. The appetite suppressants
found in these main ingredients help keep
dieters in check with fewer cravings for the
foods you shouldn't eat when you're dieting,
preventing you from throwing your diet into
a tailspin. Many weight loss diets are in fact
based on the intake of high levels of fibre.
Glucomannan is a natural product extracted
from the Konjac Root found in subtropical
and tropical eastern Asia from Japan and
China south to Indonesia. Often used as a
laxative or to help lower blood pressure, it is
also used as an appetite suppressant. Once
the root is crushed up and consumed, it can
absorb 50 times its weight in water. Konjac
Root slows digestion and stabilises blood
sugars, reducing food cravings. There is
much research on its successful use to assist
obese patients. Caralluma is a flowering
plant in the dogbane family which comprises
around 120 species. Most grow in Africa
and are used for medicinal purposes,
though the caralluma species used in this
Old Mutual Roger Brackley Marathon the next big running event - 9 March
mugove
supplement is from East India, where it is
often used as an appetite suppressant. Many
users of this plant report having more energy
after taking it. Cha de Bugre comes from
the Brazilian tree of the same name which
produces the fruit-like berry used to make it,
and can also be used as a tea or coffee
replacement. The fruit suppresses appetite
while helping boost metabolism, improving
your ability to burn fat. Enzymes are
essential to every cell and every function of
your body, but modern, over-processed diets
are enzyme deficient, reducing the body's
ability to process foods efficiently, weakening
the immune system and allowing an
unhealthy build-up of toxins. Skinny Fibre's
natural formula helps the body get rid of
toxins, process food more efficiently, and
become healthy enough to make weight loss
possible; at which critical point, the powerful
weight loss ingredients work together to
maximise results.
Only the results will determine if a diet
supplement works for you. For many of us,
losing weight may be a case of life or death
because our health has been dramatically
impacted by our poor diet and lack of
exercise. Products by SkinnyBodyCare can
safely help both men and women who need
to lose weight and has additional benefits
too. Try Skinny Fibre combined with a lowcarbohydrate diet and exercise; as you begin
to lose weight, you’ll feel healthier and
happier, and so, motivated to keep going!
Runners going all out during the
Peter Gradwell Marathon
Many running enthusiasts are hard at it, training for the Two Oceans Ultra
(56km) and Half Marathon (21.1km), plus the famous Comrades Ultra
Marathon (89km), which was founded in 1921 in honour of World War 1
soldiers and has been going ever since, bar a brief pause during World War 2.
The HAC Peter Gradwell Marathon named in memory of the founder of
Harare Athletics Club, took place on 9 February and included Half Marathon,
10km and 5km races as well. Despite the early morning rain, these events
drew a large crowd of runners. They included Chisipite Senior School girls
with their coach and teacher Gill Makura. For a fifth consecutive year, Gill is
taking a group of sixth formers down to Cape Town at Easter to run the Two
Oceans Half Marathon.
This, and the Old Mutual Roger Brackley Marathon on 9 March, which also
includes a Half Marathon,10 and 5 km race, are critical opportunities for Two
Oceans and Comrades Ultra Marathon entrants, who need a verifiable qualifying time. A sub five hour marathon is necessary.
Meeting the considerable challenge of a full marathon at this point in training is also a good test of whether one’s training is on
track, and a successfully run marathon boosts confidence for the ultra marathons ahead! Registration for the Old Mutual Roger
Brackley Marathon is at Old Georgians - also where the race starts at 6 am on 9 March - from 5 to 7pm on 7 March and 10am
to 4pm on 8 March, only. The field is limited to 400 runners. As this is always a very well subscribed event, best register early!

Power Cuts: An Alternative Solution
by Itai Hillary Zimwara
Power cuts have made a return to most parts of the country over the past few weeks.
The country's energy provider, ZESA, has singled out limited power generation
capacity as the root cause. The utility expects to close the demand gap after the
refurbishment and expansion of Hwange and Kariba power stations in 2018. It is
therefore imperative that we explore some viable interim solutions.
Power Consumption and Tariffs
Most Zimbabwean consumers are oblivious of the power consumption quotients of
their appliances. Power consumption can easily be calculated by multiplying two
parameters, the power rating of the appliance and its average usage time. Our
electricity tariffs are pegged against the energy consumption metric, kilowatt-hours
(kWh). ZESA has recently released a new kWh based dynamic tariff structure where
higher tariffs are applied to heavy power users. Domestic customers are now
charged $0.02 for the first 50kWh and $0.10 for 51-300kWh. The balance tariff
thereafter is pegged at $0.15 per kWh.
Key: 1 Unit=1kWh=100W appliance (eg TV) used for 10 hours.
Demand Side Management - in our own hands
Energy efficiency activities contribute to reduction of overall power consumption in a
domestic or industrial setting, such as use of low power CFL lights and adoption of
solar water heaters. The identification of heavy power consuming appliances is key.
In a domestic Zimbabwean environment the single largest power consumer is the
electric geyser, accounting for 35% and 50% of residential power consumption.
Demand side management tips include the switching on and off of geysers, and use
of geyser timers. Most domestic consumers however find switching geysers on and off on a daily
basis an arduous process - easily leading to very high bills beyond $100!

