Text (250 words):
Back Ground: Management of complex wounds is a big challenge and delay in healing leads to
larger morbidity. An effective simple solution still remains a challenge under such conditions.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of autologous PRP in complex wound management.
Methods: Prospective interventional study conducted at territory teaching hospital between
Jan.2013 to June 2014.
Inclusion criteria: Patients with complex wounds - non progressive healing and associated with
infections such as post traumatic with exposed bone/tendons ,Pressure sores, Diabetic sores ,
trophical ulcers etc
Intervention: Sequential Local Infiltration of 4-6ml of PRP (5-7 times of blood platelet values).
The observations were recorded on graph papers and sequential photographs were also
evaluated.
Results: The results enhanced wound healing including infection control. There were no major
complications. None of them required the full thickness skin grafts/ flaps, preventing lots of
resource burden and morbidity to the Patients
Discussion: The PRP has immense biological potentials towards healing through different growth
factors, and lysozymes. It has been used for tendon, bone & cartilage healing .But its use in open
infected wound management is not yet established.. Prior to using in clinical settings we
conducted a rabbit model experiment to understand the PRP role in healing.
Conclusion: The Platelet Rich Plasma usage in the management of resistant wounds is very
encouraging and is an effective solution to a complicated problem
Type of Presentation: Oral Presentation
