Theme: Promoting Excellent Quality Coffee and Creating Opportunities for Farming Communities
In July this year, a provincial cupping event was held in Aiyura, Eastern Highlands Province at the CIC’s Research and
Growers Services Division to identify good quality coffee from cooperative groups in major coffee growing provinces.
The event was held from the 25th July to 7th August 2014.
A total of 93 coffee groups’ samples were used in the event. Thirty three samples each were from Eastern Highlands
and Morobe, eleven from Jiwaka, ten from Simbu, three from Western Highlands, two from Enga and one from Madang. The assessments involved parchment, green bean, roast and cup quality of coffee. From this exercise, provinces
who have made it to the national event include Morobe, Eastern Highlands, Jiwaka, Simbu, Western Highlands and
Madang. The National Coffee Farmers Inaugural Cupping Competition will take place from the 22nd- 26th September
2014 in Port Moresby.
HOW CUPPING DETERMINES FINAL QUALITY OF COFFEE
Coffee cupping or tasting is the practise of assessing the taste and aromas of brewed coffee. Cuppers deeply sniff the
coffee then slurp the coffee so it spreads to the back of the tongue to give different tastes of the coffee. The national
cupping event in September will bring in International coffee cuppers to further assess all finalists’ samples together
with local cuppers in the country.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The cupping competition is expected to create an avenue for farmers to liaise and network with exporters, roasters,
coffee retailers and buyers. There will be displays and exhibits by local exporters, roasters, cooperative groups, retailers and manufacturers in the industry. The Coffee Industry Corporation will showcase all aspects of coffee production and processing from the tree to the cup. The public and international visitors will get to experience and taste real
organic PNG coffee. The Coffee Industry Corporation is calling for interested stakeholders in the coffee industry to
display products and information at the competition. If you are interested to display at a booth during this competition,
please contact Jacqueline Ruguna at the Coffee Industry Corporation on 532 1266 or email [email protected] pg. There
are limited spaces available so contact us at your earliest convenience.