A basic electric geyser system consists of a 3 000W (3kW) element that heats water stored in an
insulated 150 litre water tank. Heating the water from an ambient temperature of 25 degrees to
65 degrees requires at least 2 hours 40 minutes. The element reheats the water twice a day,
adding up to a total of 5 hours of power consumption. A simple calculation will confirm that your
geyser will draw more than 15kW per day (450kW per month) classifying you under the heavy
user bracket. Accordingly every month you will spend over $50 towards heating water alone!
A National Issue
Today the ZETDC estimates that over 100 000 electric geysers are plugged into the national power
grid. Should they be switched on simultaneously, these geysers will consume more than 20% of the
electricity generated by the country! ZETDC’s projections indicate that approximately 63MW of
electricity on the grid is consumed by electric water heaters at any given time - enough to light up the
whole of Gweru and Kwekwe! Reducing the demand reduces the pressure on the national grid leading
to a more stable power supply and decreased transmission and distribution losses.

The Solution: Solar Water Heating
Solar water heating is a tried and tested renewable energy technology that makes practical and
economic sense as an alternative to water heating. A typical solar water heating system consists of a
200 litre water tank and solar collectors that harness the sun's energy. The insulated tank usually
positioned just above the collectors keeps the water hot, retaining 90% of the heat overnight. Solar
geysers perform even on the cloudiest of winter days where an electrical element acts as back up to
meet the hot water demand. A solar water heater will subsequently cut your electricity bill by almost
half, while providing you with reliable hot water during persistent power cuts. Solar is renewable,
clean and always available.

Given the dynamic tariff regime recently introduced by ZESA, it makes absolute sense today to invest in
a solar geyser. Every month your electric geyser will cost you beyond $50 amounting to at least $600
in water heating expenditure per annum. Supply and installation fees for the solar option from local
companies are in the range of $1 500, consequently reducing the payback period to less than three
years. Given system lifetimes beyond 15 years, the consumer will enjoy more than a decade of free
water heating. Installing a solar water heater on your rooftop protects you from high energy tariffs
and addresses pertinent environmental and national energy issues.

Chisi and Hellenic students attend Model United Nations in The Hague
by Jacqueline Collins
I am not much of a night bird and I hardly ever venture forth in the
evenings because I hate driving in the dark with all the potholes.
However, I was really glad that I made the effort to go to see the Tonga
band from Victoria Falls, Makoomba, at the Alliance Française this
year. They are definitely one of the most dynamic and vibrant bands
that I have ever seen in Zimbabwe. According to victoriafalls24.com
they give credit to their Tonga Elders for their wonderful skill at singing
and percussion which they learnt in the six months initiation ceremony
that they have to undergo at the age of ten to twelve. You probably
won't get to see them for a while as they are on a hectic tour of Europe
but when they come back do go to see them if you get the chance. It
was really thrilling to read on Finnbay.com that they ‘ignited the stage’
in Helsinky, Finland, and that the whole crowd started to chant,
‘Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe!’
My other highlight of 2014 so far, has been taking my Model United
Nations pupils to The Hague for the annual THIMUN conference. Both
Chispite and Hellenic pupils from Zimbabwe participated in this event
and they had a slight advantage over some of the other
students, as this year the theme was: “Africa,
transformations and the challenges ahead.” Certainly, the
Zimbabwean students helped to challenge many of the
stereotypes that students from Europe have of Africa.
However, at MUN, the students do not actually represent
their own country; they have to be delegates from another
country! This year, the Chisipite pupils were delegates from
Djibouti, which is a small mainly Muslim country on the
Horn of Africa. This is one of the strengths of MUN for
Zimbabwean students as they start to realise that
Zimbabwe is not the only country with problems, other
countries also have many difficulties that they need to
overcome.
It is always very moving to see the pride the students have
in their country when they first spot the Zimbabwean flag
waving with the rest of the flags on the long walk to the
World Forum when they arrive at the Conference. It was
also heartbreaking to see the beautiful statue of Nelson
Mandela with fresh flowers around his neck and a little
shrine at his feet, as people in the Netherlands also mourn
the passing away of one of the World's greatest leaders.

haired, designer-suited man, hardly looked like the
stereotype that most people have of a criminal, and we
watched him through a glass window as he sat stubbornly
trying to deny his crimes. Mind you, although the girls sat
rivetted, I must admit the novelty had worn a bit thin for
me, as he was there when I first attended the Conference
two years ago in 2012! I do not think I would make a very
good lawyer as I would be far too impatient.
Rather poignant to see the fresh flowers on this beautiful
statue of Nelson Mandela at the Hague.

