HE Institute of Administration Commerce
(IAC) discussed the Zimbabwean economic
situation by unmasking the economic
enablers that will unlock Zimbabwe’s
economic potential when they met for their annual
conference at the Carribea Bay Resort in Kariba
from October 1 to 3 a fortnight ago.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe deputy governor Charity
Dhliwayo, who delivered the keynote address at the IAC
conference, said the finance sector is the heartbeat of the
economy, as a result the central bank is doing all it can to
maintain a sound financial sector.
While answering a question from a participant,
Dhliwayo said, only three banks were facing liquidity
challenges, the rest of the 16 were meeting their depositors’ obligations.
Thanks to RBZ’s strict surveillance and continuous
engagement with all players in the financial sector.
Dhliwayo explained, in Zimbabwe, the financial
system has been significantly tested in recent years by
the effects of the hyperinflationary environment, volatile
global commodity prices and the resulting slowdown in
domestic economic activity since the adoption of multicurrency system in 2009.
Nonetheless, the Zimbabwean financial system has
remained relatively resilient over this period.
The deputy governor gave reasons why the soundness
and stability of the financial system is important:
 it creates a trusting and enabling environment favourable to savers and investors.
 it helps the transmission of monetary policy, thereby,
assisting the attainment of the price stability objective.
 it encourages efficient financial intermediation which
eventually promotes investment and growth.
 it encourages effective and efficient operation of
markets and improves distribution of resources in the
economy.
While addressing IAC delegates, SAZ executive
director Eve Gadzikwa said upholding high ethics and
good corporate governance is good for business and
Zimbabwe.
She also emphasised that all Zimbabweans should
desist from paying bribes because this kills businesses
and sends negative signals to investors thus retarding
growth.
Eve advocated the importance of a Zimbabwe Legislation protecting whistle blowers to tame corruption.
Petronella Kagonye, deputy minister of Transport
and Infrastructural Development, set the tone with a
presentation on the role of infrastructure in growing the
Zimbabwean economy.
She said her ministry was working hard to make
roads, railways, airports, and other infrastructure become
usable to enable safe movement of goods and passengers.
The objective of the conference was to improve
skills, knowledge and expertise of delegates, for excellent service delivery at their workplaces guided by a
code of professional practice.
