California State University San Marcos Student Named Finalist
for Presidential Management Fellowship Program
SAN MARCOS, Calif. (April 18, 2014) – CSUSM graduate student Arvin Tahami has been
selected as a finalist for the prestigious Presidential Management Fellowship Program (PMF).
The program began in 1977 and matches outstanding graduate students with Federal grant
opportunities. The PMF Program provides students with an opportunity to work in a leadership
role and perform valuable service while jump-starting a career.
This year 609 finalists were chosen from approximately 7,000 applications. The CSUSM student
named as a finalist is a recent graduate of the Professional Science Master’s in Biotechnology.
“We are thrilled with the recognition one of our many standout students has received,” said Mike
Schroder, Dean of Extended Learning. “Our curriculum is designed for all students to receive an
education that is tailored to maximize academic interests. Arvin is one student who has made the
most of every educational opportunity he has had.”
Arvin Tahami completed his undergraduate studies in biochemistry at CSUSM in 2007 and
graduated from the Professional Science Master’s program, (PSM) in May 2012. He currently
works as a molecular biologist for a global biotechnology company in San Diego.
“I decided to attend CSUSM’s PSM program because during my time as an undergraduate I
learned that CSUSM takes its responsibility towards scientific education very seriously. The
professors here pride themselves on their commitment to effective teaching,” said Tahami.
The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is administered by the U.S. Office of
Personnel Management (OPM). Each year, candidates apply for the prestigious title of PMF
Finalists. Selected Finalists are eligible for appointment as Fellows.
The Professional Science Master’s in Biotechnology at CSUSM is a blend of MBA and
Biotechnology training. It is a two-year program that combines advanced coursework and
laboratory training in biotechnology with core business courses, such as accounting,
management and marketing. Students learn business and intellectual property law, regulatory
issues in biotechnology and scientific communication methods, and complete internship and
residency applications designed to facilitate thesis research.