Model United Nations
While we were at the conference we were treated to a
preview of a really inspiring film called ‘Sweet Dreams’ by
Lisa Fruchtman. This film looked at how women are trying
to rebuild their lives after the genocide in Rwanda. Although
that may sound like a rather grim theme, the film was very
uplifting and inspiring. It is about how a Rwandan Theatre
Director, Kiki Katese started a women's drumming group
open to women of both tribes, the Hutus and the Tutsis.
Previously only men were allowed to drum in Rwanda so this
was something totally new. It was brilliant to see how the
women gradually managed to overcome their feelings of
depression and hopelessness by being a member of this
group. The group then decide to open up an ice cream
parlour with the help of
an American
Entrepreneur and they
had to learn how to run
a small business. It was
incredible to think that many
people in Rwanda had never
tasted Ice Cream before,
something that we all take for
granted. Films of this type
can often be dull and didactic
but this joyful film kept us
absolutely entranced the
whole way through. This is
an absolutely must-see film
and I hope that it will come to
Zimbabwe very soon.

I love taking the students to The Hague, mainly because of the bicycles that are

certainly it could be a useful idea to
start on when the children leave home
and I am stuck with the Empty Nest
Syndrome.
Anyway, back to the home front, so to
speak, I am going to try to make more
of an effort this year with lunchboxes,
since I only have a few years left with
my teenagers before they fly off. This
recipe was mainly inspired by the fact
that my vegetarian daughter has
announced that in future she will eat
fish, so what a pleasure, that will open
up quite a few more culinary doors. I love to find recipes these days on
the Internet and this one was adapted from a super blog by Jane Anne
Hobbs, called ‘Scrumptious South Africa’. It is a perfect muffin recipe in
that basically all you have to do is measure out the ingredients and mix
them together, you do not have to think too hard which is perfect for
when you have a hundred and one other things on your mind. These
muffins would also be perfect for when you are asked to bring something
savoury to an event. Incidentally, they taste even better on the second
day, which is ideal if you need to cook them in advance because you
want to make use of the electricity while it is on, rather than waiting to
the day you have to make them, only to find the electricity has gone!
Also it makes use of ingredients that you could have to hand already in
your cupboard.

Other people see
what you are
reading and this can lead to making a new friend and a
lifetime of adventure; a select book on your desk when the
boss walks by can speak a thousand unspoken lines about
you, perhaps a useful technique for priming a discussion and
getting in front (or to the back!) of the pack to land the job
you want.

Book Club at Book Café 9 March 4pm: We discuss "Small Island" by Andrea Levy, a
delightfully entertaining, probing book about Jamaican immigration to Britain in the
days after World War II. Andrea Levy explores black and white issues of post-war
London, which include questions of class, race, and Empire. A novel about the irony of
intolerance, stereotype and prejudice in a country that fought a war against these very
issues. Won the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2004, the Whitbread Book of the Year in
2004 and the Commonwealth Writer's Prize in 2005. Books are better appreciated
when we're able to share our experience of the writing through discussion and
exploration of the text. At Book Club we read an agreed book in advance and meet at a
set time to talk about it. Come along even if you haven't read the book. Book Café, 139

It's nearly two months since Zayd Dada very tragically went missing on Mount Inyangani
while out on a short hike with his wife and friends. When they turned back, he carried

life. In outdoor shops, you can also cheaply buy a 'Survival Blanket' which weighs
marked trails through the Woodlands, which are looking
virtually nothing, easily fits in a pocket, and will keep you very warm. These are made of
really lush and beautiful. You can even bring the dog - as
long as it is on a lead. The small fees charged for this help special foil and keep the warmth your body generates, inside. Or, carry a couple of large

the process. Then, enjoy breakfast in the Coffee Shop and
take a look at some game from the Viewing Platform. Young Dehydration is a major risk. This, along with heat stroke, could cost you your life.
Always wear a hat. Never assume you'll find water. There are water bottles available

might be lucky enough to see this happy family of four!
Ideally, have one of these plus a bare minimum of 2 litres of water per person, for a half
day hike - preferably more. Some food is obvious too, even if the intended hike is short.
Biltong, nuts, dried fruit, cereal bars, are ideal.
For basic first aid, a small bottle of lavender oil is perfect. This deals with a multitude of
mishaps; it is antiseptic, soothing, and great for treating cuts, grazes, burns, insect bites
and nettle stings; plus, carry a crêpe bandage, some plasters, a needle for splinter
removal, antihistamine tablets, oral rehydration tablets, and pain killers.
For effective navigation, from the Surveyor General's Office, buy the 1:50 000 maps for
the relevant area. Buy a GPS, learn to use it, and carry spare batteries, or a compass, and
learn to use that. Carry your fully charged mobile - though you certainly can't always
rely on signal - a head torch and spare batteries and always, a whistle. If you fall down a
crevice, you can then attract the attention of searchers. If you get lost at nightfall, don't
wander about. Stay put, stay warm, and in the morning, you'll more easily and safely find
your way out of there.
